It was not the intent of my comment to assign blame for this injury. It just seems like common sense that the player who is already standing there should be the one to make the play.

pitchers are never encouraged to make those plays

or you could blame Astudillo, or you could blame Rocco for playing him or you could just realize that it’s sports and players get hurt

It is sports, and yes, people do get hurt. Could this have been avoided? Maybe. Duffy had backed off the play, Astudillo seemed to have it, and Arraez comes running over. Someone didn’t call it, or hear it being called, or something. We aren’t pointing a finger here to say, ‘Bad!’, just looking at it ... it probably could have been avoided. And I feel really bad for Arraez, and the team. We are likely out a little spark plug. :(

I had a hunch Cruz would help things out. but could we not play tomorrow???

Maybe the injury won't be as bad as it looked..... very wishful thinking I know.

Pretty sure both players called it and didn’t hear each other. Kaat used to point to the player who should catch it and grab the other one to keep him out of the way

Best not to blame anyone. They all play hard...its hard-wired into all of them. Just a very unfortunate injury...the kind that you just pray doesn't happen just before a huge series against a team I just can't stand.

Big bummer...but, the rest of the guys may look at it as having something/someone to win for. Maybe that will be a good thing.

Or just one more excuse for the inevitable sweep against NY.

Speculation is just that, but to me Arraez injury looked like an ankle sprain-type mechanism rather than Achilles (as postulated by another poster). The fact that he seemed to be unable to bear any weight on it is concerning, but may or may not ultimately be predictive of the severity of the problem. I suspect he will get X-rays soon (if he hasn't already) and we may hear something yet today regarding fracture vs. no fracture. Obviously no fracture would be better, but even a bad ankle sprain can sometimes take a few weeks to heal to the degree necessary to allow playing at this level. It's possible an MRI may be utilized as well, but they aren't always used if the diagnosis is an ankle sprain. Whatever the case, let's hope for the best for such an impressive young player who has been so important to the Twins the latter part of the season.

It's funny seeing comments online saying that this is just a "typical Minnesota sports" thing to happen. It's that kind of "woe is me!" attitude that makes watching sports not fun. If you're expecting bad things to happen and have excuses for when bad things happen it makes sports less enjoyable to play and watch.

Thanks. I was just looking where he was grabbing his leg and he seemed to be grabbing behind the knee/calf ... that worried me.

I'll be happy if I'm proved wrong. But for now, I stand by my pessimism.

I suppose now we have to hold our breath on every pop up near the mound like it's Game 1 in Oakland.

They all called it loud and clear on that last pop up.

Pessimism and skepticism are not uncalled for. But predicting certain death is. :)
