Any time someone can throw 98 almost 90 pitches into the game, that’s impressive

The raw stuff is there and so is the movement but he just doesn’t come anywhere close to spotting the ball where it’s supposed to be and more often than not it’s left over the heart of the plate

Any good hitter is going to hit that stuff.

Kind of counterintuitive to say the movement is there but he's leaving the ball over the heart of the plate.

Our guys like to just watch that stuff go by, this year, unfortuneately.

Not sure about the movement part. Gets squared up at an alarming rate.

His fastball run was in the 74th percentile last year. That’s solid. It just doesn’t matter if it’s in the hitters hot zone

One school of thought would be to let Varland continue until his arm falls off at this point.

Bench inflicted, RI?

Is that the new rule for utility players to pitch? 8 run lead?

Irvin's stuff is meh, at best. Twins should tee off on this guy.

Santana playing such inspiring baseball. He must be the clubhouse leader.

Twins screwed up when they signed Santana.  Falvey thought he hired a Santa for the Twins off season caravan.

Another approach to take.

There's something to work with here. Location sucks, pitch execution sucks, two strike thought process sucks.  All things that can be fixed.

But throwing 98 at the 90th pitch can't be taught. He needs some time as he just figured out the 98 thing last year.  Living at 96 with more movement and dotting 98 occasionally late in the game is ace level ****.

The Orioles are loaded with talent.  They're outclassing us.

Didn’t want to like this but did

I think it's time to move Varland to the pen and try SWR as a starter instead.  Can't hurt to try at this point.

Unsure on the corresponding roster move at this point.

So we’re moving Varland to the pen and the only legit backup plans are Dobnak and Festa (who is being limited to like 65 pitches a game)?

not going to happen without them acquiring a starter

Varland isn't going to the pen anytime soon. August maybe.  St Paul, likely.
