@jcrasnick #Astros announce they've claimed OF Alex Presley off waivers from #twins. Designated P Raul Valdes for assignment.

Kinda surprising, I thought they'd keep Presley as the 4th outfielder.

I woulda thought Houston would have claimed Diamond. I guess that means Bartlett is going to make the team as the back up center fielder? Or maybe Parm is gonna do it?

I'm surprised by this too.

On another waiver front (and because I don't want to start another thread), Diamond and Parmelee were also on waivers.

Diamond cleared. Haven't seen anything about Parmelee.

I'm really suprised they put Presley on waivers. Same with Parms, guess they are trying to get a lot of 40 man slots opened up for some reason?

Are they just abandoning the concept of OF defense completely this year? With a fly ball pitchign staff? I, um, don't understand this move. didn't they just trade for this guy?

Yeah, in the same trade that brought them Duke Welker.

In addition to Diamond, Chris Parmelee and Alex Presley also placed on waivers. All 3 waiver periods expire today, per source. #mntwins

I would guess this means that Parmelee also cleared.

And I would LIKE THE FOLLOWING from Nick Nelson a gazillion times:

Parmelee also on waivers. The Twins waived Presley and Parmelee to keep 34-year-old Jason Bartlett on the roster. That's freaking insane.

Wait ... Parms wasn't on waivers, was he? I hadn't heard that. Hadn't heard that Presley was either, for that matter.

And with Florimon questionable to start the season and likely going to extended ST because of his appendectomy, I guess Bartlett makes the team as a super-utility player, both backup to infield and CF?

From Berardino:

With those moves, it appears the final roster spot will go to either veteran super utility man Jason Bartlett or 30-year-old slugger Chris Colabello, the reigning International League Most Valuable Player.

Maybe there is still something else in the works.

Wetmore is speculating that they're close to a trade, which is the only way this makes sense to me. I mean who is our backup center fielder otherwise? Arcia?

EDIT: I see other people are speculating it would be Bartlett. I guess that's a little better.... maybe.

Gotta hope that is what is going on. Twitter world seems to think that very few OF will be available on waiver wire.

OTOH:

Toronto is supposedly shopping Colby Rasmus for starting pitching. Crossing my fingers.... Please?

This was my hope ... that there was something else in the works. Which it still could be. I read earlier that Florimon is likely not heading north (trying to find that again) so thought Bartlett would be on the team as a backup there. Wow ... not sure what to think right now. More questions keep popping up.

There's a rumor that Gardy's still peeved at Hicks and is planning on an outfield of Willingham, Kubel and Arcia - what defense!

I hope this means they're on the cusp of another move. Be it a waiver claim or a trade. If they did this to facilitate keeping Bartlett on the roster (and they plan to use him as the 4th OF) well...I...

(Unless of course, Florimon will be on the DL as I see some are speculating now. Then keeping Bartlett as Escobar's backup makes some sense).

Rasmus for Diamond. Seems like a fair trade.

Now where is that darn sarcasm emoticon...

Are there any rumblings still out there about the Sox moving Alejandro De Aza?

If Bartlett makes the team, his nickname has to be "Puntlett".

Ok, Ok, let's not get hysterical here. None of the three players in question--Parmelee, Presley, Bartlett--is good, so while choosing Bartlett over the other two is a mild surprise, it hardly qualifies as "insane". Get a grip.

I seem to remember the whole, no one to back up Hicks in CF thing not working out so hot last year. Hard to believe they're going to start another season with no real back up for Hicks, since I don't really consider Bartlett a CF backup. If there isn't a waiver wire claim or a trade made by us for someone who can play CF, I'm not really sure what to think. If Hicks struggles we end up with an OF of Willingham/Bartlett/Kubel and Arcia? That can't possibly be right, can it?

I'm about to turn 50, who is older and played baseball more recently, me, or Bartlett? I fail to see how this is consistent with a rebuilding strategy. But I'm sure the people that thought they should trade for him will be right next time.

Mastroianni is still stashed at Rochester, right?

I suppose that is some potential back-up should there not be anything else in the works.
