mlbtraderumors: Twins reached out on Storen

I'm coming to the conclusion payroll is tight.

Hope I'm wrong.

Could be, but I wouldn't think they'd put the winning bid on Park if it was.

I've been critical of the front office, but not of payroll lately. Just seems like there might be a bunch of young bullpen options in the next couple years. Might not want to tie up roster spots for vets. If that's the case, I wish that would have been a stronger consideration for the rotation the last couple years.

Yea, I don't think it is the $6 mil, but the 3 years for good but not great relievers.

But yet they basically gave the same amount to Mike Pelfrey...

At some point Terry Ryan will realize that if you want to sign GOOD relief pitchers you have to commit multiple years. Hasn't signed one to more than one year in 17 years, I'm hoping some day he will see the light.

Kinda, sure. but, wouldn't they be better off with Rendon at 2B, Desmond at SS, and Plouffe at 3B?

Where does Trea Turner play in that scenario?

Where does Trea Turner play in that scenario?

If Trea Turner is in the mix, then the question is: where does Rendon play? and the answer, so far, appears to be in the OF somewhere other than Washington.

Yeah, I don't think Plouffe is a fit and, frankly, they probably aren't expecting ML player in return.  Plouffe would be a pretty big overpay, in my opinion.

The Nats need to move him, he's only got 1 year left, he'll make 8m+ and, as others have said, he could have some attitude issues.  He won't cost as much as Jepsen to get.

Was he? Huh, I thought they were moving him to 3B full time. Apologies if I'm wrong.

Trea Turner should be their SS next year.....

They are moving him to 3B full time, he played 2B because Escobar was at third base.

Rendon plays third in 2016 with Turner in the Mix at SS

With Storen you also would get a draft pick in 2017.

I'm not sure.  I mean, if we put him at closer and he had a solid year, he'd probably reject a QO but if we used him as a set-up guy, I'm not sure (although, we could just offer a QO and pay a high price for an extra year if we had to).  I don't mind making him the closer over Perkins, mind you.  I think that would be fine, actually.  In any event, I don't think he'll cost much and I like him a lot as a relief pitching option.  I've wanted the Twins to make this deal since Paps got traded.

If the Twins were willing to bump Perkins from the closer role, it would also really alleviate the need to get another strong lefty for the pen, because at this point the way the Twins use him, Perkins isn't a lefty, he's a closer.

If the Nats are dealing, I wonder if a Storen/Milone swap would work.

That would be a perfect deal for the Twins.

It would NEVER happen, but if the Twins had Storen, Perkins and Jepsen I would love to have them basically rotate the 7th/8th/9th innings to whoever was best suited for the various batter/pitcher match-ups. I think it  is such a waste when a closer won't pitch for 4-5 games because: 1. Their team is never in a save situation (down a 1 run or two or tied late)

In fairness, I believe Molitor used Perkins a lot more than the usual 3-out save last year.  But I'm too lazy to look that up.  But I'm pretty sure our relief pitchers were used differently than how Gardy would have used them - whether that was a good idea is another debate.

This. I think the whole closer thing is the next accepted baseball wisdom to crumble.

Plouffe + Milone
For
Storen, LHRP Nick Lee, C Jakson Reetz

Would this work?

Why would you want Lee and Reetz?  Reetz would be about 5th in the Twins' catching prospect list  and Lee is not a prospect.     Plus the $ is not balanced.  Plouffe + Milone is a few mil more than Storen.  And I don't get why the Nats (or anyone else) might want Milone

That's been predicted for years and I think it is less likely now as it has been in a while.

A prime example where the reality of dealing with humans trumps a slight advantage that could theoretically be gained.

Great post!

I don't think it's going to happen, bumping Perkins from the closer role...not now anyway...but he is not a "lefty", he is a closer.

I have no problem adding Storen. I'd love to have Storen. But I'm confused on this whole scenario. More than likely, May or Duffey will be spending most of, if not all of, the next season in the bullpen due to keeping your best arms, and depth in the rotation. We also have quite a few highly regarded, hard throwing RHRP that are getting close, at least one of whom will probably make an appearance at some point in 2016. Additionally, of course, there is still Jepsen, Fien, Pressly and Tonkin.

But where is the LH option? We don't have a power lefty that projects for 2016 unless later in the year perhaps. So again, I'm a little confused where Storen is the priority at this point.

I'd do that deal.  Milone is bound determined that he is a starter (kinda like Mike Pelfrey).  The Twins don't need him either.  He's fine as a #5 maybe #4 starter but we already have enough of those as it is.

Good point.  All three could be rotated as closer.
