Maybe related to this?

"Phil Hughes leaving Target Field now to get a shot to treat his back. Had to shut down bullpen session Tuesday due to pain." - Phil Miller (@MillerStrib) August 13, 2015

Oh wow.

Did the Twins just get considerably better through injury? I love Phil Hughes and all but he's been so volatile lately that it's hard to watch him pitch a game.

Gibson, May, Milone, Pelfrey, Santana isn't my favorite rotation but outside of Berrios being called up, it's the best one Minnesota can field in the short term.

Happy that I am that May is starting, he isn't remotely stretched out.  Is it basically a bullpen game, with Duffey taking Hughes' regular spot in the rotation?  If it's a regular spot, shouldn't that go to Berrios?

EDIT: I guess Miller followed up with a tweet "Tyler Duffey likely here for just one start".  May will have to get up to speed pretty quickly.  And of course, that leaves our pen back at near zero...

This is acceptable if Duffey is for one start and then Milone takes his place. But man, they seem to be going out of their way to make sure Berrios doesn't start.

I can certainly get behind May returning. It's especially good if Boyer gets back to high leverage innings.

I also wonder if Pelfrey might have been pitching for his job last night, though the Hughes news probably rendered that moot for the rest of the year.

I guess I take as May taking Hughes spot, with Milone rejoining the rotation after Duffey gets a spot start and sent back down.  Miller tweeted that May will get multiple starts.

Paul Molitor says Trevor May limited to roughly 50 pitches tomorrow. But likely will make more than one start.

May starts Friday, Tyler Duffey Sat, Milone Sunday

Well I'll be jiggered!

I'm down with this. Actually glad Duffey is getting another shot after being thrown to the Lions in TO.

They could easily release Jason Wheeler at AAA if they wanted to add someone to the 40 man roster.

Nobody is claiming that guy after the horrible seasons he has had. Can you say scholarship, to the 40 man. He isn't the only one but he would not likely get claimed.

They only have 39 on the 40 man as is.

Since it's just one start, I'm good with Duffey. Doesn't make sense to add Berrios to the 40-man for one start. As I've said, Duffey is very deserving.

Nice to see May get a start, and a wise decision to limit him as well. JR Graham likely #2 that game.

I watched Hughes a little bit on Sunday and he definitely didn't physically look right. He looked like he was pushing the ball instead of just throwing it. Hopefully it's nothing too serious and the two weeks between starts will be good for him.

They don't even need to. They have an open spot...

I want to see Berrios called up too, but not for one start. That wouldn't make much sense.

Berrios probably has about 5-6 starts before they would shut him down. Enough time to finish out the AAA season and could still bank some for relief appearances in September if the Twins hang on.

I certainly want to see him but I'm not completely offended by playing it safe with their best arm in the minors.

It's not going to break my heart if Berrios doesn't get a call but I'd like to see him.

At least it appears they're finally moving May back into the rotation. I'm calling today a win for Twins fans.

I absolutely love the idea that Boyer will return to his proper role of best RH relief option.

Just leave May in the pen, ferpetesakes. This plan gives me an upset stomach.

You might have to clarify that TO abbreviation for us non-Canadians.

Jepsen is the best RH relief option.

I'd like to see Duffy up to stay.

Even if there's no room for him at the MLB level next year (knock on wood) if he could manage not to be a disaster he could make a nice complementary piece in any off season trade.

Young controlable starters always have value, but they seem to have more if they have some MLB experience.

Sorry, I should have put T.O. pronouncing the letters individually. It's a common reference for Toronto here.

Wait -- what?  Am I reading that correctly?  You want Boyer pitching high leverage innings?

It was a joke.

I haven't wanted Boyer on the team for some time now, and by usage patterns I suspect Molitor and Allen feel about the same way.

Hughes to the DL, Milone just coming back from the DL ( would prefer  a couple rehab starts for him), May not stretched out which means not only is he going to give few innings but is taken out of the pen and more innings needed out of the pen..    Sounds to me like we need Berrios, Duffey and Meyer up here.

Save on travel costs to bring Buxton with them?

Thanks, what threw me was the common positive sentiment about May starting, followed by the Boyer comment...

That's a good observation too.

We have:

- May starting a bullpen game Friday, limited to 50 pitches (probably 3-4 innings), followed by

- Duffey on Saturday (who lasted 2 innings his first time out, and will have gone 3 weeks without throwing as many as 70 pitches in a start at any level), followed by

- Milone on Sunday, who won't have thrown a single pitch in a game in 2+ weeks, and hadn't recorded an out beyond the 6th inning for 3+ weeks before that.

All in a pennant race, without May available in the pen, against the same team that battered us for 34 runs in 3 games last weekend...

Let's see if I have this straight:

May, Duffey, Milone this weekend, followed by Gibson, Pelfrey, Santana vs. the Crankees {hey look, it's a 6 man rotation!}

That gets us to 8/20, so May followed by Milone, Gibson, Pelfrey and then an off day on 8/24 {this assumes that Duffey has been returned to Rochester}

If Hughes is placed on the DL retroactive to 8/10, then he's back with the team on 8/25.

Is it wrong of me to root for Pelfrey to have another good start on 8/23 so that he looks like a veteran inning eater for a contender? Then Hughes slides into his spot on the rotation and we keep May in as well.

For a little more craziness, there is no game on 8/31 either so we could shuffle the rotation if we need to just in case Milone makes a good start on 8/27 to add to his body of work and make him attractive as an August pickup...hmm, who could we put in the rotation in his spot after 9/1...?

Love the fact the Twins are relevant this year. We're not quite dead yet.

It took until today for this bungling to hurt the Twins...Fien is the first RHer out of the pen late in a tie game instead of May, and to nobody's great surprise, the game is no longer tied.

Duffey, by the way, pitched Tuesday, so he'll be on short rest Saturday.  Goodee!  Pretty much guarantees a short start, even if he pitches well.

Berrios, by the way, last pitched on Saturday.  He'd be available on normal rest Friday, or on extra rest Saturday.

But no.  Bullpen game Friday, using up your most reliable RH bullpen arm in the process, followed by a guaranteed short start Saturday, followed up by a likely short start Sunday.
