Addison Reed in Rochester:

4.0 IP, 11 hits, 6 ER, 3 HR, 13.50 ERA

*reaches for vomit bag*

Just go get Kimbrel already. I'm totally off the fence on that acquisition.

Is he throwing left-handed?

In happier news, Miguel Sano is only striking out in... 50%... of his plate appearances...

Damn, I'm really bad at this.

He's a veteran, he doesn't have to prove anything because he hits the ball really far sometimes. He'll be right back to his 38.5% strikeout rate from last year.

Wait, I think I'm even worse at this.

Most concerning about Sano is there is still no good explanation for why he was so terrible last year. "Not physically fit" sounds more like an excuse. Emotional offseason before the year? Puhleaze.

In any case, there was no reason to keep him in the minors any longer. He was hitting in the minors like he always had, which is to say very well. His stay in the minors was on the cusp of looking punitive.

I suspect Sano will start hot and then taper off as his bad habits kick in again unless Cruz (or better yet Baldelli) can keep him focused.

Seems like the Vikings have had a lot of Sano-like players in the past twenty years.

They aren't going to give up a draft pick now that they only have to wait 19 more days.

I wouldn't call it punitive unless he ran out of rehab time and got optioned. He missed spring training plus a quarter of the season, and his strikeout/walk rate was pretty abysmal at AA/AAA which suggests he's not seeing the ball well yet. It's perfectly reasonable to give him the full rehab time to shake the rust off and make sure he's set up for quicker success when he gets here.

Sano has played 10 games in the minors. In 44 plate appearances, he has struck out 14 times (32%).

If you are referring to AAA numbers only, that's a pretty dang small sample size of 3 games ... a sample size that has his BA at .308 and OPS at .819, mind you.

I agree it's a very SSS and if Sano didn't have a history of this exact problem, I would ignore it completely.

But it's a little unsettling to see a player of his capability and age striking out that often against MiLB pitchers.

It could be nothing more than statistical noise in a SSS but I don't like seeing it.

I might be mad if on June 6th Kimbrel is not a Twin, having signed an one year contract some place else...

Apparently ;)

14 K in 41 PA is 34% not 50

Personally I don't put much weight on his numbers in A-ball. I expect dominance from any major leaguer against kids living on fastballs and sketchy secondary pitches.

Yeah, he should post video game numbers at any level lower than AA.

I actually was never on the fence, I always wanted him.

I am on the fence now though, by this point I have next to no faith that he wouldn't be completely rusty and lost most of the year. I'd be happy with a three year deal though so the team has him when he's back to form next year.

The good news is that Reed has been so bad that there's probably no way the team can rationalize putting him on the 25-man. If he was throwing 87 MPH but still somehow junkballing AAA hitters on his way to a 4.75 ERA, they'd probably still find a way to justify a call up.

Compared to the 2018 team, the 2019 Twins also look like a roster that can better absorb a high strikeout bat. Not only are many of the biggest offenders last year either gone or marginalized, but nearly to a man, everyone on the team is striking out less this year. Maybe some of that will rub off on Sano as well.

Oddly, Nelson Cruz seems to be the only batter that is striking out more this year.

In and of themselves, I’m not too worried about the strikeouts. It’s the decreased production that comes with a 35% strikeout rate that worries me. Players have a pretty defined ceiling that isn’t super high if they’re striking out over 33% of the time.

This needs to be addressed... Right now.

It's kind of hard to be upset about 7 of the 8 BP spots at the moment. Rogers, May, Parker, Harper, Magill, Duffey and Morin have done nothing to really complain about. Way better than anyone could have expected. I'm OK with upgrades, but it's not like any of these guys are hurting the team in any way.

Hildenberger on the other hand, wow. Why do they keep riding this train?

For those of you saying we should wait until we don't give up a draft pick for Kimbrel-I look at it the opposite way.

We need to bite the bullet and give up our draft pick. It is what would separate us from the rest of the field right now (at least, supposedly). We wait, he signs with someone else. This might be a good way to sell to Kimbrel how bad we want him on our squad...he might say "wow, they are the only team that is willing to give up a draft pick for me. And they have the best record in baseball (something he obviously could not say at the beginning of the year).

2 years 25 mil. lose the pick. Go get the elite closer.

(10 this year, 15 for next)

there is one good MLB reliever on your list, and a couple back end maybes.

I find a great deal to complain about.

Parker’s numbers the last two years are pretty much exactly the same as Taylor Rogers’.

So, according to you, which of them isn’t a good MLB reliever?

I’ve seen the complaining, but while those maybies are proving everyone wrong, maybe we shouldn’t.

I wanted them to sign no less than three big name free agent relievers this year and every one of them have been brutal. I don’t see how the preferred alternative would have made anyone happy.

Never know how they would have done under the tutelage of Wes the Wizard Johnson.
