If so, he probably should be fired. A manager is responsible for the improvement of his team, not to some unwritten rule about playing vets against a team on the cusp of playoff contention.

Vlad Jr isn't necessarily wrong.  It's just he shouldn't have said it out loud.  Kind of like early Royce Lewis in interviews.  There was even a bit for a while called "Royce says the darndest things."  It seems to be a trend throughout all of sports.  Get the big contract and you perform terrible the first year of the contract.  Some players try too hard to justify that contract.  Some players relax a little bit after they just got paid.  I'm not sure it reinforces the idea of a salary cap, but it could be an additional cautionary tale about not giving players that long of contracts or letting that type of player walk is acceptable.

Vlad isn’t the first, and certainly won’t be the last athlete in sports that loses the drive once they get the big contract. He was just dumb enough to say the quiet part out loud.

Not sure it is going to make a difference. Believe the As will handle the Astros this weekend in SAC...also, the Astros don't have Correa.. he will be floating in his pool on his air mattress

Coming back to this thought you had. I would not be surprised if MLB used this Vlad Jr example to put term limits on extension/FA contracts. These 10+ year contracts over the last decade have been absurd.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (via interpreter) on contract / expectations "Every at-bat when I fail, I think about my contract because I know all of these people who go to the games, they pay to see me being successful, to do something good every at-bat. Every time I think about that."

I read it like he's getting eaten up by the pressure to perform like a half billion dollar player every at bat.  Every guy on a huge contract feels it and doesn't talk about it, but at some point most of them figure something out. Bo Bichette started very slowly this spring too.

1.  I'm not giving the Trash Bangers any consideration in my thought process.

2. It's Fan Appreciation Weekend.  Give the fans what they want to see.  They don't want to see Bell in the lineup.  Let Bell PH to try to go for the win, but no fan wants to see Bell in September when you're out of the playoffs.  Jeffers is a different story.  I'm fine playing him since he came up with the organization and this will likely be his last games with the team, kind of like Torii Hunter before he left for Anaheim.

3. Shelton should be thinking about further developing a rapport with the youngsters if he really intends on being around next season to manage them.  Further, I believe the youngsters are hungrier right now and would actually give you a better chance to win than someone like Bell, who no one is going to consider this last weekend of stats toward his next contract.

Pretty much everyone in my age group mid to late 30s has a 3-5 year plan to gather as much money as possible before AI eliminates all of our jobs.

VG, Jr. is actually making contact more than ever and hitting the ball harder than the average player; he's just not hitting it as hard as he did the last few years. There are indications that he's been one of the unluckiest hitters this year, such as having a career-low HR/FB rate, by a lot, like more than half less than last year's rate and almost 2/3 less than 2024's.
