I find this very interesting:

http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/donald-trump-had-the-top-bid-on-the-minnesota-twins-in-1984-but-lost/

"So why isn't Trump the Twins' owner now? Well, MLB owners make the decision, and it's not uncommon for that boys club to push for an owner they'd prefer instead of the highest bidder. Someone more outspoken -- like, say, Mark Cuban -- is less desirable."

White Sox owner, specifically, would block Cuban and apparently he has a lot of pull/support among owners  There's some strong dislike there, apparently.

Trump would have built fences 250 feet from home plate, and made the Mexican League pay for it.

It would be hard to compete in today's game though if he deported all of his Latin players though.

winner!

In all honesty, what do you suppose it would take for the Pohlads to sell the team.  According to Forbes they are worth $910M as of March.  If someone came and offered them full price $910M would they accept?  $1 Billion?

Supply and demand... There's plenty of billionaires out there, and only 30 MLB franchises. I'd imagine the prospective owner would have to pay $1.5-2 billion to get them out of this cash cow.

This is a different league of course, but there's not many recent examples of MLB owners selling:

- The Milwaukee Bucks were valued at $405 million in 2014 by Forbes, and were sold for $550 million later that year.

- The Los Angeles Clippers were valued at $575 million in 2014 by Forbes, and were sold for $2 Billion.

Wow. I had no idea this was a possibility as this was before my time. Just think what could have been...

Before your time?  Ok, now I hate you   ;)

I would also bet the Twins value starts to increase substantially when they start drawing closer to the expiration of their God-awful TV deal. It would be nice to have new ownership in place once the Twins start benefiting from the windfall of that new revenue.

1984 was before a lot of our times on this board. Thus, our lack of patience with management. Some of us weren't old enough to remember the last Twins World Series.

I think the era of mega-cable-sports deals is over now. Unbundling and streaming is the direction that television media is going. The Twins blew their chance at a big payday by having one of the worst products on the field during that period.

That's me! I was only 1 year old the last time the Twins won the WS...

Great perspective.  My 1st exposure to the Twins, and really baseball:  Sept. 1965  Twins vs. Dodgers.

Honestly, didn't know anything about baseball and didn't really care.  I was 7.  Some guy with a weird name [Kaat] against another guy with a weird name [Koufax].

Beyond the Old Boys Club back then being what is was,  I'm also reasonably sure Mr. Trump had a rep back then as a wheeler - dealer.  And that would have been way too much for the old stogie suckers back then.

I was 7.  Already the old man   :jump:

I must be ancient.  I was 8 when the Twins won in 91.

He would have "Made the Twins Great Again". I betcha we would have won 2 World Series in 1987, if not more.

Nobody makes a better baseball team than the Donald.

The Donald: "We've got bats.  We've got the best bats.  Listen, you're going to love the baseball team that I've made."

Just the illegal ones. ;)

Van, I would like to open the discussion regarding never having experienced a championship at any point in our fandom.

Gopher hockey. That's the best I got.

Go!

Ok. I'll start. I was three in '91. My mom woke me up to watch the celebration (good mom obviously). Fond memory for sure. But now, I am confused. What is winning even like?

Well, I haven't had a professional team that is my favorite in that sport win a championship since the mid 90s.  My oldest child (who is married, owns his home and has already served his enlistment) wasn't alive the last time the Twins won a W. Series.

The last time any team that is my favorite team in a sport won a championship happened this year when UND won the National Championship in hockey this year.
