If you could remove 3 on the 40 man roster

I am from St. Louis and we are having trouble dropping people from the 40 man roster if we don't DL someone for 60 days. We will have to do that when we put a backup catcher on the 25 man team. If we sign another reliever, another will have to go which may mean eating Cecil's contract.

You guys don't have any troublesome longterm contracts after getting rid of Hughes's. Since mid-season last year we have had to trade players for minor leaguers that didn't need to be places on the 40 man roster, left off a few players from Rule V draft and disabled a few.

Are you guys looking for whom may get caught in a roster crunch? The Cards like have 11 or so starters for 5 spots so we will have to make some moves.

We traded Lynn to the Yankees for Tyler Austin and a rookie-league arm.

We thought we got value from that trade, but who knows. Austin is young, plays 1B and appears to be able to mash lefties, but then our front office went and claimed CJ Cron from Tampa Bay, another right-handed hitting 1B only. So, who knows.

Lynn was also one of the pitchers who signed really late in spring training, and didn't appear to be in shape when he arrived. Just an overall forgettable deal.

Thanks to the Yankees, we effectively bought two prospects (if you want to call Tyler Austin a prospect) for $12 million. Not good, but was looking way worse until July 30.

Good problems to have.

Please let us know before the Cards drop anybody, so the Twins can have first dibs!

I get the feeling Austin is going to be Waived heading into the regular season. I hope he sneaks through to AAA, because I’d like to see him continue progressing with the Twins. If he got claimed, it wouldn’t be the end of the world.

I can’t wait for Perez to get DFA’d.

The Twins never had any trouble getting Kennys Vargas through. Vargas’ MLB track record is pretty similar to Austin’s.

Honestly, other than not brining in a single, solid, past-proven arm for the bullpen, Perez is my single complaint to the off-season. I just don't get it! Whatever they see in him, I sure hope Johnson can work some magic. I really wanted to keep the 5th spot open for Romero, Mejia, Gonsalves, Stewart, Littell, etc, opener or not, to audition for today and tomorrow.

Here's hoping we have to look up recipes for crow.

Actually, the Twins did lose Vargas the first time they sent him through waivers, to the Reds last spring. But we claimed him back on waivers a few days later, then finally passed him through unclaimed a few days after that.

I see one big difference between Vargas and Austin so far: opportunity. Vargas had 859 MLB PA when we sent him through waivers, while Austin only has 404. I could see some clubs wanting to give Austin a shot, where maybe they felt they had already seen enough from Vargas.

Actually, I see another difference too: power. While their overall wRC+ are the same, the shape of their production has been a bit different. Austin has shown more power the last couple years than Vargas ever really managed to sustain -- it's just that Austin K's more and walks less. Maybe someone thinks they can tweak Austin towards productivity better than they could Vargas.

fifth starter should have been solved by acquiring a front of rotation starter and bump Pineda down. If not, then agreed, see what you got.

I’m with you, I’d gladly eat crow, but what if we’re right AND Pineda is still lame? Cripes that’s a lot riding on Mejia and Gonsalves/Stewart/Thorpe! Suddenly the rotation gets very thin, fast

Agreed.

But history states a healthy Pineda is pretty good. History also states Odorizzi is better than the version we got last season. A trade for a front line starter includes some combination of Lewis, Kirilloff, Graterol and others. Are we ready to do that at this point?

I'm banking on Berrios, Gibson and retaining one of Pineda or Odorizzi and our prospects along with a move yet to be made.
