  1. You can never have too much pitching. Twins will need depth as injuries pile up. If we can trade him for any kind of pitching prospects and or salary relief, we need to use that money on pitching anyways. He's probably more valuable to us in the bullpen than a starter, but 7.5 million is too much to pay for a reliever.
  2. Sure, Rocco wasn't given much to work with this year, but it sure did not seem like he got the best out of the guys we had. If almost the whole team slumps for that long and has career worst marks in certain categories, some of that has to fall on the coaching.
  3. I think if they can get anything back for him in a trade that would truly help us this year then go for it. Otherwise, IF he is actually healthy, give him one more chance to prove he can hit enough to be an everyday player. It would really hurt to release him for nothing and then he instantly turns into another Brent Rooker. We're not signing a new first baseman, so he just has to hit as well or better than Miranda and Julien, maybe Severino in order to have at least a platoon first baseman job. I'd say maybe he could do, but Rocco doesn't use an everyday DH so he'll need to be able to play the field most days.
  4. I think Castro could be traded since they can replace his utility status with a cheaper Austin Martin. Kiriloff I think is done for,but they might give him one last chance this year if he's healthy. Duran and Topa are no trainers, we need all the pitching we can get.
  5. SP depth will always be needed. We've got a good starting rotation with Lopez, Ober, Ryan, SWR and Festa. But then we get a little thin with starters who would be ready to pitch in the bigs. First up will probably be Mathews, who needs more time in St Paul. Then Morris. After that we're looking at the likes of Dobnak and Bouschly until Cory Lewis, Raya and Culpeper are ready, which is probably still a ways off. This is why I think if we trade Paddack we should try for a veteran innings eater for the rotation. Guys go down and if we lose any of Lopez Ryan or Ober for any length of time, we'd be screwed. Our pen needs reinforcement too, especially a couple lefties.
  6. Even though Festa needs to work on his command and be more efficient to go deeper than 4 or 5 innings, I'm guessing he'll be our number 5 starter. Mathews will be a solid pitcher for us when he's ready, but he's not there yet. He was totally rushed this year due to injuries. The guy started in A ball! He only had a couple AAA starts and they didn't go well. He should start in St Paul and work on his changeup and anything else the coaches think. Hopefully he'll pitch his way to the majors at some point, hopefully not until he's ready.
  7. All depends on the hitter he will be. First half of 24 or the minor league hitter of the year in 22? Or second half 24? Totally different players. Maybe some of the struggles can be attributed to injury so maybe if he's fully healthy he can put together a full productive year. He's out of options so this is his last chance. Either way, with our budget I expect he's our starting first baseman, maybe platoon with Julien if he learns to hit again too. Maybe give the switch hitting, power bat of Severino a look at first at some point? It'd be nice if we could sign a true hr hitting threat long term to man first base but that's nothing more than a pipe dream. There will be no star type players brought in as long as Correa and Buck are taking up most of the teams payroll.
  8. I'm guessing we see more of the same this off-season. They say they're not going to CUT payroll, but with all the raises in arbitration everyone is getting, it will basically leave our payroll in the same place after dumping guys like Kepler, Margot, Farmer and Theilbar. There will be nothing left over to sign new players and ownership will just play up the "all the young talent coming up" card. Trying to convince us fans we don't need to sign any new players. Sad, really sad this team was in a great place coming off the playoff win in 23 :(
  9. I still think our best infield alignment is Lee at 2nd, Correa at SS and Lewis at 3rd. Lee is backup SS and 3rd. Miranda can back up 3rd. Keirsey should be protected this year, as we'll always need a real center fielder to split time with Buck. Martin should be depth/I jury insurance. The other guys don't inspire much confidence yet.
  10. You always here about these guys who have been part time players for years, and then a new team picks them up, gives them an everyday job and boom, all-star season. Aside from Santana and Castro, I don't think we had one player that I would call a full-time everyday player. No routine,no stability. Not knowing if you'll be playing day to day, or where you'll be playing or where in the lineup you'll be hitting, this has to make it so much harder on all these young guys coming up. Maybe if they let them play one position everyday, and hit in the same lineup spot everyday, without pinch hitting and subbing guys out every other inning, our guys might actually find some consistency and success. Just my two cents...
  11. None of these guys will impact the big league club next year. If everyone is healthy we should have a decent relief group, as long as ownership can fill it out with some capable arms, especially a couple lefties.
  12. Everyone wanted the team to go out and sign Correa when it happened. Is he overpriced, probably. And it is going to make roster construction that much harder because of his huge salary taking up a lot of the payroll. My guess is, the team will need to rely on our minor league guys for reinforcements and starters, as long as we're paying Correa this kind of money. We need a first baseman, it'll probably be Severino, Miranda, Kiriloff. We need a second baseman, it'll be Lee, Julien, Eeles or Keaschal. Need a center fielder to split time with Buck, it'll be Keirsey, Mccusker and eventually Rodriguez and Jenkins. As for pitching, we've already seen the starters we have to work with, whether our rookies are ready or not. Bullpen will be filled in with more minor league signings and league minimum salary cast offs, just like this year. It's sad too, because with just a few more legit pitchers, this could be a real good team.
