  1. I don’t think there will be a true closer. Baldelli will use the best relievers on the heart of the order rather than by what inning it is. As a 3 run lead gets the last pitcher a save there might be quite a few pitchers with saves. Sands as a long reliever could lead the team in saves.
  2. Joe Ryan should then fit as a young starter. When the season is done, if Ober, SWR and Varland are options 6,7,and 8 combined they will likely have more starts than Maeda or Gray. The gamble the FO took is on winning. If the team wins resigning Lopez and Mahle will not be a problem. A pennant winning team should draw well enough to cover their salaries unless they get next to nothing from the cable tv deals blowing up. I don’t think anyone saw that coming this soon. Gray’s contract should not be onerous, either given his age and history. We shall see how the year goes
  3. In a binary world 26,26, and 27 are not old. Therefore they are young. First 2 likely reinforcements are 26 and 24.
  4. Positive spring training numbers are good, but really indicative of nothing. It is not like teams run out even half a roster for the whole game. Derek Rodriguez hasn’t allowed an earned run. Nobody is saying he needs to be on the roster.
  5. I could be wrong but it doesn’t seem like the starters have pitched many innings this spring. They may need another long reliever to go with Sands at the start of the season. If there are a lot of 4 inning starts to the season the bullpen might be overused by May. Once the starters get going it should be less of a problem.
  6. Spring training games against AAA and AA batter for Graterol. Not numbers to get overly excited about. Context is important
  7. Yup, Cleveland did well in trades. The kicker is that to get many of those players they gave up Lindor,, Carrasco, Kluber and Clevinger. All world player, once an ACE pitcher, Ace pitcher at the time of the trade, Ace pitcher at the time of the trade. I do believe they got squat for Bauer. Now it was good timing on the pitchers, but one never knows. Notice that none of the players traded were 2B. They were all higher value positions.than a 2B or a relief pitcher
  8. Brandon Lowe’s contract says you are wrong Kevin Keirmaier’s contract says you are wrong Wander Franco also has a long contract Longoria was traded when it was decline time, not the expense of a good player
  9. Tyler White is making a good impression by hitting against AAA pitchers
  10. Lopez is not a free agent after this year and the subject was the pending free agents. the numbers you suggest are on the low end of what was handed out last year. There would no reason for them to want to sign a contract now at those numbers unless in their short time the families decided they like Minnesota. You betcha that would work
  11. The extension would not be overly team friendly deals. They also should not be overpays. If the team can figure out that number there will be extensions. Around 4/70 for Mahle, 3/60 if Gray is having a good year
  12. When the catching coach wasn’t any good at throwing out runners how is Jeffers going to learn? Steinbach was a Ryan guy so he is not around anymore. When Turner was under his direction he was a fine defensive catcher
  13. I would think with statcast they could come up with if the stolen base is on the pitcher or catcher. If the runner has a reasonably good jump no infielder could handle the 985 mph throw the catcher would have to make
  14. Results: There were 6135 professional baseball players who completed the survey (66% response rate). The prevalence of UCL reconstruction in all MLB and MiLB players was 13% (637/4928), while the prevalence in DSL players was 2% (20/1207) (P < .001). The prevalence in all MLB and MiLB players (13%) and pitchers (20%) both increased significantly from 2012 (P < .001). MLB pitchers reported a higher prevalence of UCL reconstruction than did MiLB pitchers (26% vs 19%, respectively; P < .001). In 2018, the prevalence of UCL reconstruction has increased significantly in MiLB pitchers (19% vs 15%, respectively; P < .001) and pitchers aged 21 to 30 years (22% vs 17%, respectively; P < .001) compared with 2012. Additionally, United States–born pitchers were more likely to have undergone UCL reconstruction compared with Latin America–born pitchers (23% vs 13%, respectively; P < .001). Conclusion: The prevalence of UCL reconstruction has increased significantly in professional baseball players over the past 6 years from 10% to 13%. Ultimately, the prevalence of UCL reconstruction has increased most significantly since 2012 in MiLB pitchers, pitchers aged 21 to 30 years, and pitchers born in the United States. This is from NIH from 2018 Take from it what you will
  15. The Twins used 13 outfielders last year. Many proved to not be worthy of a roster spot. There shouldn’t be a problem adding a depth piece that is far better than Beckham, Cave,, Celestine, or Hamilton. Contreras did not fare well at the major league level, either. The front office has come to realize outs above average is important
  16. Balazovic is on the 40 man. A lot of the prospects on the 40 man get cut early in case of injury do the service clock doesn’t start ticking
  17. If they resign Wheeler that 38 is back on the books
  18. A few years back I had a coworker on TD. Got in trouble for flame bait His brother got thrown off for sounding like him. Sometimes you have to tone it down
  19. DeGrom debuted at almost age 26. Now or never? I would really think that there was better baseball sense than that from the writers . Is TD becoming clickbait?
  20. Unicorns Bigfoot Nuclear fusion for power Effective long reliever that pitches multiple innings multiple times a week all do not exist. Short relief is max effort in short burst. With a few outliers you will find they pitch up to 70 to 80 innings but 60 innings year in and year out seems like a better limit Long relief would be someone that needs a starters repertoire or a reliever that can minimize pitches thrown. The latter case would likely be good enough to be in the back end of the bullpen. That leaves someone who could be starting but maybe should only be going through a lineup once. That is usually called your fifth starter.
  21. Mark Guthrie pitched 75 innings in 1992. That is not really much difference than a short reliever pitches. He made 58 appearance so it was not like he was a long reliever very often
