It was always going to be a short start for Lopez. Not going to have anyone max out on a long and/or stressful start with next appearance in playoffs. Means nothing.

Did my own research. 2nd-half K’s… Batters: 684 (10.5 per game) Pitchers: 607 (9.3 per game) Honestly, we’re golden if that discrepancy hold up…or even almost holds up, in the playoffs.

It’s always matchups in the playoffs. It’s hard/impossible to win with big discrepancies…if the opponent K’s 6 times and you are K’ing 14 times. As long as it’s not significantly one-sided, I think the Twins are fine. And that’s a reasonable expectation given the pitching and the second half offensive showing. We’ll see. I’d like to know how many times the Twins batters K’d fewer (or same) times than the opposition in the second half? Close to 50%? Or what the aggregate difference was?

Sounds like the Astros have inflicted some emotional and psychological scars on our community. But they’ve been just ‘good’, not great, all season, and have been DREADFUL down the stretch. I’m not backing away from a team that just got swept at HOME by the Royals…in games they NEEDED to win. I don’t know what to predict…but for the first time since the streak began, they’re actually close, if not on par with the opposition they’ll see in the first round. This is a prerequisite for success, IMO…despite the common refrain of “anything can happen”. It’s not about the regular season records. It’s about who you have, how they’ve been playing, and pitching match-ups. I like the Twins to do SOMETHING here, more than I liked them with 100 wins in 2019…much more, because of the above.

Twins Minor League Report (9/24): Saints Come Marching In
jkcarew replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Candidates, yes. Not necessarily likely in some cases. I mean…both Andrew Stevenson and Luplow are on the active roster currently. IL games can be played as well. I’m sure if they think Buxton is ‘ready’ (whatever that means), they won’t spend any time gnashing their teeth over the likes of Luplow or Stevenson.- 8 replies

Twins Minor League Report (9/24): Saints Come Marching In
jkcarew replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
That’s why I said IF THEY ARE PLANNING ON HAVING ANY OF THEM ON THE ROSTER… If they want Stewart, then he should pitch some with the Twins…if they want Buxton, he should be getting real PA’s.- 8 replies

Twins Minor League Report (9/24): Saints Come Marching In
jkcarew replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I would hope if they are planning on any of those guys being on the roster for the opening series, that they would be rehabbing by playing games with the Twins. No reason not to.- 8 replies

Game Thread: Twins (Lopez) v Angels (Daniel), 9/22/23 @ 7:10 CT

It had to be a little ugly, right? It just had to be…it’s been that type of year in the ALC. -

Don’t think this is a good idea. When Chief played the mound was still only 50 feet from home plate. -
Did I say they were SO much better? AT THAT POINT in their careers, the Twins core was at least as good as the Tigers. That’s my point. It didn’t matter that they didn’t have playoff experience…they had very good players. Detroit was the team that had been ‘hot’ and was about to face reality…not just in the 87 series, but for the years ahead. Evans was never the same, and he was historically bad in the series. They started Doyle Alexander…the definition of a “got hot” guy if ever there was one. He was bludgeoned (twice). We started the guy who would win the Cy Young the following year. Gibson was already a shadow of his former self. That Tigers group won 88 games the next year…the Twins won 91, and went 11-1 against Detroit doing it. 11-1. The year after that the Tigers lost 103 games. They were done. The Twins had better players in the 87 series, they just hadn’t proven they knew how to win yet.

Yes, they may be closer to the ‘84 stage than the ‘87 stage. That’s why I’m not suggesting a WS championship this year as a litmus test. We’ll see. And FWIW, Detroit’s #3 was Walt Terrell.

I’ll take good players over experience every day. The 87 Twins had no postseason experience (Blyleven, Don Baylor off the bench). But what they had was a BUNCH of really good players that nobody yet knew were really good. It was a mismatch on 1987 paper, but if we were to re-handicap the Detroit series today, after careers played out…not so much. Were Trammel, Gibson, Whitaker, old Darrel Evans, Morris and Alexander really much better than Gaetti, Pucket, Hrbek, Brunansky, Gagne, Viola, and old Blyleven? Not at all. That’s the hope. Not for a WS championship this year, but for some measure of success. How good are Lewis, Julian, Wallner, Duran, Jeffers, Ryan? Maybe…collectively, they’re better than we think.

One would seem to provide more upside (Buxton)…but Gallo provides way more flexibility in a bench role. Question is…how much flexibility do you need in a 3-game series? I imagine in this scenario Gallo would be the replacement called up if any of the left-handed bats are injured…maybe any injury (other than pitcher/catcher).

Fair. Obviously, he brings more potential defensive value than Julien. On-field personality is also quite different, as well…to put it in understated terms…he has a lot of “flair”.

Byron Buxton's Playoff Role Might Be Big Bench Bat
jkcarew replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yes. And as Riverbrian points out above, Buxton can ‘rehab’ with the Twins at some point over the last 9 games (doesn’t need to be St Paul since the games don’t matter) to prove/disprove readiness for a role in the opening series. You can even replace an injured player during a series (pending commissioner approval).- 58 replies

Byron Buxton's Playoff Role Might Be Big Bench Bat
jkcarew replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yeah…the bench role seems like a big mistake, IMO. If he’s getting one PA a game in a big spot, I just see him flailing and chasing even more than normal, trying to do too much…not to mention how it constricts flexibility with the roster. I don’t think it would be the end of the world to DH him and have him, like 6th,7th,8th in the order behind someone like Wallner or Jeffers (or Kirilloff?) because I do think pitchers will consider Buxton a power threat ALMOST no matter how he’s swinging it, and the guy in front of him might see better pitches than otherwise. That’s where he would belong in the BO, regardless of DH or CF roles. Still don’t think it would be the best move, though…unless he can play CF.- 58 replies

Greene was fantastic…dominant. I think all of us as Twins fans should be able to appreciate how devastating that loss has to have been for the Reds and their fans. The shoe was on the other foot today. Many here seem excited about the possibility of a 2 seed. I can assure you the Twins management aren’t thinking 2 seed. We’ll see Correa and Lewis get extra rest. We’ll see Gray and Lopez skip starts, the back end of the bullpen will be used just enough to keep rust off… Etc etc. If a 2 seed happens (due to the soft schedule), it happens…but mainly exhibition games from here on out. I’m happy with the 3 seed…and their play in the 2nd half has made them worthy of a 3 seed, IMO…despite the terrible competition in the division.

Byron Buxton's Playoff Role Might Be Big Bench Bat
jkcarew replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
To me it’s pretty simple… If he can play in the field, you roster him. If he can’t, you don’t. He’s not a DH…and you can’t afford to bring a guy that can only PH. Meanwhile, he has a career OPS of 631 as a substitute, and 455 as a pinch hitter. So, it’s not like he has a track record of being good in those roles, either.- 58 replies

Not the way I read it. And I think the are ramifications for how modern athletes train. It’s debatable, but a legit topic, IMO. -

So you don’t think players get hurt more often/easier now? The statement was not that “they’re soft” or “really not injured”…simply that they seem to get hurt easier or more often on seemingly harmless plays. I don’t think it’s a ridiculous take at all.
