The Twins Should Trade for This Former Gold Glover
LambchoP replied to Matthew Lenz's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'd say pass. We don't need another 2nd and 3rd base option, we need a RH outfielder. Looks like he profiles just like Larnach and Wallner. We need a speedy gold glove caliber CF, preferably RH. If we do go after an infielder it should be a first baseman with some pop. We have tons of options for 2nd base already. Lee, Julien, Castro, Martin, Eeles and Keaschal. -
Buxton is fun to watch and a great impact player. The caveat is he only plays about half a season. This means we need a legit CF that is productive enough to start 75+ games out there. Keirsey would be good for defense and speed but not sure he'd hit enough. Same with Austin Martin without the solid defense. Rodriguez and Rosario need more time in the minors which means we need to bring someone in like a Harrison Bader. I just hope it's someone athletic, fast and energetic because that's what this team needs.

Twins in 2025. Rotation, Rotation, Rotation
LambchoP replied to stringer bell's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Our rotation should be fine if we can keep them healthy and clean up our horrible defense. I really think giving guys definitive roles would be a big help. You are the first baseman. You are the second baseman. Then let them go out and play everyday and get into a routine. No more of this bouncing around the diamond, pinch hitting every other inning. -
Guys that can't hit are NOT what we need. We've got to get more athletic and clean up our defense. I think Keirsey Jr would help in defense and speed in the OF. The question is whether he can hit enough to warrant a roster spot. Twins will always need a CF to play at least half the season as Buxton insurance.

I don't think we have six starters that are ready for a rotation role. Festa and Mathews need more time at AAA. It'd be nice if we could move Paddack and sign a decent vet. I like a rotation of Lopez, Ober, Ryan, SWR and Free agent veteran Festa, Mathews, Morris are first in line as injury replacement.

A bit surprised about Severino. While he hasn't blown away minor league pitching he's been successful. 35 homers in 2023. This year he hit what 25 and hit .250? He's also still young just turning 25 and is a switch hitter. We all know the twins need a first baseman so this is a bit of a head scratcher unless they have a plan in place. Even if Severino wasn't part of our plans, I've got to believe he'd have some trade value as part of a package...

Let's see if he can handle the starting second base job and hit well enough all year before we start talking extensions. With our payroll crunch we have a few years before we have to worry about any of that. I'm really hoping some of his struggles last year were injury related. I really do not trust Julien at all at this point so I'm hoping Lee comes to spring training healthy and motivated to earn the starting job at second.
-
There are some really good first baseman available in free agency, but we know that's not happening. There are several interesting trade options though like Mount Castle, Hoskins and a few others. If twins are going to compete for real, they need to bring someone in. Otherwise, with no money to spend, I could see them using this year to debut a lot of young guys and evaluate the talent for next year and beyond. Not what you want to be doing while Buxton, Correa and Lopez are all in their primes. This is when the team should go for it, I just think they lack the motivation to do it at this point. I expect Miranda to be our starter with Severino and maybe Keaschal and Julien as backups. Maybe they go on a spending spree and sign Santana for one more year at five mil lol
-
Twins need to be more athletic and healthy period. We have way too many big, slow, defensively limited starters. Injecting some speed and energy into this team should be a priority.

I wish Jeni and and Rodriguez would be playing to make up the at bats they missed this year. I guess the team wants them to heal up and be completely healthy for spring training, which makes sense to me too. I wonder if Rosario could make his debut late in 2025?

Carlos Santana Wins First Gold Glove Award
LambchoP replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Well deserved, he saved a lot of runs and extra base hits for our players. Twins need to get A-healthier and B-better at defense. Santana helps with both, if we can get him cheap I say go for another year. I'd rather they try to upgrade the lineup by signing a power hitting first baseman like Alonzo, Goldschmidt or Walker, but we know it's not happening. Santana may be the best we could hope for.- 19 replies

Willi Castro is the key to 2025 Roster Construction
LambchoP commented on Brett's blog entry in Brett Turnquist
Twins need an everyday first baseman, a backup center fielder and a lefty reliever. A veteran starter would really help too. The only way we get any of these is if we can dump Vasquez, Paddack and maybe Castro's salary. That, plus possibly trading away some prospects. My guess is they do their best to dump salary but only succeed in getting rid of maybe one guy and decide to rely on unproven young and cheap prospects. -
Minnesota Twins Option Dilemma: Jorge Alcalá
LambchoP replied to Matthew Lenz's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Alcala was one of our best relievers for most of the season. If 1.5 mil is a deal breaker for that type of value, what kind of pen do they expect to have? He's about as cheap as you can get a good pitcher for, he just needs to be used correctly and not left out there for 2-3 innings. He's a high leverage, max effort one inning set up man. Not a multi inning long reliever. -
Trading any of these guys, especially the pitchers, would just create new holes to fill. I think Vasquez, Paddack, Castro and Larnach could be more realistic trade candidates.

