  1. We went to the Bears game and I thought I had witnessed a bad football game. Welp, after today, I'm rethinking that assertion. That was the worst game I have ever watched till the end.
  2. Huh? At this point we are probably talking past each other and really aren't that far apart. Their year over year spending should average matching market share, whether it's record spending for them or not is what is irrelevant. Breaking personal spending records by matching market share only proves that you have under spent in the past or are in a period of inflation. If they can't be profitable spending to their market share, that's bad business on their part. My only point is if they feel they can justify years where they don't match market share because they are rebuilding, then I think it is reasonable for us to expect that they use that to their advantage and spend that money when it will result in what should be the organization's goal; winning.
  3. If Buxton doesn't have pain in his knee and is full go this off-season (considering the short recovery time of this procedure), that doesn't change the fact that there are miles on his joints. Past damage. Physically he is entering another stage of his athletic life. His 30's. Buxton always goes all-out on the field. He is proud of his speed. This is part of what makes him fun to watch. But he always gets hurt. This got me thinking of Randy Moss. That guy was fast too. At least as fast, but he never got hurt and I think it's fair to say playing a more dangerous game. The thing about Randy, the thing that made him so uniquely deceptive was he just glided. He didn't look like he was getting after it. As I've been saying lately, Buxton needs to tone it down. Just glide. Him at 90% is fast enough. Other players play within some limitations. For example his buddy Carlos doesn't steal bases. It is time for Buxton to prove he can protect himself on the field. This really is on him.
  4. I don't think anybody is rationalizing anything, everybody thinks we need more pitching. We did just lose 40% of our starting staff.
  5. 1. Maybe because he will be pitching deep into the night, bwaaaahahaha! 2. I skip national reporting because more localized reporting gives you deeper insight into your team. A national reporter can't possibly have that deep of insight into all the teams.
  6. Isn't it true that the last few years they have just spent to their market share in relation to other teams? Look, I've never been one to complain about their spending, never once said cheap Pohlads. But they are bankers and they are frugal. It is very convenient to give them a pass on unspent money by Ryan. They must've approved since they did keep him around forever in spite of poor team performance. What I am saying is I think they are close to contending, they have made some huge investments, if there ever was a time to take a loss and push some chips in, now is that time.
  7. Yes it is their equity value I was referring to. I understand it is not cash. I'm also not advocating for them to run deficits overall. I pointed out that there were years when they left some cash unspent, which is understandable in some circumstances, and I would like to see them up the ante when they have a chance to make a run. I don't think they have done this.
  8. A hard look at Cele's minor league career statistics confirms that you are correct, 👍
  9. Is this correct? If so I take back my recent comment that the increased spending under Falvey was mearly adequate. Last year was pretty good! Does it have anything to do with the best results in decades? I still think overall on the ledger the Pohlads are middle of the road at best. There have been many years when they under spent, especially under Ryan. To the OP, the Dobnak deal was a head scratcher from the outset, but a minor, practically inconsequential one. They were the highest bidder on Vasquez so they paid a premium and he had a down year. Still not a big deal, my hope is he bounces back, Jeffers continues his good play and Carmago gets a look and proves he can make Vasquez expendable in the future. Vasquez is needed presently. It is too early to judge the deals for CC and Buck. Correa provided some real value in the playoffs. We don't win that series without him.
  10. When a player is brought up with limited high minors experience, fails and then never does put it together, there is no way to know if the handling of said player caused the outcome.
  11. I will add that if Buxton can make it back to the field, less focus on explosion and pedal to the metal badassery would be prudent. He's fast enough at 90%, concentrate on smoothness if that makes any sense.
  12. I think some optimism is in order. The success rate of the particular surgery, excising the plica, is very high with a short 6 week recovery. Apparently this condition is hard to diagnose and can be confused with patella tendonitis, but they may have got it right this time after spinning their wheels last year.
