Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted October 22, 2018 Posted October 22, 2018 Austin issued a water boil order for drinking water today. We've had so much rain over the last month they had to shut down the water treatment plant because debris got caught in the filters. I can say with this minor inconvenience many people in this city would die if a real emergency happened. You would think the world is going to end at the grocery store. People are sticking up on a week's worth of bottled water when the issue will he resolved in a day or 2. Do you have faith in your community to not lose it over a minor inconvenience?
Badsmerf Verified Member Posted October 22, 2018 Posted October 22, 2018 Why don't they just boil the water and put it in the fridge? People are easily scared into making rash decisions....
PseudoSABR Verified Member Posted October 22, 2018 Posted October 22, 2018 You want me to boil my own water? What are we, heathens?

Mr. Brooks Verified Member Posted October 23, 2018 Posted October 23, 2018 Perhaps not everyone thinks it will only be a day or two. And perhaps not everyone considers it just a minor inconvenience. Bolling drinking water for yourself, or even a small family may sound simple enough. For many people's situations though, it may not be practical. Nursing homes, hospitals, daycare facilities, schools, and restaurants come to mind. Elderly and/or partially disabled people also may find bottled water much more practical than boiling and storing. I'm sure there are plenty more.

TheLeviathan Old-Timey Member Posted October 23, 2018 Posted October 23, 2018 I expect Vanimal has been enveloped in a Walking Dead-like apocalypse in Austin by now. He'll be missed occasionally.

(And obviously for those who might find themselves choosing between heating their home in winter and boiling water to drink; like Flint.)

gunnarthor Old-Timey Member Posted October 23, 2018 Posted October 23, 2018 I generally have faith in people to do good and try and help each other. FEMA on the other hand ... In all seriousness, the area I live in will deal with the occasional tornado and lots of blizzards and I think we'll be ok. The city has a pretty good response to those emergencies.

Squirrel Community Moderator Posted October 23, 2018 Posted October 23, 2018 Without coffee in the office I am basically a dead person walking. Why no coffee? Isn't water boiled for that?
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted October 23, 2018 Author Posted October 23, 2018 Why no coffee? Isn't water boiled for that?I guess the Keurig doesn't heat up the water enough for it to 'boil' and be safe for consumption.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted October 23, 2018 Posted October 23, 2018 Why no coffee? Isn't water boiled for that? It shouldn't be boiled.....too hot. Makes the coffee more bitter.
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted October 23, 2018 Posted October 23, 2018 Bread and milk disappearing from grocery shelves when a major snowstorm is approaching has been part of the experience for as long as I can remember. To an extent, that makes sense, though. People might be low on supplies that they'd normally buy tomorrow, or the next day, or even the next day. With a hard deadline approaching, all those people cram into the same places to buy the same stuff off their normal schedule. I'm not saying there isn't overreaction in those situations - there most certainly is - but I think it's a combination of a few things at once.

My boss jokingly proposed making a run for vodka and red bull because we're all grumpy without coffee in the morning.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted October 23, 2018 Author Posted October 23, 2018 One positive development: beer is still good and doesn't need to be boiled to consume.

Mr. Brooks Verified Member Posted October 29, 2018 Posted October 29, 2018 So you're saying that the people stocking up on a week's worth of water had it right, exactly to the day?
