With twins pitching the way it is you go with pitching. No questions asked. unless there's a Bryce Harper out there( which there isn't) you go pitcher. The days of a Joe Mauer catcher prospect are probably over and that was a once in a lifetime pick I believe. Any other team nowadays probably puts him somewhere else. He had the advanced bat and catching tools to be up when he was 20. Gotta go pitcher!

Wasn't trying to suggest that.  I was just explaining why Correa took so much less - I think he signed for less than 4 other players drafted behind him.  I agree that the Twins will save $ with the first pick and (hopefully) can spread that around in lower rounds.

If college was not an option then what were his choices?  4.8 is what he would get as a top 3 pick the following year.  He still got the second highest bonus that year,.

Did he?  I was under the impression he signed for less than Buxton, Zunion and Gausman and whatever Appel was demanding.  I could easily be wrong.

And my real point was I kind of want that college ACE, if there is one, now, more than Schartz (and I really don't need another 6 year HS project at this point....they are drafting high enough to take a great college player).

It's way too early, but someone recently mentioned 4 guys as frontrunners for #1/1, and 3 were pitchers. The bad news? Scouting reports on all 3 indicate they end up as #2 types and not aces. There may be more recent info, and there may be subsequent candidates who fit the ace description. The pitchers were college guys from Vandy, FL State, and another place (Faedo?). The 4th guy was a Vandy outfielder.

The point is, we occasionally experience entire drafts which are void of a single guy who the pundits project as an ace. Wouldn't it just be the Twins luck to have this draft be one of them?

Why should it matter what the pundits think?

Isn't that why the team employs scouts?

I'd hope they are not drafting from pundits rankings.

There will likely be an ace or near ace somewhere in this draft.

It's not illegal to outscout everyone and find him. I don't care if it's a guy the pundits have as a 27th rounder.

Normally i would follow the philosophy of taking the best player available, but given how badly this franchise needs quality pitchers at all levels, it has to be the best pitcher (preferably college level) available.

It would be nice if the Twins got a supp pick after the first round this year.  I don't think we'll know until January though.

I don't know, the Twins had to have made a killing this year in revenue with all the tickets they sold and advertisers they attracted.

Maybe they can give Suzuki a QO and tell him if he accepts it they'll shoot his dog.

The first several picks in the draft, with minor changes in the order, have gone pretty much as expected for several years. That's why it matters, to us in this kind of discussion, what the pundits think or have learned from the clubs. What else do we have to go on?

The Twins obviously aren't drafting from pundits rankings. I can't imagine anyone here thinking that.

But you're right, by next June, someone will probably emerge with the consensus being that he projects to be an ace. Let's hope so. I was simply mentioning one article or chat (maybe Klaw?) where none of the 4 prospects mentioned were, in the writer's mind, better than a #2.

Every draft, often in later rounds, one or more players surprises ALL the scouts and pundits and eventually becomes an ace. But the obvious ones aren't available with the 27th pick as a rule.

All I can hope for is the new prez gets his drafting and player development staff in place before this draft.

The big tourney of the 2017 HS crop, Perfect Game's WWBA World Championship, is coming up in less than a month in Jupiter, FL.  I've seen Deron Johnson there the past couple of years, wondering if Falvey is going to be there himself.

At this very, very point, they should pick Hunter Greene. He will be in AA by 2019 and knocking on the door in 2020. He should be on the same MLB track as most college arms and, again at the very early point, he is the only real ace in the draft.

Then, in the 2018 draft, they should pick up Will Banfield... If they can. He is going to be "the next big thing" There is no reason to believe that the Twins can't pull of another awful season and pick #1 again right?

You forgot the part of the equation where another team would need to sign Suzuki and surrender a pick.

I just hope people don't get their hopes up too much for next season.

This year has been demoralizing to say the least.

According to BA, top College pitcher Alex Faedo just had surgery on both of his knees and will be out of Fall ball.  Doesn't sound serious as it's just arthroscopic and he should be ready for the 2017 season.

Eric Longenhagen of Fangraphs just posted a blog doing an early breakdown of the RH Pitchers in the 2017 draft.

EDIT: He also gives a review of a kid from Burnsville, MN. Nice!

Looking at that vid of Greene, wow, he has the look of a future stud for a barely 17 year old kid, already 6'4"200lbs. All arms and legs coming at ya, but in a coordinated way. Sounds like he has a great make up too especially after reading this:

Hmm... coached by Aaron Hicks...

Interesting pick.  If he's a Bryce Harper type (i.e. once in a generation), I'd have no problem taking him.  Only real concern I have here is that the write-ups on him basically say that his changeup is non-existent and the curve is nowhere near ready.  That's not a guy who is going to be in AA to start.  He may not be on the Kohl Stewart track for patience, but he's going to have to master pitches 2 and 3 if he's going to be the ace we need.

Sound like his breaking ball is a very nice pitch in this write-up.

Here is also talks about his plus curve and says he needs more consistency with his change-up, meaning it has shown some flash.

I'm just saying, this is the #1 pick in the 2017 draft. He won't start off in AA, but he should have no problem getting there in 2 years and knocking on the MLB door in three. He is the only ace at this time in the draft.

I'd say that's possible.  We should certainly have a better picture of this come May time frame.  I'm just hoping we see a sure fire ace there that is worthy of that top pick.. If not, I want one of those once in a decade hitters... been a while since Harper was drafted, I want the next Harper...

2018 might bring in that magic bat. There is going to be Seth Beer(awesome name) from Clemson. His numbers are outstanding.

Also, it's really early here, Will Banfield as a high school catcher right now looks really impressive both as a catcher and with the bat. 2018 is pretty far off though.

I'm really hoping we aren't picking that high in 2018.

Me too, but unfortunately it's not unlikely if Dozier and Santana are traded.

I know this has been debated a million times but I am looking for a great to potentially elite player instead of filling a need with the #1 overall pick. Right now the team has average or below average players almost everywhere (including the farm system) so if this player realizes his potential then there will be space.

Of course it would be great if that player was a pitcher or a SS (catchers at #1 overall scare me unless they are legitimately great prospects - Mauer - Posey - Wieters types)
