JP Crawford has less than 250 PAs, a bit harsh to call him a failed prospect.   Would you give up Buxton + to get Segura?

Three years of Buxton vs three years of Segura? Not sure which side I'd rather have right now. Do I have the years of control correct?

three years of Buxton for three years of Segura and a good RP? Polanco to 2B, Kepler or Cave to CF. I don't know, but that team sounds like it might be better than whatever bad 2B they pick up, and 1 year "prove it" RP they sign (I'm guessing ,based on 2 years of data, here, I could be wrong on what they'll do).

I may have missed the arbitration buyout., but the way the Mariners have been flipping these vets, were they to move Santana and his remaining contract, a Cron or Austin type seem to be going back to Seattle in return.

But Cron was better than Santana last year anyway and he's 4 years younger. If folks are upset about the $5M going to Cron, I don't understand why $20M to Santana is a good deal. I've always liked the guy and wanted him as a free agent last year, but he is 32, odds are he's not going to get better with age.

This is a good post and also the case against Cron. We should just stop the "They haven't committed yet" argument. They have. That ship has sailed.

Good deal for Philly.

Buxton has 4 years of team control.

They didn't offer Cron arbitration. They agreed to a $4.8 million deal to avoid arbitration. Now it's guaranteed and on the payroll.

It doesn't matter if they avoid arbitration or not -- I think all one-year contracts for arbitration-eligible players have the same provisions for termination pay. One of the more notable recent cases of a player being cut with termination pay was Emilio Bonifacio, and that was after he and the Royals agreed to a deal to avoid arbitration:

Not that I expect the Twins to cut Cron. In fact, it is probably safe to assume that any arb deal for that much money is effectively guaranteed, because cuts with termination pay are so rare at that level.

Yeah, things have got to be a little uncomfortable for Machado at the moment. At the very least, teams will imply that his attitude issues are going to make them consider going in another direction, though teams would be stupid not to try to leverage that.

I'd guess the Phillies are out, but I suppose it's possible this is their way of telling Manny that it's 3B or the highway.

I'm confident Machado and Harper will get paid......rumor has it Corbin will sign a deal almost exactly like Darvish got, with some smart team....like Darvish signed with a smart team....so maybe long term SP deals aren't stupid.

When smart people do stupid things, that thing they did is still stupid.

Or maybe they are right. And not relying on the sixth or seventh best pitcher in your farm system is worth the risk of signing good players.

Well, you're creating a bit of false dilemma.  And it's hard to argue that the Cubs were right with Darvish given that they've gotten zero value from him and no guarantee that he'll return to form.

Injuries happen. If you won't sign any player because injuries might happen, sell your team. The twins offered the second most for him....

I like Corbin, but that 40% slider usage would worry me quite a bit, it seems reckless. It's clearly his best pitch and the biggest reason for his success, but will he and the team want to dial the usage back now that he got a huge payday? Or will they roll the dice that they can avoid more arm trouble and go full steam ahead?

That's quite the rotation... Scherzer, Corbin, Strasburg.

Yup...and I could see them going after Keuchel as well.

6/129 isn't too bad.  But I wouldn't pay Corbin that kind of money.

You are going to have to pay close to that type of money to get a front line starter.  Or give up one headliner prospect (Lewis or Kirloff) plus other good prospects to pry an ace loose.  We all have doubts the Twins will ever go in that direction.

I'd like a front line starter, and I'd certainly be in favor of finding one in free agency; I wanted Darvish last off season. But I don't want Corbin for 6 years, I don't think he'll make it anywhere close to that long. And more importantly, since he wanted to go to an east coast team, the Twins were probably out of the running for him no matter what.

This is my thought also.  I'm good with frontline money, I just don't think Corbin is anywhere close to frontline.

He was the best pitcher this year. Lots of years, this type will be the best. It's why you can't wait all the time, because there often won't be the exact one you want in the future.

Theo is not looking real smart right now. I found myself on the Cubbie board recently and they are hoping he retires and goes back to Japan to pitch.

I suppose if you want to give up on a player after one injury, sure. I assume you feel the same about Buxton or Reed or Pineda?