  13. If you wanna take the next step, a frontline starter is the price of admission.
  14. The Pohlads are more than a billion ahead on this deal. The Pohlads had many seasons when they did not spend to their market size. In the Falvey era their spending has improved, but has been adequate, nothing more. They choose not to strategically up their spending to make a run when they have an opportunity. A banker would definitely approve of their tight grip on financials. A fan? Not so much. The Pohlads run a first class operation in many respects, but as St Peter's tone deaf comments illustrated, some of their sensibilities are lacking. It surely is a self imposed spending limit. Edit: I apologize for the thread drift
  15. If every year the Twins have a young, MLB caliber starter with options they can stash at AAA to start the season, they will have an advantage over most teams. Just like they did last year. You need depth. This could go a long way towards having another top of the league rotation. Last year it was Ober's cross to bear. This year it is Varland's. The goal should be to have Louie waiting and stretched out in St Paul refining his arsenal.
  16. The Twins would be foolish not to see if Louie can be a number 3 or better starting pitcher. If he can, he is a huge success story and we all have a happy ending. If he falters, even just pitching as a starter to the level he had in that role previously, then you have a decision to make. The Twins should aquire a pitcher talented enough to push Louie to number 6 waiting in St Paul. Like last season with Bailey Ober, if every year the Twins have enough talent to force a major league caliber starter to the number 6 depth role, that is a good thing. That is also something I only experienced last year in all my years as a fan of this club. Stockpile talent, force guys to earn a spot with the big club. Last year there was much complaining that a starter that many felt was better than some who made the cut, was "wasting" bullets in the minors. I did not join the chorus, Bailey had options and it was the logical course of action. It turned out well and Bailey got all the innings he could handle in the bigs. Unlike Ober, Varland has no innings limit or injury history and even if he starts in St Paul, chances are he pitches more MLB innings than the 144 Bailey logged.
  17. Emilio sure seems like a cool guy and man it would take guts to go through his super tough beats, but still keep showing up. Then he gets a stretch where his velo goes up along with his spirits and he rides the wave to a huge payday. Good for him.
  18. True the St Louis market is smaller (Minneapolis 15th, St Louis 24th) yet they spent 175m last year.
  19. Compensation pick after the first round, so around pick 31 or so.
  20. Let's see, should l retire, or take this little job offer for $75 MILLION DOLLARS? Hmmm..... Good on Sonny. What a great deal for the Twins. All that production and still get almost the same pick back. The brainiacs got over on that one. Sonny was fun to watch and came through for us except, unfortunately, that last outing. I shared the Twins aversion to a 3 year deal for him. All we need now is another Pablo!
  21. Varland looked great in the pen, but the Twins need rotation depth. It's going to be hard for many to take having that talent stashed in AAA. Take solace in his presence there as a sign of a strong organization. There will be injuries and they will get a good look at him to see if he can fulfill his dream of being a starter and getting paid like one. If he can't pitch to the level of, say, a #3 or better starter, then you have your answer; pen weapon.
  22. Mr Dobbs goes to Atlanta?
  23. I think it does make sense to move Polo. I don't enjoy typing that and would miss him. How would Max hold up without his buddy?
  24. Kirilloff is having a minor procedure with a short recovery time. He will be full go for spring training and have his first normal off-season in 3 years.
  25. Put me in the camp with Linus and the Fantastic Flying Finn. Just like the Sonny and Rocco narrative, the center field is dangerous narrative needs to be put to bed. I do remember Baldelli's quote and while at the time I thought it was unfortunate, it didn't seem like the door to Lewis at center was completely closed. We have seen this year how valuable defense at short and center can be. With our current roster construction, it makes too much sense to move Lewis to center. However I am not holding my breath as this is the front office that brought you Joey Gallo, lol. I will say that at this time, there still is hope that Buxton can play center. This plica surgery has a great success rate and short (6 weeks) recovery time. So I can see why right now considering the uncertainty of Buxton and the youngsters, that Lewis would stay put.
