Nick Anderson- just what our bullpen needed

Just noticed his stat line going through RP's in my fantasy leagues available players and was surprised when i saw his stats for the year so far.

 

11 innings, 22 k's and a 2.45 ERA.

 

I do understand it's early in the year but it would have been nice to have a guy that can get some K's.

45 batters faced, 22 strikeouts so far.

 

Nine multi-strikeout relief outings already, in just 11 appearances (the first of which was only 1 batter long).

Is it time to start wondering about these pitching misses? Then again, I though Erv might still have something in the tank, so, nope!

You know who else in the Miami bullpen right now? Yep, it's everyone's favorite, Tyler Kinley!

 

He's got a 3.21 ERA with 10.9 K/9. He does have a 1.50 WHIP, though. I didn't expect him to be in the majors after his disaster with the Twins last year, but we know how it works, once you leave the Twins organization, things usually well for players.

I have another former-Twins reliever update, this time it's Angels RP Luke Bard, a former 1st round pick of ours. Here's how he's doing:

 

16.1 IP, 2.20 ERA (4.28 FIP), 1.04 WHIP, 2.8 BB/9, 10.5 K/9

 

He may be a 28 year-old rookie and took his time getting to the majors, but perhaps the Twins should show some patience with their young relievers?

I agree on Nick Anderson. He's been the talk of #TwinsTwitter all season. Not sure who else they have missed out on though.

 

Luke Bard picked up his first MLB win today. Happy for a great guy. I hope he does well.

 

But aside from Anderson through six weeks, not sure who they missed on.

And even then, you only can protect so many guys. Nick Burdi goes elsewhere, Dereck Rodriguez is allowed to sign as a minor league free agent elsewhere, and the 40 is still packed full of pitchers. Who do you expose? Perhaps it'd be Jake Reed or Gabriel Moya or Andrew Vasquez instead blowing up if they had protected Nick or Luke, and most likely the bullpen would still be full, and those two would be struggling to get out of AAA...

Rodriguez was just optioned. Mainly I was thinking of Pressly. To a lesser extent I would call Romero a miss so far, but hopefully he will be of value when some of these other guys on the staff start to regress.

Yeah, but Rodriguez being optioned has as much to do with his team as him. He's struggled, but not anything crazy, but the Giants just essentially turned over 3/5 of their rotation, attempting to get something to stick before they are forced to make decisions on guys like Bumgarner and Will Smith by the trade deadline.

 

Pressly was already making those strides with the Twins, and frankly, that's why he drew the trade package he did with the track record he had at the time.

It has everything to do with him. He's got a 5.80 FIP and a 5.05 ERA.... in the National League.

 

He's been worth nearly a full negative bWAR already.

Didn't take you long to hit BINGO. They're the same profile. Redundant. All the more so in the fact that the FO themselves don't seem to like Reed that much, based on the arms they've brought up before him. And Reed turns 27 this year...so he's not young.

 

They kept the 5th-rounder from Oregon and let the 32nd round guy from Mayville State go. Something someone would do...if they hadn't seen either pitch.

I hope you're not suggesting that this is a label you've seen applied in all but the most infrequent of times and by inexpert people. Because it would be just as misguided as labelling the Twins as poor evaluators of pitching talent, a much more common refrain. After all, you can't let a talented player get away unless you first acquired them, right?

Sure, but they didn't acquire those players, but they did let them go.

 

They also drafted two rule 5 guys, neither of whom they kept.

 

It was, admittedly, a short answer to a complex question. They are having a good season this year at the MLB level, but it's not like the AAA team, that was supposed to be full of depth, has been all that helpful yet.

 

I remain hopeful, if cautious.

Nick Anderson update: he's followed an impressive April with an equally unimpressive May.

 

April: 13 G, 13 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 2 BB (both intentional?), 27 K, 2.08 ERA

May: 9 G, 8.2 IP, 11 H, 10 R, 10 BB (1 intentional), 13 K, 10.38 ERA

 

Anderson's K% was a Hader-esque 52.9% in April, but a relatively pedestrian 28.3% in May.

 

Fellow Marlin and ex-Twin Tyler Kinley has hit a similar rough patch (7.88 ERA and 2.6 WHIP for May) and was just optioned back to the minors yesterday.