  13. I understand the move after breaking the K record last year and then this September's collapse. It seems they were looking for someone to fire just to say " see, we did something, we're holding someone accountable." I think there are others who probably deserve to get canned much more, but it won't happen. Bring in someone like Maure as a hitting coach. Someone who actually has had success with a bat.... hopeful thinking :)
  14. I'm guessing it'll just be more of the same next year. I'm one of the few lucky ones as I live out of state and get to watch all the games on MLB.tv for free, since T Mobile gives away MLB.tv for free each year. Thing is, if ownership never improves the team, and we'll never be a legit contender, do I even care enough to watch them, even for free?
  15. Rocco needs to learn to read the flow of the game a little better and not just always stick to his by the numbers plan no matter how the game is going. At least he won't be able to pinch hit Margot anymore :)
  16. Hopefully we get debuts from Eeles, Mccusker and Keaschal this year, but because they force their way into a roster spot with performance, not because of a need due to injuries....maybe Mccusker or Keirsey win the Buxton backup job. I'd say the second base job is wide open for Lee, Julien Eeles or Keaschal, although I'm guessing they go with Lee or Julien to start the year based on experience.
  17. I'm a bit worried about next year. Pitching wise we could really use a veteran starter and a couple arms in the pen, especially a lefty or two. Offensively, they need to change up some things. We're going to need a real first baseman, and I don't feel confident about any of our second base options right now. We're also going to need a true center fielder to split time with Buxton. That's a lot of needs with no money to do it. Maybe they try to trade Paddack and Vasquez for salary relief? They'd have to include some prospects in order to get any team to take these guys. I think Correa's 37 million a year is really crippling our options, but you need a guy like that to lead a young team like ours. Just think he's a bit overpaid, he's probably worth around 20 million a year, not double that....
  18. I think Jax probably could start again, but losing him or Sands as a reliever would seriously cripple our bullpen.
  19. Correa looked great when healthy this year. The .300 average was nice to see, but I wonder if the higher avg came at the expense of power. For Correa to be worth almost 40 million a year to a team that's pinching pennies, he's going to have to hit 20+ home runs, and even more important, drive in way more runs. Same goes for Buxton and Lewis. When is the last time we had a true power hitter that hit 30 or more homers and hit 100+ RBIs? Nelson Cruz? Would be nice if we could add a true power threat to our lineup like Alonzo to play first base. That would really lengthen the lineup, but it'll never happen while Correa and Buxton are taking up 1/3 of the team payroll.
  20. I'd love it if they could trade Paddack along with something else to get a veteran SP. Lopez, Ryan, Ober, Free Agent, and SWR is a decent starting 5, with decent depth in AAA with Festa, Mathews and Morris. I really do think we need a veteran starter who can eat innings, because Festa and Mathews seem like they need at least another half season in the minors to iron out a few things....
  21. Pretty concerning pattern with a lot of these guys. Long stretches of mvp type production followed by prolonged slumps of DFA type numbers. Where's the consistency and what is the answer to try and find it? Hopefully some of our AAA prospects like Eeles, Mccusker, Lee and Keaschal pan out, because it sure sounds like we're not going to free agent sign our way out of this mess....
  22. Sorry, I really like Buck and love watching him, but I don't think he's proved anyone wrong. He still missed almost half the season, didn't hit even 20 home runs, and with his elite speed he doesn't even steal bases. If he can keep playing 100+ games, then he's worth the 15 million per season. But, since he is Mr Glass, the team will Always need a reliable backup center fielder. Not Castro or Martin, a real center fielder.
  23. That's why I said Paddack AND Varland in the bullpen. They gave him more than enough chances to start and it just didn't work out. Hopefully he can put together a solid season if he sticks to one inning outing where he can just let it fly. I'm guessing they will try to trade Paddack for salary relief, but if we are stuck with him I hope he doesn't take up a rotation spot. He'll either be on the IL or pitching in long relief due to inconsistent performance.
  24. I do think he needs another out pitch, and has to find a way to be more efficient and go deeper into games. However, he really saved our rotation this year and I think he can become a stable back of the rotation starter for a lot of years. I hope next years rotation will look something like this . Lopez, Ober, Ryan SWR and Free Agent (Eovaldi, Mannae, Flaherty, Kikuchi Paddack in the pen with Varland. Festa and Mathews first up in AAA. I highly doubt we spend on a starter though, so I guess we'll roll with Festa or Paddack as our fifth starter, which doesn't leave much experienced depth for injury insurance.
  25. I said this last week, but there NEEDS to be some kind of accountability for this collapse, starting with Rocco. His idiotic in game decisions, the lack of fire or effort from the team, and no lack of urgency despite what he always says. We need a manager that holds players accountable and actually has some baseball IQ and feel for the game. A new hitting coach is long overdue too I think. Wise, we need a first baseman, an outfielder or two, a starting pitcher and a few relief arms, but I doubt we grab anyone other than waiver wire, minor league scrap heap players as we always do and then call the off-season a success:(
