Best Minor League Signings of 2016

They become really good signings when they get flipped for prospects... :)  at least that's my view on Kintzler and Abad... not quite as sure about Grossman.

Part of being really bad is that you have the opportunity to addition the best of minor league signees

You have priority over waiver claims, but everyone has a shot at free agents, right?

That is correct.

Positive new about the Twins will not be received well :)

What's positive?  Saying that 3 Twins with barely average to below average performances are on top of the dumpster diving pile?

The bad news is that the are their closer, set up man and starting left fielder and in those roles they are in the bottom quarter in the majors.

Sure.  Among dwarfs someone who is 5'2" might be treated as a giant, but among the rest of the population...

That guy at MLB rumors should really change the title to "best minor league free agent signings", because the way he has it, it refers to international and undrafted free agent minor leaguers who were signed this year as amateurs.

Yup, can argue with MLBTR's opinion when put into "Twins context":

These guys are another group of AAAA-type players that are holding down roster spots for Twins minor leaguers to develop further.  They are serving a purpose, for now.

Yeah, I think Abad is a solid trade chip.  Kintzler might not bring back anything.  I'm torn on Grossman.  He was a top 100 prospect and he's taking really good at bats.  I'm sure he's somewhat lucky but unless they get a crazy good deal for him, I'd keep him and let him and Rosario share the LF/4th OF role going forward.

If your team is good....you probably don't have room for 3 minor league players that no one actually wanted, right? I think that was the point, if you have an awful team, you have room to add players to your roster.

that said, of course they should get credit for these signings.

I too hope they are mostly flipped. RPs especially are inconsistent....

The killer i look at Rochester with the failed Twins prospects and minor league free agents vs. actual prospects waiting to get a chance, and it is even worse, at least before the All-Star break. Besides the players already on the 40-man (Polanco, Walker, Murphy, Park, Dean, Berrios, Chargolis, Meyer, Boshers) ,there are only a couple that you would add at the moment (Beresford for the heck of it, Palka, Wheeler, Baxendale) and probably (except for Palka) not permanently. You might wish to give another chance to O'Rourke or Albers, and maybe a look at Burnett...but Greenwood, Waldon, Darnell...and not sure where Wimmers fits into Twins plans. But the offense side is full of MiLFA: Mastro, Schafer, Field, Tovar, Rodriguez, Paulino, Wickens, Britton, Meneses. Half the roster, fer sure, made up of fodder.

I saw this. Two thoughts:

The Twins this year are garbage and so have more open spots to give these sorts of players. It's not that surprising to see multiple members of the team on this list.

Terry Ryan is at his best when he is working cheap. His issue is that he doesn't do a good job with a lot of money to spend, like he's had the past few years. So his major contracts (Phil Hughes, Ricky Nolasco in particular) and big free agent signings have been bad. But his small moves for scrap heap guys have generally been positive.

This doesn't absolve the GM by any means. It does mean the Twins have to rethink the way they do business.

Yeah, good point.  I was just trying to clarify whether the pool under discussion were free agents, or free agents plus waiver claims.

Agreed, I hope at least the RPs get traded for guys wiht a shot who don't have to be on the 40-man next year.  Well, OK, I'd trade all three of them for a starting ML-average catcher, but that isn't going to happen since we no longer have Brian Duensing to include as a sweetener.
