So, if you're a 23 year old light hitting IF who is hitting .220/.310/.350 in high A ball, you probably don't want to say things that can be deemed sexist and stupid.  And certainly not publically through your own twitter account.  Someone forgot to tell Brooks Marlow, a 29th round pick who thinks women shouldn't be on ESPN discussing baseball.

If this guy would have put 30 seconds of thought towards what they're posting out to the Twitter world, all of this could be avoided.

Unfortunately we're all living in a world where we want to be first to break the news, or have the hottest sports take first.

Frankly, nobody should say something like that.  Her gender has no bearing on her ability to do the job.  If you're trying to live a dream of a lifestyle that's going to be very public you may want to be a bit smarter than that.

Putting her gender a side - she really is bad and doesn't offer anything to the broadcast.  I turned the volume down last night because I couldn't stand listening to her.

Yeah, that Vin Scullly guy never played baseball either. What a hack, get off the radio you don't know what you're talking about!

Jessica Mendoza is an analyst though. I'd rather hear the opinion of an ex-MLB player than an ex-softball player.

And if he had said something to that affect, he'd be in a much better position.

Damnit, Van! I was just going to say that.

couldn't disagree more. Most ex jocks are terrible at this stuff. So, you don't like Olney or KLAW or any other person that hasn't played?

Sure, I like those guys, but they provide something different. Olney has stats and insights on players. Klaw is from the scouting/analytical side. Isn't Mendoza supposed to be from the former player angle? It just seems like she's in the role of a fan in the booth. Hopefully that doesn't come off too harsh.

It's not really a big deal to me, but I'd rather listen to Dallas Braden.

Mendoza has received compliments from Olney, Law, and everyone else involved with ESPN with her work since being hired. However, what really caught my eye (or ear, rather) was listening to Dan Shulman, the excellent play by play guy with ESPN radio and sometimes ESPN TV. He talked about how he and Mendoza have worked together through the year and how open she is to criticism from her peers in trying to be the best she can at her job. That's impressive to me. She's not just trying to coast now that she has the job - she's actually trying to be as good as she possibly can at it.

She is not truly providing the "former player" angle. She provides the player analysis while providing insight as to why certain movements feel awkward to players. Her breakdown of the change in Jason Heyward's swing over his career was impressive during a Cubs Sunday night game this year. That's her specialty, and in that modality, she's excellent.

However, hearing a high-pitched tone delivering certain words will always disturb some ears. I remember the first time I sat with guys listening to a female broadcast a football game. She was tremendous in her football knowledge and did not miss a single cue, even catching line stuff that no guy watching the game with me caught, yet at nearly every break of the game, the guys were complaining about her presence in the broadcast.

No, we live in a world where people talk first and think later.

I think it's absolutely awesome when women who know their stuff do broadcasts/talk sports.  We have to endure a bunch of men who can't seem to get the easiest stuff/info correct, if a woman can get the job done, it works for me.  Basically, anyone competent, or hopefully better, works for me.

Suzyn Waldman has been a color commentator for the Yankees (radio, which is harder, because you have to talk more) since 2005.  The first woman to hold the job more than sporadically.  He was a reporter previously and kinda lived through hell in the Yankees' locker room.  There is a Jesse Barfield story one can google.  In the beginning of her job, multiple times she was voted the worst NY Sports commentator by fans.  Right now, things have changed.  She is pretty much established and people are blind to the fact that she is a woman.

Too bad to see that kind of reaction by Brooks Marlow, especially given the fact that he will never be as good a player as Jessica Medoza was.  In addition to the Olympic medals, her senior year in College she hit .367/.471/.713, 14 HRs in 64 games.  I would suspect that if they were to settle this in an old school home run derby, he might lose.

I have to admit I was skeptical about a woman announcer, but after listening to multiple broadcasts this season, I think she's fine.  She knows her stuff and doesn't overdo it.

Turns out, there's a hell of a lot of female fans, and she brings insight, fun and knowledge in areas that men have limitations.

Agree with the first half, not the second half.

This is the player's fault, not society's.
