Tigers Release GM Dombrowski

Wow. I wonder what made them make the decision right now? Could be a potential TR successor nonetheless.

You think he will be available when TR decides to quit on his own terms 6-7 years from now?

I am no Tigers expert, but I could see a scenario where Dombrowski was planning on leaving no matter what Illitch's feelings were about him coming back or going next year.

They developed players, made some big trades and threw a ton of money into it. They had a nice long run, but ultimately failed in accomplishing the ultimate goal. It was time for a change… time to move on.

I could see where Dombrowski would be very interested in being Larry Lucchino's replacement in Boston and Illitch, as a kind gesture let him out of his contract to get a leg up in the process of obtaining that position.

I would be surprised if Boston wasn't very interested.

Just a guess.

That's an interesting take.....and I wouldn't be surprised at all if that's what happens.

Boston is already denying interest.....

Is that like giving a manager a show of support before firing him?

I suppose you could blame Dombrowski for the Tigers getting old, but they were always going for it and thought they could get over the hump.  Maybe he figured a big rebuild is coming and someone else should start it, if he wasn't returning.

Or maybe he didn't want to dump all the players that he was being told to dump.  Who knows?  Fun to speculate, though.

I'd guess he did what he thought was right this deadline, and his owner wanted someone new because he didn't get them over the hump.

He built FL, he built the Tigers, if he wants, he'll build again.....

I'm guessing he'll go to the Angels.

If I was Dombrowski and I were to take that position. Arte Moreno would have to agree that Mike Scioscia is toast and out of a job and Moreno must take a step back and not interfere with my vision.

2 things that I have a hard time believing can happen.

Can't wait to find out more. The initial sound of it seems like a firing, perhaps for selling instead of buying. Perhaps though this was planned and Dombrowski didn't want to make Avila have to start his career on a sour note.

Also, so we can cross Alex Avila off the free agent catcher list now? That situation can't be fun.

I think the Twins can survive that tremendously disappointing lost opportunity. ;)

This is a great read.

Looks good. I have to go to bed, but will be reading this. If I remember right, Oxtung and I had a little nerd sesh putting together numbers to grade GM's. So this will be interesting to see how this guy does it.

He should replace St Peter and let St Peter go back to the advertising business. Be nice to have a baseball guy run the team.

Friendly reminder: St Peter is ultimately the one who green lit and defended the Marty Cordova/Cancer Kid commercial to try to guilt the public into a stadium deal before it got pulled ASAP due to outrage.

Dombrowski would be a great hire by the Twins. I think a lot of the Tigers issues were due to an owner who got involved to much (that terrible prince fielder contract)

Wow, after reading that I want to punch somebody in the face. An 80 page paper? It was a good read for the most part, but he could have easily done the same in 40 pages. I hate it when people can't get to the point. Anyway, besides the best-seller-want-to-be-novel aspect, the point is real. In normal companies, CEO's make the money. In baseball, the product developers (or engineers) make the money. I'd be ok with that, considering I majored in engineering at the U and am looking at a secondary electrical engineering degree currently.

If Moneyball has taught us anything, its that the GM position has a huge influence on baseball. My presumptions about Terry Ryan are correct, he is a middle of the road GM. He doesn't add anything, he doesn't lose anything (because he barely does anything). Innovators at this position are hard to come by. Partly because owners have always hired "baseball" guys instead of creative thinkers.

I think this trend is ending. I truly believe owners have advisers for just about everything, and these advisers will tell them to not hire regurgitated GM's. Rather, try an innovative approach.

I'm still supporting hiring Dombrowski, because I believe he would be at the top had he not been pressured into stupid contracts. However, he qualifies as a regurgitate. More than anything else, the successor to Terry Ryan should be someone with new ideas. I hold a very strong opinion toward his dismissal.
