Arcia

I had pretty much expected the Twins would trade a bat and that Arcia would be called up.

As we know this did not happen but the question remains on what to do with Arcia. My initial instinct was to say call him up yesterday but thinking about it some more does anyone think there is some value in having him avoid the death march of the dog days of August and instead keep him on a winning team that is driving for the playoffs in Rochester?

He obviously misses the major league reps but he does gain some other aspects of development that could pay dividends in a couple of years.

To me it's absurd that Arcia is in AAA.

You can't adjust to MLB pitching in AAA, they don't pitch the same way.

He's ready to hit MLB pitching, he's shown that this year. He needs to be allowed to work through his slumps. Going down to AAA and crushing fastballs doesn't do a whole lot for his development, IMO.

We don't know Arcia's personality. We can only express uninformed opinions on this. I only know that whenever Arcia came to bat I paid extra attention. Before he was sent down he could only be described as dazed and confused.

Isn't that the growing pains of a rookie hitter?

The list of guys that come into the MLB and start hitting right away and never stop is very, very short.

Arcia is not, and should never been expected to be, on that list.

He should be working through that slump here, not in AAA.

His main problem was that he was getting breaking balls in fastball counts. How is he supposed to make that adjustment in AAA, where he is just going to get fastballs to feast on?

They don't even need to trade someone. Send Hicks down, move Cletus to CF, call up Arcia.

edit: Better yet, DFA Cletus, call up Arcia and Richardson.

Oh I agree, I was just thinking that movement was waiting until the trade deadline.

Like the first one better.

Vs. right-handed pitching, Hicks is the worst left-handed hitter in baseball as measured by OPS or wOBA. He's batted .171 since the ASB. He's not helping the team in any meaningful way, and despite the nice babip-fueled June, he's not really improving at this point. It's time for him to just go work on getting better at Rochester, and get ready to be a contributor next season and beyond.

So Arcia should work out his issues in the bigs but not aaron hicks? Hmmm....

Hicks was given a chance to work out his issues in the bigs. Arcia was not given that chance. He was sent down right away both times he started slumping.

Lets not get into Hicks. I hate every moment of him on the Twins.

Arcia is adjusting (hopefully). I'm not sure what their exact reasons have been for sending him down, but they have a plan. I doubt he'll be down much longer than he needs to be. This season is a learning year for him so bouncing back and forth a few times isn't going to hurt him. Next year will be a different story.

Probably not, but it may not help him either. Some adjustments simply cannot be made at AAA, the pitchers there are not capable of pitching you the same way they do in the MLB.

At some point you are going to have let a young hitter work through his slump at the MLB level, you can't just send him down right away every time he starts slumping.

Arcia has shown bad habits; I called him out for not running out ground balls before he got Sent down, and he's since been disciplined at AAA for that. That shows a lack of focus/professionalism. His glove is mediocre. He needs to work harder if he wants to be more than an average left-fielder.

Last year the Twins didn't promote Arcia as New Britain was in the playoff hunt. This year Arcia is helping Rochester into the playoffs. (seriously, stop laughing, Rochester is actually good this year) I don't think there should be any debate. Let him ride with Rochester the rest of the year and then let him join the Twins next year which will ensure the Twins make a playoff run. It's really in everyone's best interest, and this line of reasoning proves it.

You CAN argue with logic; but please don't.

Ok, the deadline is over, it is time to do what is right for all the guys on this team. Parmelee, Arcia, and Escobar have gotten some at-bats, they should all return to the Twins. Clete Thomas shouldn't be playing instead of either Arcia or Parmelee. Doug Bernier should be in the minor leagues. While I have said from the beginning of the season that Morneau should be gone by now--play him three or four times a week and see what Colabello and Parmelee can do. Doumit should also only play on occasion and as long as Doumit is around, there is no need for Herrmann. Perhaps someone will give the Twins something for one of their older players during the waiver period, but if not, they should sit. I am not totally opposed to Hicks being optioned. He is still below the Mendoza line and his numbers for July weren't good. Perhaps he can help Rochester win.

Outfielder @A (Ok, fine, it's Arcia): .257/.317/.408 in MLB .320/.430/.608 in AAA Rochester.

Outfielder A# (Surprise! It's Hicks!) I know, right !?!)

