This came up on mlbtraderumors today.

I have to say, I'd almost be angry if Syndegaard were added. If the Dodgers couldn't fix him, he is probably done. My opinion is this signals they are going to add a starter, and still most likely via trade.

Of the players listed, I only really think that Lorenzen and Ryu could constitute a potential upgrade over DeScalfani and Varland. The rest, I'd consider as a minor league depth type signing.

Your thoughts?

Agreed.  Syndergaard on a minorleague deal is fine.  but I am thinking Ryu personally.

I wouldn't at all hate Ryu if they aren't able to make a trade at this time. I could get behind that.

I'd be ok with Thor on a minor league deal because there's basically no such thing as a bad minor league deal, but I wouldn't be excited about that at all. He looks finished to me. Lorenzen would be a pretty "meh" move to me. It's basically just DeSclafani 2.0. Depth is important, but they need to stop adding to the bottom of the roster and start adding to the top.

It is actually a little discouraging when the article states that Lorenzen and Syndergaard are the type of pitchers and level of cost that the Twins are seeking.

Count me among any who would like the bar to be raised by adding players who are better than what we have. At some point this will have an effect on team morale. Players understand that Corbin Burnes, Jesus Luzardo, and Logan Gilbert types are additions that strengthen a team. Minor league deals with an invite ..... sure. Just don't do anything that restricts starts/innings for all of Ryan, Ober, Varland, and Paddack unless it is an ace addition.

I have zero interest in backup/not all that good players at this point. Add stars, or move on.

Yeah, wait until spring training when these types start accepting MiLB deals. They can get an emergency vet for St. Paul like they did Keuchel or Sanchez, but they shouldn't be adding more Keuchel's or Sanchez's  to the MLB roster.

But before everyone gets upset about this, Bob Nightengale didn't list any of those starters in his article, that was all MLBTR conjecture based on what the Twins were looking at prior to both the TV deal and the DeSclafani deal.

The Sonny Gray experience has shown that great pitching won't win if the team is on the wrong side of a 1-0 game. They need more bats.

Not more bats. Better bats.

And if anything, the Sonny Gray experience showed the opposite in the playoffs. They won playoff games 3-0, 2-0 and 6-2 while losing playoff games 6-4, 9-1 and 3-1.

So they were 3 wins and 1 loss in the games they pitched well. They need a perennial MVP contending type bat for the middle of the lineup. They already paid Correa and Buxton, if they can't provide the offense, the bat will have to come from somewhere else internally. More bench filler free agents won't solve that problem.

But, still more importantly, they need a second starter for the big games.

I could get behind Ryu. He's certainly not the pitcher he once was, but he was pretty solid in his 11 starts for Toronto last season. He doesn't do much to move the needle, but he shouldn't be expensive, is very capable of helping replace some quality innings we've lost, and do we even know if DeSclafini is healthy enough to begin the season in the rotation??

I'm fine with someone like Syndergaard, Cueto, or Odorizzi on a milb deal with an invite and an opt out. Why not take a shot and see if you get lucky? But if we're going to sign someone, Ryu is the only "affordable" arm out there that interests me.

At this point I'd rather wait for the deadline.  Whole lot can change by then as far as who's available, both on the ace pitcher side and the prospects available side.  I'd rather run with who we got if we aren't bringing in someone at the top.
