nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted March 16, 2018 Posted March 16, 2018 Don't see any link on MLBTR so not sure if they're breaking this. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/03/twins-acquire-jake-cave-designate-kennys-vargas.html The Twins are trading Luis Gil who's still in the Dominican League. Cave is another lefty outfielder, but I guess he can play all three positions. The Twins have DFA'd Vargas to make room. I'd guess/hope Cave has options in which case it's basically a swap of Cave for the out of options Vargas as far as the roster goes. His left handedness does not appear to be an immediate fit so this must be viewed as a transaction of opportunity rather than need. If he has options it probably is not going to impact Robbie Grossman for the time being. Edit: MLBTR has now added a Twitter link citing Berardino which I am not able to upload from my work computer.
Dman Verified Member Posted March 16, 2018 Posted March 16, 2018 Man the trade market must be depressed. Trading a decent AAA prospect for a lottery ticket. That's tough. So AAA outfield is Granite, Cave, and Wade? Not bad group of backups.
GP830 Verified Member Posted March 16, 2018 Posted March 16, 2018 So does Cave replace Vargas on the 40-man then? It’s an odd move to make. Makes me think something else is coming, because it doesn’t make sense on its own. Perhaps the twins are close to moving an outfielder?
HitInAPinch Verified Member Posted March 16, 2018 Posted March 16, 2018 I hope the Twins do the right thing and move Vargas to another team.

No kidding, with the defensive versatility of those three and Granite's and Wade's excellent on base skills, that is one high floor for the entire Rochester OF. Just so many lefties though. I'd have to think the Twins are fairly open to moving someone.
slash129 Verified Member Posted March 16, 2018 Posted March 16, 2018 Gil was a DOSL prospect and isn't in the prospect handbook. Looks like a lotto ticket. Hopefully, the Twins can get a lotto ticket type back for Vargas in a better-than-nothing trade. Rochester is going to have a good outfield with Wade, Granite and Cave.
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted March 16, 2018 Posted March 16, 2018 Or the link directly to MLBTR.
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted March 16, 2018 Posted March 16, 2018 This certainly is an off-season like we've never seen before.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2018 Posted March 16, 2018 Welcome aboard, Mr. Cave. Is he on the 40 man already?
Doomtints Verified Member Posted March 16, 2018 Posted March 16, 2018 Cave was DFAd by the Yankees early in the week. There were expected to be multiple suitors. Giving up Luis Gil seems like a bad move.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2018 Posted March 16, 2018 Not sure I understand. They have this player twice already in AAA. Not sure it matters, but I don't get it.

Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2018 Posted March 16, 2018 Three options? Hmmmm, makes a bit more sense.
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted March 16, 2018 Author Posted March 16, 2018 Not sure I understand. They have this player twice already in AAA. Not sure it matters, but I don't get it. Based on last year he looks to have quite a bit more pop in his bat than Granite or Wade. Not that it makes him better, just different. I'd sure like to find a right hander, but having three near-MLB ready defensively versatile outfielders certainly improves the odds that someone will turn out to be a useful MLB player.
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted March 16, 2018 Author Posted March 16, 2018 Three options? Hmmmm, makes a bit more sense. Where did you see that? That's definitely a plus.
jkcarew Verified Member Posted March 16, 2018 Posted March 16, 2018 We love us some left-handed hitting outfielders, do we not!? I like this move more if it comes with a spot cleared on the 40-man. He had been DFA's by the Yankees, so we don't have to add him if we don't want to, do we? Also, he should come with options without any appearances in the majors...one would think. Interesting. Shouldn't Vargas be exposed to waivers at this point, then?

Vargas has been DFA'd and Cave took his 40 man spot.
