I'm actually somewhat optimistic with Buxton. While none of his injuries are good, they have generally been impact injuries which need not be as chronic as soft tissue injuries. As he gets older and more mature I think he'll play under a little more control and a little less recklessly.

Jeff Sullivan: Rosario is kind of a lot like Renfroe. Jankowski is sort of a Kepler equivalent, overall, with more glove but less bat. So then you’re left with Buxton and Margot. Margot feels safer; Buxton feels like he has more upside

Kyle: Ignore the Twins’ “elephant in the room” pitching situation for a moment. I’m worried about their position players, with the exact same question marks, concerns, and uncertainties as 2016: Buxton and Sano strike out a ton. Mauer is a platoon player at this point. The DH-types have been underwhelming and injured. Kepler had a nice rookie season but faded in the 2nd half, so he’ll have to re-adjust to the league. Polanco is expected to start at SS fulltime, will have growing pains, and has defensive questions. Rosario is a good defender with serious plate-discipline concerns that tanked him last year. And then there is Brian Dozier, everyone’s favorite candidate to regress in 2017. There are serious “everyone is going to bust” vibes a-plenty. Are my concerns legitimate, or should I just relax and enjoy these guys as they evolve toward their potentials? (Primarily Sano into peak-offense Adam Dunn and Buxton into Mike Cameron)

Jeff Sullivan: I’d just be happy the team is so young. It’s going to be a while, probably, before the Twins emerge from all this, but you don’t have to look far for upside at most positions. Of course there are numerous discipline or contact concerns, but, say, Sano’s contact problem is offset by his elite raw power. Buxton’s contact problem is offset by his outstanding other skills. The Twins don’t have it so bad here

Jeff Sullivan: Probably something in the vicinity of 1%. Would be worth a quick study. You’d also have a little drop in walk rate. Small differences over a large sample of time

What Sano really needs is a big Thome type lefty hitting right behind him. 

 

And... That ability to lay off pitches out of the zone that he had his rookie year. 

 

Those two things

 

And... Focus on defense... 

 

OK... Those three things.

and a willingness to hit a ball on the outside corner ... and if it's called a strike don't eye the umpire like he's an evil vampire.

Yeah we found out Fangraphs and B-Ref have vastly different WAR values. I was looking at Fangraph's WAR at the time.

This is interesting analysis. None of those players are all that similar. And I can't really wrap my head around what would make Margot a safer player than Buxton.

I was looking fangraphs DRS.  They have Buxton at 3 DRS in 773 innings last year.  This does not seem correct.

Look at some of comparisons.  Jayson Hayward had 4 DRS in 171 innings in CF.  I really question these numbers.  OK.  I know I am biased Twins fan and Heyward is decent, but Buxton is an elite defensive CF.  On stat cast his route efficiency is really good (high 90s).

I really think Buxton is going to cut down his Ks a bit this year.  Just watching him in spring training he seems to be flailing a lot less.

A little disappointed he didn't cite Parker's articles. Sometimes I think these national writers just stick their noses in their data and don't do much surfing for other information.

Honestly I was expecting they would be #28 or #29. 1 WAR projection for Berrios in 92 innings is good. 

 

They also only project Meija for 65, but think he's the number 5 starter. Given the IPs projection, it looks more like they think Duffey is the number 5 to start, and the paragraph is off.....

 

If Berrios puts up that much WAR in that few innings, people here will be happy.
