And if not, did anyone notice that our hitters only scored one run?

You mean the guy that would have had the game-winning RBI in the first inning, but his 2-out single to RF was hit TOO HARD to score Kirilloff from second? That guy? The guy whose hit was one of only 6 for the entire club? What was it about Kepler’s performance tonight that you didn’t like?

I’m starting to question who the best players are on this team. Or at least, who the leaders are. When the changing of the guard happens, it’s not necessarily a ‘good’ thing (in terms of winning)…but it always feels fresh/new/hopeful/exciting. Rarely do you get to see it happen in the middle of a season while competing for the post season. Thanks, ALC.

Edouard Julien Has a Blueprint to Work On
jkcarew replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don’t think you can teach hands. And he’s not marginal defensively. He MAY hit at a 1B/DH level though. That’s the only path I see to a long-ish Twins career, even if Polanco leaves. -
But again it’s not as much the result as the process. Cavaco was a complete lottery ticket from the get-go…at 13th overall. But maybe it’s just me (wouldn’t be the first time)😉

All fair. But there’s a difference between missing on a consensus (or within shouting distance of consensus) player, and having the player not work out… …and thinking you know something nobody else knows and reaching,..and having that player fail from day one. One is going to garner more criticism than the other. It comes with the territory.

It's Okay to be Impressed by the Twins
jkcarew replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I never thought this team was likely to have an above average offense. Relying on too many veterans to improve on recent results and young guys to immediately make “the next step”” They’ve been a little worse than I expected. Pitching has been a little better than I expected….significantly better for the most part. Always something/someone to be impressed with. I don’t know where things go from here, but I continue to feel that a team with truly good starting pitching (1-3), is a more ‘serious’ post season team than what the club has presented in recent past, regardless of the offense. If we can get there.- 39 replies

Cavaco was a horrendous reach at the time. Multiple draft analysts (and members of this community) said he was a reach in real time. He’s now a first baseman (that has never been able to hit)…a clear indication that the Twins are throwing in the towel. The rest of 2019 looks pretty good. A little bit of…“other than that, Mrs Lincoln, how did you like the play?”

Yeah, it’s still more about Mahle than it is about what we gave up, IMO. Time and CES could change my opinion. Right now the trade looks better if Miranda had been one of the highly-regarded right-handed infield bats we had given up…that’s true. But that too could change.

In general, Twins hitting prospects at A+ are actually YOUNGER than those at A. This is skewing perceptions based on stats alone.

This. Wallner is K’ing at a 37% clip in AAA playing full time. There’s about a 100% chance that at least one of Gallo and Kepler won’t be here next year (to say nothing of 2nd-half injuries this season). If he keeps working/improving, he’s going to get his chance.

Good on Rocco for staying with Duran in the 10th. You win the game in hand, and take your chances tomorrow. Every time. We heard day one from multiple sources inside and outside the organization that Lewis had the “it” factor. The question has been does he have enough talent (hitting) to make it matter at the major league level. Knocking on every bit of wood I can find that he stays healthy and gets to prove himself.

Twins 26/40-man Roster Moves/Transactions Thread - 2023
jkcarew replied to Danchat's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Good question. Does Celestino have options? -
The spark may be somewhere in this article. Or, it might not be. The good news is that it looks almost assured that the ALC will give the Twins a good amount of time to find it. And, if the pitching holds up, even a decently functioning offense gives the club a chance in a playoff series. My formula is Buxton in CF (70%), Correa coming around, a good platoon at DH (Buxton vs lefties, Julien righties?) and Lewis being good, a good addition to the bullpen at the deadline…and health. That’s probably too many things to be likely. The exact catalyst, I don’t know. We’ll see.

I think AAA is more about ‘taxi-squad’ than development. The young guys at AAA tend to be the ones deemed ‘ready’, but haven’t cracked the starting lineup. My guess is Lee will be at AA all season. Don’t really have anyone ‘tearing it up’ at AA…Severino maybe/kinda? FWIW, I saw they did put Lewis at SS at least once.

Tip of the hat to Rocco who tried something different with the bullpen. I wouldn’t say that it necessarily ‘worked’…but IMO he needed to try something different. At the end of the day, his best reliever pitched a scoreless inning in a game the club won by two runs. Also, he got Stewart out there before it was too late.

You would have hated Harmon Killebrew. Gio Urshella doesn’t make the team better. He might make it funner to watch for some here. More wins? No.

What’s Wrong with Griffin Jax?
jkcarew replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The data matches the observation. He isn’t putting batters away with the sweeper…they’re fouling it off eventually walking or putting something in play. And if/when he finally gives in…hard contact. -
We’re bad offensively, but we’re not missing Gio Urshella and his 86 OPS+.

The Twins lead the league…or close…with 12 blown saves. Duran has ONE of those. That speaks for itself…as does the fact that almost every regular member of the bullpen has pitched more than Duran.

Blue Jays were 2-8 in their last ten…not exactly rolling. The pinch hitting for Kirilloff (while he’s been hitting fine and showing power, no less) with the likes of Solano and now Castro…and early in games as well…Is this not inexcusable? Or just embarrassing? Or is it just me?
