Aug. Deadline

The Twins already traded 1/4 of its 25 man roster but August ain't over. Players traded before Sept. 1 can still play in the post season.

So if you're the Twins GM, who do you still consider as trade bait and under what conditions do you make the trade?

For instance: Logan Forsythe-

1. Trade him for anything you can get?

2. Trade for prospects only?

3. Seek 1 year extension as Gordon/Lewis insurance and trade only if can't extend.

Those that like trade talk let's really go at this hard because we're about to hit a two month black hole that trades won't happen!

I would trade him if we can get anything.  As Parker has pointed out, he has turned into the slappiest of slap hitters.  He also has an unsustainable babip, and if we have to have a stop gap waiting for prospects (Gordon has not helped himself out), then we can try and pick up someone better in the off season

I'd go Option 1 with Forsythe, take anything you can get. Second base shouldn't be a tough spot to fill.

My ideal scenario would be an Escobar reunion, but Jed Lowrie and Daniel Descalso are also going to be free agents. I know those aren't "sexy" names that jump off the page, but both those guys are having outstanding seasons. While I don't suspect the Twins will be particularly interested in a Dozier reunion, his presence on the market, as well as Daniel Murphy and a few others, should help a team like the Twins come away with a good piece at a price they're willing to pay.

Of course there's always trades, or you know the Twins could just go out and sign Machado and shift Polanco over to second base. Hey, a guy can dream ...

I think the Twins traded away everyone that generated interest already. If another team wants to give the Twins a warm body for Forsythe I'm not going to be mad about it.

Forsythe and Grossman...maybe Odorizzi is about all we could hope to trade. But i think none get moved and we just wait till the offseason.

Find me an August trade that's brought value back to the trading team. These are usually completely one-sided money-savings moves.

So if someone asks for Grossman I'd take anything including just letting him get claimed but what about odorizzi? I would want a return or roll the dice in spring training...

I seem to recall the Twins trading Dave Hollins in August, and getting back a kid named David Ortiz.

Whatever we could get for Forsysthe, I'd take & I'd listen to offers for Grossman.   I would have keep Odorizzi, good starting pitching doesn't exactly grow on trees.

Actually, that kid was named David Arias. :)

Bagwell and Smoltz came over in August trades too. But a lot has changed since then.

I don’t think August trading is different or more difficult today than it was years ago.

If the Twins has a Verlander to trade, they would get back some good prospects. If Santana had returned and was pitching like the first half of 2017 they would get some good prospects.

The Twins have already traded their most valuable trade pieces.

All prospect trading is different today than it was years ago, not just in August. As MLB salaries rise, veterans have less relative value and cheap prospects have more. (Plus teams have an additional year before prospects can be eligible for Rule 5 now.)

Even in the special case of Verlander, 20+ years ago he would have brought back more, and may have needed to be traded by the July 31st non-waiver deadline.

About the only non-Verlander way to get a decent prospect in August now would be a fluke of timing -- a player who has both a non-negligible salary and serious health concerns and is thus able to clear waivers on August 1st, but then answers those health concerns quickly thereafter. Ervin was close, except for the "answering those health concerns" part. :)

If they could trade Forsythe, maybe they could call up Zander Wiel? He just capped off a great season at AA and they'll need to add him to the 40 man roster over the offseason, so maybe they could try him out in September.
