Also, at this point....they probably have close to an agreement in place......so I doubt he goes back to school.

True, True, True and True.  Was just wondering with my fingers on the keys.

Looking at their #5 round pick, reminds me a lot of the guy they took around here last year, Barnes.  Nothing real flashy, but solid.  Will see!

Cole Sands is the next pick. Pitcher out of Florida State. Pick 154 and MLB has him ranked at 116. Seems promising.

Sounds like he can stick as a starter. Reads more like a guy out of the Slowey/Baker/Duensing cloth.

Seems like if you can get that out of round five you're doing better than most.

KLAW just posted this.....in chat:

Cole Sands left his last start of the year with an injury, but the Twins just took him in the 5th round. That's a mild surprise to me - maybe the injury turned out to be nothing.

Sands' repertoire certainly sounds enticing. Safe to assume the last two picks had their stock hurt to some extent due to injuries. Maybe not a bad strategy to scoop those guys up and hope they blossom.

Worst case scenario is Sands has an injury that'll cause him to miss time, but I mean pretty much every pitcher gets a major injury at some point. But, I would also assume the Twins have done a lot of legwork in finding out just how serious Sands' injury really is.

Found this recap of that game:

Starting pitcher Cole Sands (7-4) allowed a two-run home run and faced just one more batter before exiting with what head coach Mike Martin described as right shoulder tightness in the postgame press conference.

He had been battling tendinitis in April as well.

I have no problem taking a chance on 'injured' players in the 5th round.  Especially pitchers...a huge percentage of them end up getting injured and recovering while they are in the minors regardless.

here's one I didn't expect to read, given how much KLAW likes Lewis:

Kyle
2:59 Would Royce Lewis have been your top position player in this draft?
Keith Law
3:00 No.

I wonder what the answer would have been if the question had been "would Royce Lewis have been your top HIGH SCHOOL position player in this draft?".  I would be surprised if KLAW had one of this year's HS players ahead of Lewis.  But either way, there's no shame in that...it's just interesting.  Lewis's downside seems to remain the possibility that he ends up a center fielder without much power.  But it doesn't seem to be necessarily trending in that direction yet.

Mack was the 25th pick overall in a mock draft the Bleacher Report (noted baseball experts :) ) put together one year ago.  Have no idea...maybe had a bad showcase summer season last year?  Signability?  Hopefully, the Twins have a good idea/information on the signability part of it.

We don't know for sure, but it looks like the Twins may have saved enough bonus money through the early rounds to add in the 5-7 range, which is exactly what they did last year. They also saved a good amount rounds 8-10.

I would have expected Seth Halvorsen (Heritage Christian Academy) to have gone by now.  Maybe the word's out that he isn't interested signing at/near the slot.  Missouri, I think.

KC has made ten picks, eight have been pitchers! Clearly going for numbers here....

And with a depleted system and money to spend, they took no chances on high-ceilinged high school kids. The KC faithful are puzzled.

There hasn't been a HS kid taken from MLB's top 100 since round 4. I'm guessing we can start crossing all of those off the wish list. We're probably not far from being able to cross off all the HS kids still in the top 200.

Well they took more college arms than I would have wanted, but any KC fans complaining after seeing what they did with their first two picks are probably just those folks who complain about anything.

It's hard, imo, to argue with a couple of those picks.....I am not sure about the college issue, frankly, lots of good college pitchers.

too late now. Round 11 and later, though I can't recall why that is.....

edit: maybe round 10, can't recall