Nobody Wins: The Jorge Polanco Trade
LambchoP replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Looks like Polanco is done for. Maybe he bounces back with a rebuild team, but his defense has plummeted with the knee Injuries. If Topa pitches we'll this year, and if Gonzalez and Bowen ever amount to anything, or if we can get something decent in a trade for them, I'd say we won the trade.- 66 replies

My guess is, with our payroll mess, we aren't signing any impact players to fill holes. First base will probably be some combo of Miranda and Severino. Although I think Lewis at first and Miranda at 3rd would be better defensively. 2nd base will probably be Julien and Castro to start the year with Lee and maybe Eeles taking over eventually. I'm a bit worried about our OF. When Buck goes down, we really don't have anyone solid. Martin and Keirsey Jr? Rodriguez and Rosario won't be ready for awhile. Maybe they try Mccusker? He's another big slow power hitter. Our defense is really going to suffer out there. I think we'll be seeing lots of young guys and prospects get a chance this year. It will probably hurt our offense overall to have so few everyday players and instead have a different lineup and defensive alignment every day

Twins need a first baseman and a fourth outfielder who can play CF as Buxton insurance. Someone needs to win the second base job between Julien and Lee. We could use a veteran SP. I don't think Festa is quite ready, but he'd be great as a first man up injury replacement. Bullpen also needs at least one solid lefty. Aroldis Chapman shouldn't be too expensive should he?
-
I'm thinking if the Twins can dump Vasquezs' entire salary by attaching a prospect to him, and then sign a young, cheap defensive minded catcher, they could use the money saved to start looking for a first baseman. Find a way to dump Paddack as well and all of a sudden they have 17 million to put towards a solid hitter. Someone like Walker, Goldschmidt or Hoskins could really help this lineup.

Offseason Status Update: The Long Winter Begins
LambchoP replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm expecting a pretty boring, bargain bin type off-season. They do need a first baseman, they need to figure out who is going to start at second base, we need a backup center fielder/4rth outfielder, we could use a veteran starter and we need 2 or 3 relief pitchers, at least one of them being a lefty. All of this with zero money to spend. Lol, good luck. My guess is we go into the season relying on lots of rookies and a few prospects that will be called up and relyed upon way sooner than they are ready for- 72 replies

I think Julien needs to stay in the minors, maybe back to single A to re-work his swing. Needs to learn a position and learn it right before he should ever be in the majors again. I think a healthy Lee will be fine. He looked great at 3rd and decent at 2nd. It does worry me that he's so slow, but you could say that about most of our team.

The only thing the Twins can learn from this years world series is that unless you're a rich team, you've got no chance. Look at the final four teams. Except for CLE (who never had a chance) the other three teams of NYT, NYM and LAD were the three highest payrolls in baseball. The Dodgers entire lineup was MVPs and all stars. They have single players that are being paid more money than ENTIRE MLB teams! How is a small to mid market team supposed to compete with that? With the construction of these "super teams" the last few years with record breaking payrolls, I'm guessing we're going to see the same 3-5 teams in the championships every year, which is not good for the sport. They will never institute a payroll cap, but they need to find some way to make the game somewhat fair .

I think one of the teams priorities needs to be getting faster and more athletic, and improving our terrible defense. We have so many so called "bat first" guys who are slow, have little range and no TRUE defensive home, since Rocco wants everyone to be a super utility player now. Losing Farmer and especially Margot will help, but we'll be taking a huge defensive hit at first base in losing Santana and probably replacing him with Miranda, Severino or Keaschal. It'd be great to sign Christian Walker or even Goldschmidt to something like a two year deal, but we all know ownership is not adding to our roster this year.

Emmanuel Rodriguez Is Coming In Hot
LambchoP replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
My guess is Emma starts at AAA and the Twins roll with Martin or Keirsey Jr as the 4rth OF, at least until Rodriguez and/or Rosario are ready for a full-time role. The Twins' future OF looks bright. Rodriguez, Jenkins, Rosario. Few more possibilities in Mccusker, Eeles, Gonzalez. Not to mention Wallner. Once one or two more outfielders prove themselves healthy and ready, I could see a Larnach trade. Too many lefty bats. -
Since he's our major league coach, he will probably have very little impact on Jenkins development. What I'm hoping for is that he can figure out what went wrong with so many of our everyday players at the plate last year. If he can get Julien, Lewis and Lee hitting up to their potent again, it would be huge. I think Nelly Cruz would be an amazing assistant hitting coach. He already has the nap room at Target Field!