.194/.262/.344 in MLB .190/.261/.238 in AAA Rochester.

Welcome aboard, FNG. All due repect, but why would you even post that.... stuff?

"Hmmmm".

Yeah. Hmmmm.

Using stats is obviously the only way to decide development and ability.

And in addition to my implicit hatred of scouting, I'm also clearly against recycling and animal rights because I didn't put in a pitch for them either, right?

If you have some sort of actual thought about the subject of the thread, serve it up, Meat. If not, why are you posting in it?

I'm not sure why everyone thinks that Arcia is finished with the minors. He was promoted quickly through the minors and he does have some bad habits that are holding back his raw skill. But Cletus shouldn't be playing everyday...

Hicks has actually been halfway decent (if you factor in CF defense) in May, June, and July. Not great but not nearly as bad as some are making it sound.

Well, they do quantify results on the field nicely. Also, based on what I've seen, Arcia can hit and Hicks, at this point, could legitimately be pinch hit for by several national league pitchers.

I hope Arcia is a better defender than we saw earlier this year.

Our eyes confirm what BIS solutions found with his -8 defensive runs saved in 290 innings of LF. Thomas, on the other hand, has been very good in left field.

The Twins have a big left field and need a good defender in that spot. I would rather see a Thomas/Mastroianni platoon there the rest of this season.

Arcia has been playing mostly RF in AAA. I hope his arm is a plus in that spot to offset his range. The Twins don't need three guys that should only be a DH on the roster.

Speaking of arm in RF, how about that throw from Hermann last night. He didn't even look like it took much effort.

Jorgen, do you really want to see players who have no chance to be regulars take the playing time for the last third of the season? With Dozier injured, I have two players left that I'm following closely--Hicks and Plouffe--I know Mauer will be good, and the rest of the guys aren't part of the future. I am so disinterested I can't work up a good g. d. when somebody fails.

On the topic of Arcia's D, he looked pretty shaky either in left or right, but I think he has the skills to be an okay corner guy. I thought his arm looked good this spring.

Yeah, the defense would likely suffer but I think it's about developing the young bats at this point, defense be damned. Put Arcia and Parmelee in the middle infield for all I care, I just want to see these guys adjust to MLB pitchers. Thomas is a good story, but at this point he is taking away valuable evaluation time from guys who the Twins are going to need to make decisions on starting opening day 2014.

Is 5+ seasons in the minors before being promoted to the majors considered to be promoting quickly for most clubs?

Are you just being argumentative?

2 yrs of rk ball and 2 injury plagued years covering low A to AAA while being promoted to the majors at age 21. That is moving fast according to almost every organization.

We need to put Clete on wavers and hope that someone will take him off of our hands. Parm is a better hitter then Clete, Clete is better on D but Parm can platoon with Mastriani. Arcia will be the left fielder to replace Willingham at some point. Hicks will be just fine. He is getting better with each month, except the last 10 games or so, where he has had some bad at bats and some tough luck. Hicks is going to man center till Buxton does. People all over the country, I know I travel for work, rave about the young CF we have and how awesome he is and will be. Arcia is going to be great as well. He needs to be in the Majors and get consistent AB's. At least that is MHO.

If it was my call... Call up Arcia today... I like Clete he's OK but he's playing every day.

We are starved for power and Arcia has power and he is our future. I don't care how many 1B, Corner OF's we have when Willingham comes back.

Send down Bernier... Carroll can back up all 3 infield positions. We don't need a bunch of these guys right now.

And don't give Morneau the lions share of playing time at 1B... Play him but not every day... Let Colabello and Mauer play some first. Just so we can give Colabello and Arcia and Herrmann and Willingham some playing time going forward.

It's time to get creative and getting creative means playing players who will be here in 2014.

2B Dozier/Carroll

C Mauer/Herrmann/Doumit

1B Morneau/Colabello

LF Willingham/Herrmann/Thomas

RF Arcia/Herrmann

DH Doumit/Colabello/Willingham

3B Plouffe/Carroll

CF Hicks/Thomas

SS Florimon/Carroll

I agree, let the young guys play, put the vets on the bench or where ever else is suitable. However, just so you know, your snub made Chris Parmelee cry.
