Dream Trade Candidate: Profar

While chatting with a buddy at the futures game yesterday we started talking about how the Rangers have really screwed up in regards to Profar thus far.

Profar is a natural SS and should be playing SS every day in the major leagues, for some reason the Rangers decided to give Andrus a 10 million dollar contract thus SS is not in the cards for Profar anytime soon. Recently they have been playing him in the OF and he has looked completely lost, Profar is a good ball player, but frankly he just isn't as special if he is stuck in LF and eventually 2B (When Kinsler leaves- he is signed for many more years)

Would it be worth going after Profar? Who could instantly give us that franchise SS we have needed...well....forever? Who would you give up? Would a package of Perkins+Arcia+Morneau+another 10-15 prospect be enough to get Texas to begin to listen? (Morneau is only included since he could potentially help them this year with Berkmans injury and Cruz about to be suspended)

Or am I just high to even think this?

The Rangers locked up a top-5 SS who is just 24 for a very long time versus rolling the dice with a very close but as-yet unproven talent. We should be so lucky to have an FO who would do the same.

They can always stick Kinsler in the outfield, esp. now that it looks like Cruz will be suspended for his involvement in the biogenesis deal.

Far from a screw up, from where I'm standing.

You're right. What were the Rangers thinking?

He isn't a very good hitter.

You can say what you want about Profar, but the Rangers still had Andrus under contract for a couple years, and Profar's defense was never in question. It's not like he would have a tough time matching Andrus career sub .700 OPS....

I like your proposed trade, no idea if it's doable. We have the 2 untouchables, no problem with putting everything else in play.

I would be almost say Meyer is untouchable as well, just due to our lack of significant pitching in anything close to the majors.

I agree that the Rangers have screwed up with Profar, but I think their other moves were quite sound actually, having too many infielders shouldn't be an issue, they just didn't manage it very well. As far as Profar is concerned, I thought a swap of Profar or Andrus should have occured this offseason. At least a little of Profar's luster will be worn off after this season.

Additionally, Profar should be a middle infielder, Dave's right, he's only a top prospect because he plays SS. Even in the minors, his offense didn't look like it would translate into anything overly exceptional. Does Ian Kinsler want to switch positions? Apparently no, but so what, it's not his decision and he's too injury prone to keep laying out for groundballs.

Why don't you try to get the Rangers to eat some money and go for Andrus instead? That at least seems more realistic and in the realm of possibility.

Absolutely not, I want nothing to do with a ten year contract.

I agree. I was going to suggest you not include any of our starting pitching prospects, but didn't want to nitpick.

I am trying to find out how Jurickson Profar was the #1 prospect Pre -3013 by Baseball America? So look at his numbers at AA in 2012.

AB H 2B 3B HR R RBI SB BA OBP

480 135 26 7 14 76 62 16 .281 .368

So that means they base most of their ratings of his defense and his arm. If Texas was smart they would put him in a blockbuster deal this July. Not impressed if that is the best you can do.

Here's the thing. Texas has a pretty good SS in Andrus, and an excellent prospect in Profar. For now they can hang on to him, but at one point they can dangle him for something they need or figure out a way to trade Andrus. Unfortunately for the Twins, I don't see this as a match, unless there's a way to pull off some sort of three way trade.

Here's why:

1) He put up those numbers as a 19 year old in AA, and I might add, he's posted a > .800 OPS at every other stop (granted AAA was PCL, but he's doing that at age 20).

2) Excellent defense.

3) OBP is about 90 points higher than BA. Excellent K/BB ratios in career.

4) Double digit home runs in 2011 and 2012 with a crap load of doubles.

Did I mention he's only 20? His power is only going to improve from here. This kid is a difference maker at short, especially when you consider that a guy like Florimon is your average ML SS.

So what you are saying is that Texas should give him a Joe Mauer contract right now.

I would gladly take Andrus and his contract. He's a young, plus defender that hits .280/.340/.350 most seasons. I will take a decade of that even though he will likely opt out in 2018.

I was thinking Perkins+ Morneau + Berrios/Harrison/Kepler.

I think Jeremy posted that the Rangers are hoping for Giancarlo Stanton.

But I would think that if Terry Ryan calls up and ask what it would take to get Profar, there would be a mon-Buxton/Sano answer.

15 million a year for a sub .700 OPS? pass.

Frankly you would be much much better off with JJ Hardy and pay only a fraction of the price. (Why the hell did we dump him again?)

Rangers bullpen and rotation is awesome, they don't need Perkins. They could use some corner OF offense and DH but Willingham is out and Morneau might be a slight upgrade at DH (I think his LH bat would do really well there). I'm certain they'd like a guy like Arcia for the long term but I'm not sure how much, if any, he helps them this year (again, his LH bat might play really nice there). So it's not really a good fit. Profar is helping them now and will be the long term replacement for Kinsler. They are in "win now" mode and we don't have anything that might help them. Arcia and one of Sano/Buxton would probably get us Profar but that's not worth it for us.

I don't think Profar could have ever happened but they do have another really nice MI prospect in Luis Sardines, ranked #84 by BA coming into the season. A healthy Willingham might have been able to get a conversation going on him.

Gee let me think how much do you think he is being paid this year? He is in the final year of a 3 YR $14.4M deal and then his new contract kicks in to $15M/Yr. I would only take the 8YR/$120M if it meant they took Mauer and hos contract.

I absolutely love the idea of acquiring Profar as well, but it is frankly not going to happen, although I think that saying Profar for Arcia and Sano/Buxton might be more than it would take. Both sides are unproven. Perhaps something like Arcia and Pinto (possibly Santana or another MI) would be easier to swallow.

Yes. SS is a position of dreadfully awful players and he was 5th and 6th in WAR in 2011/2012. Even if you don't like WAR it would be very difficult to name 10 SS's that are actually better than Andrus. Nevermind that he's 24 yrs old.
