  1. BABIP is luck is one of those fallacies people have said so many times people believe it. LD% correlates highly with a high BABIP. FB% and IFFB is a negative correlation . Speed is a contributing factor. All the information is out there. BABIP for pitchers is normalized at about 1000 innings. Of course than they get injured and there is a new normal
  2. 50% reach their 50th percentile projection providing they have met a certain threshold of innings or AB. Never mind that innings and AB were also projected. So if a position player plays manages to play a half of a season, they count in looking at accuracy, but otherwise no. I suppose being right half the time when things work out well enough it is a good system. I wouldn’t use it for anything other than entertainment
  3. Couldn’t ask for a better way to start your career than a September call up to face the Whites Sox, Angels, Athletics and Royals. Forever on his baseball card will be a year of impressive stats. For his finer work, Detroit sent him to the minors after his last start
  4. In theory you need a 6/7/8 starter in AAA for the major league team. There also needs to be a AAAA disaster starter. That leaves 2 development slots open Festa and SWR would be 6/7 . Dobnak is the AAAA stater. Ohl might be your development starter. They really don’t have anyone else. That leaves 2 holes
  5. Odorizzi spent last year on the dl after shoulder debridement. A signing of him would probably mean a start on the minor league dl as he builds back up. Is the team magnanimous enough for his short term of service to pay him to rehab at minor league pay, with an opt out? Brad Keller. Ground ball pitcher. Not the usual Falvey pitcher. He has quite a few years in a row as a back end starter. His ceiling is back end starter. Surely if your hope to resurrect someone’s career, let it at least be someone with a higher ceiling Pomeranz by all means sign him he was effective when healthy. Last healthy was 6 years ago. Players bounce back all the time. Look at Buxton
  6. It is disheartening that over the age of 30 relievers who have spent parts of 7-8 years at the major league level that still have years of arbitration eligibility left go on to have a career year after have determined they would not be useful for your bullpen, Can’t wait for the reaction if Pagan has a career year fo the Reds
  7. The hyperbole starts early with this one. There are probably 10 teams who are sure their top 9 players are better than the listed 9 Twins. Then there are 9 teams who think their top 9 are better, then there is Oakland who would go “yeah, but we don’t have that king of money
  8. I have worked with big egos. Anybody who has working in some of the places I have worked had huge egos. To deals with what you must deal with in healthcare one must have a strong constitution I did not describe people with huge egos. I have not worked in some back office. Out of civility, I will leave it at that Cobb went to the World Series his first 3 yeas and lost. The next 25 years not there. Josh Donaldson never there. Bauer went to the World Series with Cleveland. They were there due to Carasco, Clevinger and Kluber. Bauer hasn’t been back since, Bonds played in 1 WS in 22 years. Ricky Henderson played in one more World Series game than teams he played for.
  9. There was a player years ago from rural Minnesota who played in New York briefly I can’t remember his name but he said something about it being a different world. Living in a large city versus living in a city where you can easily escape the city can mean a lot to some. The culture in New York wasn’t to the liking of some people I knew who had to travel to the city
  10. I work in a team environment. It really sucks to be stuck with the non team player, narcissistic, biting personality. Especially when they know how to suck up.
  11. Gallo hit well before going to the Ya knees. He did not do that with the Yankees he is not the first player nor the last player to stink for the Yankees after playing well elsewhere. Sony Gray, Carl Pavano recovered to some success. Given Gallo isn’t old, if he returned to the .800-.850 range with his OPS he woul have been a steal. Risk/reward
  12. The fallacy that will never die is that a player would have become for the original team what they became for the next team.
  13. In most threads after 13-14 posts into the thread one does wonder if anyone read the article beyond the title
  14. Half of what gold caretaker is to be ad free. The promise a more in depth article. Parker is the analytics techie guy. I am not sure who else writes “in depth” articles. I wouldn’t hazard a guess unless maybe Seth is writing up prospects
  15. Holliday has a similar minor league trajectory as Delmon Young, Rocco Baldelli and Mike Trout. Which one is he going o be? Or is the .736 OPS at AAA indicative of his talent? If Baltimore thought that Raya and Soto were going to be top of the order pitchers and they could get them for Holliday he would be gone in 60 seconds. When they looked at careers, the success rate of the top 10 was around 50%. And it went down from there IIRC their definition of success was 5 or 10 career war. The bar was low
  16. That is why prospect lists are for entertainment purposes only. The ranking means nothing
  17. Last year 32 different reliever were used in St Paul. They have to keep trying to find someone viable
  18. Danny Santana used speed to beat out infield hits. That was easily defended. His regression should have been anticipated.
  19. Judging by the values of free agents posted I don’t think anybody should be worried about them signing another Bundy or Hill type. No, for the price they would want to spend the team would get much worse. Trade a 10 million contract of a 2-3 war player to sign a pitcher at the about 10 million level is a possibility. Would a recycled Paxton be any different than Bundy? Look for a trade.
  20. So basically you do not know if there is a successful 2 swing approach that is any different from how a batter normally swings the bat. There should be some sort of magical thing that works
  21. But, if you don’t walk much you still may be just unsuccessful at working the count
  22. What is the successful outcome rate with a”2 strike approach” versus a not 2 strike approach? Statistical, not opinion.
  23. ‘Twas the week before Christmas’s in the Twin’s house a frontline starter was need but not this louse
