Ryan admits that Twins are in sell mode

If they trade Willingham (to mention the most obvious choice) for a "never will be", what does that accomplish?

Less obstructed playing time for younger players like Parmelee, Arcia, Santana, Pinto or Vargas and a free 40-man spot to add someone like Meyer or Rosario.

I find the title of this thread amusing-"Ryan Admits Twins Are in Sell Mode". Where exactly in his quote does he says the words "sell mode"? He says two things: 1)The Twins have been "in a tough spot for four years" and 2)that they have "to listen". This exactly what every GM says every year at trade time. No one is untouchable, we always listen, etc, etc. And then when nothing happens(or very little) they say they had conversations but that nothing made sense.

A couple of thoughts from reading other comments. I agree that we as fans would like to see good baseball for the rest of the year and beyond. But having Willingham batting third/clean up to me isn't good baseball. If guys like Suzuki and Morales are part of the long term plan, fine-sign them to extensions. If not turn the reins over to Pinto, Arcia, Parmalee, and even Colabello. I'd even rather see Nunez in left everyday than Willingham at this point.

Find out if any of these guys are part of the solution or just AAAA players. The worst that happens is another top draft pick. The plan was never to contend this year, it was to build a base for future years. Correia and Willingham definitely aren't part of that. Suzuki and Morales, probably not. Perkins and Dozier-hopefully.

But again, Ryan didn't say the team was going to be sellers-he said they'd listen to offers.

Just saw Chase Headley traded to Yankees. Offensive numbers(and money owed for rest of season)are very similar to Willingham but Headley is much younger and a much better defender. Padres got a utility guy(Solarte) and a A+ pitcher(DePaula) who projects as a relief pitcher.

With age and defensive differences I'm guessing the Twins are looking for a little less than that in return for Willingham-so not much at all. Still think they should pull the trigger on a deal though.

See? if we had kept Solarte we coulda had Chase Headley!!!

.

Since the Yankees cut Nunez to keep Solarte, and then traded Solarte for Headley, maybe we should offer them Nunez back for Headley.

I love watching the baseball world turn :)

then there are those guys that had the misfortune of being the A's or the Blue Jays' 40th man - poor old Brad Mills is getting moved again. Mills might be playing for his 4th organization this year if he gets claimed by another team.

I completely agree and would like to go further: instead of the 1-for-2 trades netting us the likes of Alex Presley and Pedro Hernandez, I'd prefer to go 2-for-1 and package the veteran that a particular team wants plus a C+ prospect at the same position that they give us a B+ prospect for (adjust downward if we're talking about Correia).

Willingham plus Dalton Hicks to the Reds for Jesse Winker, for example.

If that's aiming too high, so be it, can always come down, but I'd like to adjust that aim upward somehow.

Unfortunately, MLB trades rarely work out that way.

If Willingham was a decent 3B, he'd probably be traded already. Actually, he wouldn't have signed with us for 3/21 coming off a 121 OPS+ season in the first place! :)

Also remember that after July 31st it isn't over - we can trade guys in August too. That's when we dealed Morneau. So don't be too angry if we exit July without a trade yet.

After being educated on August trades by posters after yours, I will be ANGRY if Suzuki isnt traded before and any of the others, too.

;)

edit: I'm angry about the heading of this thread as Ryan never said those words:p

Headly was traded to NY with a million dollars for Solarte, hitting .190 since May 14 and a class A reliever. You could say that the trade was a salary dump for San Diego. It makes me wonder how much the Twins will have to pay if they trade Morales.

Agreed. Or adjust the DJ Hicks upwards to Kepler, for example.

But this will be a different MO for this front office. They just have not traded top prospects.

I hope we trade Willingham for Duke Welker.

Kidding aside, does anyone really expect any more than that type of return?

I think you are looking at A C prospect like a pitcher in rookie or A ball that has high ceiling but lower floor. A risky prospect. The Twins don't need more AAAA players or relievers.
