Article: Game Thread: Twins v Mariners, 6/12@7:10pm CT

The Twins are 12-18 at home and 20-9 on the road. I’m fully aware of this yet still excited for some baseball played at Ole’ Target Field. It’s been a trip on the Oregon Trail and back.

It’s a homecoming celebration with 4 games against the Seattle Mariners. A King and Queen must be elected… a parade, a dance and perhaps a spiked punch bowl. We have to get something done by the afternoon… there is a lot to do. Everybody get started on your float for the parade… I’ll contact the city and get the streets blocked off.

Here are some things to think about:

 

1. Stillwater – With only 19,000 residents, perhaps no other Minnesota city has as much Minnesota history dripping off of it. It is referred to as the birthplace of Minnesota because the territorial convention that began the process of becoming a state was held in Stillwater. During the convention they needed to decide where the State Capital would be and where the State University would be and where the State Prison would be. The clever folks of Stillwater carefully considered the options and chose the prison because the other two things would be way too much responsibility. Glen Perkins is from Stillwater; he did 18 years for Bank Robbery. Jessica Lange is also from Stillwater, and the large ape was from across the river in Wisconsin.

2. Our Twins – Normally when you come home from a 10 game road trip with a 6-4 record, you are satisfied. However… I can’t help but be bugged by the knowledge that it could have been an 8-2 road trip if it wasn’t for the bullpen coughing up two leads. Bullpens will blow leads from time to time but the spectacular fashion in which they occasionally do it is quite unnerving. Correct me if I’m wrong but I believe that the worst bullpen ERA in baseball now belongs to the Minnesota Twins. This may require an immediate reassignment of high leverage and low leverage roles. Belisle should be moved to low leverage and Goose Gossage should be signed for high leverage.

3. The Mariners – The Mariners have struggled on the road and the Twins have struggled at home. Las Vegas has looked at the home and road splits of each team and decided not to handicap the games because they felt that both teams were already handicapped.

4. Today’s Joe M Conversation

Mauer: I just got back from the Mall of America and I brought you all some free gifts.

McCarthy: That was nice of you… how much do I owe you?

Mauer: Nothing, Joe… they are gifts.

Maddon: You said “free gifts.” Gifts are things given to someone without payment. Why did you need to say “free” in front of gifts?

Mauer: I don’t know

Montana: People said I had a gift for winning football games.

Mauer: You guys might be overthinking this a little.

McCarthy: Will 20 dollars cover it, Joe?

Mauer: No… I bought them for you guys…

McCarthy: Here’s 20 dollars.

Mauer: Umm… alright… 20 Dollars… thanks, Joe.

Maddon: Here’s a ten and two fives.

Montana: Do you have change for a 50?

Mauer: I do now

McCarthy: What did you get us?

Mauer: Cinnabons… I got you all you guys Cinnabons…. Surprise!!!

Maddon: Joe… I hate to tell you but these things are like 4 bucks… you got ripped off.

5. Remodeling – My wife wants to remodel the house a little but it’s pricey. We went for a walk and talked about it and we agreed that with two kids in college we should probably put it off for a little while. During the walk we came across one of those wanted posters with a 10,000 reward. My wife called the number and said that I did it… the remodeling starts next week.

All of this begs one question.  Will you be remodeling your jail cell in Stillwater or your kids' dorm room at one of the other public entities that bore too much responsibility?

I 'tweaked' my kitchen about a year ago. It wasn't a full remodel ... I added some cabinets, changed the flooring, added a backsplash, added some tile to the undercounter area where the counter stools are, and changed the lighting a bit. I didn't change the counters, sink or appliances. Your wanted reward wouldn't have quite covered it. The custom cabinets and installation was slightly more than half the cost. And my kitchen is not large. It's a small, galley-style kitchen in a condo.

 

I don't have a before for comparison, but here's the mostly done shot, which doesn't show any of the beautiful tiling.

My wife and I are having wood grain ceramic tile laid throughout the house and a walk-in tile shower installed.

 

As for the cost, well, never mind.

I think my wife would like to put about half a million dollars into a $200,000 house.  I hate the process of selling so it kind of seems like the way to go rather then buying a $280,000 house with everything we want.

My landlord is doing the next best thing to remodelling for me: new windows. It is apparently a

2 day job. It is more like remodelling than you might think, as i had to clear out room around all the windows. I didn't really start doing that until i got up this morning, but at least i thought about it ahead of time...

 

The fresh air tonight will be a relief!

 

Oh, and i found my softball jersey. They shouldn't give me a hard time tomorrow. And maybe this time i'll get on base!

I'm still waiting for this magical winning streak from the Indians to happen...anyone else still waiting?...I had a look at one of their forums and they seem to think it will happen at some point...I'm not that convinced to be honest. At the moment they seem to win one loss one win one lose one etc They seem to think they have the division wrapped up already lol....they need to realise that this is not the same team that won only 59 games and lost 103 games! Last season was the first time they won the division since 2007...now they think they're world beaters

I wonder if the Tigers or even the White Sox will realize this division might be had with as little as 85 wins and make an aggressive deal early.  Not sure what impact players are available at this point but there's no reason any of the 5 teams can't win this division.  I suppose the Royals could try too but that seems like a dumb move for them and they don't normally make dumb moves.

In regards to the Royals, the best thing for the Twins would be if Dayton Moore thinks their core can make one more miracle run... They'll miss the playoffs, and all of their pending FA's leave without getting anything back in return.

Look I've had a long hard think about it and its quite simple really...all the Twins have to do is buy Clayton Kershaw from the Dodgers and increase his current contract of $35,571,428 to $35,571,429....he'll be buzzing to join the Twins for that extra dollar and then division title is a guarantee

Lol ... I collect refrigerator magnets ... I've travelled quite a bit over the years and those are the only souvenirs I purchase for myself. I have been known to buy myself a more extravagent gift, but that really has little to do with being a souvenir and more to do with buying myself an occasional nice gift, like these Reuge music boxes from Switzerland.

Got new carpeting in living room, hallway, and bedroom. Hired a guy who did it in 1 day. Labor and carpet cost me close to a 1000!!

The inlaid wood music box is incredible.

 

Quite a few years ago when I used to travel about the US quite a bit, I tended to stop in airport gift shops and pick up cheesy souvenirs with the airport name on it and give them away to a friend that collected such things.

Not to change the subject of home improvements (haha) but I think to stay in the division race we need to add one reliable reliever for sure possibly two. So far the division appears to be fairly weak I think 86 to 88 games might win it.

I sell antiques in a shop in Stillwater.  Jessica Lange visited often and Sam Shepard also.  Nice people.  But it only takes a few to ruin things. They just wouldn't leave Jessica alone. Someone flattened all her tires one time, and folks would go up to their door. Didn't take long and they moved.
