A really lovely sign off from May:

Quote

After 16 years of professional baseball, today is the day that I hang up the cleats for good. This decision has proven to be one of the harder ones I've ever had to make, as I've loved baseball ever since I took the tee-ball field for the first time at 5 years old. Being a Major Leaguer has been my dream for as long as I can remember. From playing Kelso Cal Ripken League, to Babe Ruth at 13, to a trip to the Washington 3A State Championship game.

The bigs always felt so far away, yet somehow possible. I am proud to say that that was a dream I actually got to live. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to all of those that supported me along the way.

To my parents for sacrificing their summer days and weekends to shuttle me from practice to practice, tournament to tournament. To the many coaches that believed in me through my childhood. To the University of Washington for offering me a scholarship and the Philadelphia Phillies for taking a chance on a goofy 18 year old from the Northwest in the 4th round of the 2008 draft. To the coaches I've had over the years in the minors. To the Minnesota Twins for giving me a chance to be a big leaguer. To the New York Mets for giving me a chance to play on the biggest stage and to the Oakland Athletics for giving me the opportunity to finish my career
strong.

Thank you to the fans, for all of it. We play this game for you. You make it easy to go out there, day in and day out, and give everything I have. I hope I was able to give even a small portion of the joy that you guys brought me. I may not be on the field anymore, but I hope to see many of you in the stands!

It's been a pleasure putting on a uniform and in the words of my dad, Ron, "onward and upward!" PS. Earlier this year, Sean Doolittle said something in his own announcement
that I absolutely loved, so I'm going to steal it.

"I'm sorry I made many of you nervous when I pitched. I was nervous too."

Great retirement announcement.  Retirement comes to most of us...if we are lucky.  It is nothing to fear. It brings new opportunities to serve others, to laugh, to love and to enjoy this one life each of us has been given. Thanks for the memories Trevor. Now go make some new memories.

He will be missed on the baseball field. Definitely one of the good guys in the sport that gets it. With his experience streaming on Twitch, maybe one day we will see him try out commentating at a Twins game.

That would say a lot about the Twins if they did. Surely May knew he was going to be blacklisted after napalming a member of the Billionaire Boys Club for trying to do exactly what Carl Pohlad failed to do 20 some years ago.

He said those things AFTER he announced his retirement. He kept quiet so long as he was employed. He made the decision to retire, announced it, then took the moment to say it like it is.

Right, but broadcasters are employed by the teams, so it would be quite something if the Twins or any team hired him after he spoke out about one of their own.

Hmmm.  A lot to digest here. The A's aren't the only team like this. And it's not brave to say something after the fact. Curt Flood was brave. He took on the whole good old boys club in his prime.  And today's players benefit from it.

The economics of baseball have changed a lot since Flood's playing days.  (Due in fair measure to Flood himself.). A journeyman like Trevor May stands to make a lot more money in his career, even in equivalent dollars, than back then.  It's asking a lot of a middle class guy, to make that sacrifice.  To me, it makes perfect sense to take The Man's dough and then turn around and blast Him, laughing all the way to the bank.  Poor form would be to blast the fans who ultimately paid him.

Your veneration of Curt Flood is well placed, though.

I mean, he’s probably not going to get paid by the Athletics organization after this and he knows it. Oh well. It’s not like what he said was wrong.

Why would the Twins care about what Trevor May publicly said about the Athletics? Trevor Plouffe has a daily opinion about other MLB teams on his Jomboy podcasts and has appearances with the Twins too.

I should also say Trevor May one day working for whatever the network is called that the Twins sign with this offseason is pure speculation. The “famous” Twitch streamers make plenty of money as an independent voice. Maybe Trevor has no interest going the same route as Morneau, Perkins, Plouffe, etc.

Dallas Braden is on the A's broadcast team. He also is on "Baseball is Dead" podcast.

He is critical on that show when issues come up on which he can render opinion. Not bashful.

Except for the A's. Never a bad word about them and he skirts or deflects the discussion when it comes to the A's. He knows who butters his bread. I enjoy his presence on the podcast but I am also aware of when his shoes are too tight.

The fiddler always determines who what song he plays.

Doesn't bother me if the Twins brought him back, I'd be happy to see him.

Just seems what he said about the A's owner would be a particularly sensitive subject for the Pohlad family. So it would be an applaudable move if they did hire him, as they'd basically be confronting their family's darkest moment. (I mean other than the time Carl built the family fortune by foreclosing on starving families the second a payment was past due during the depression)
