Sooo, I went to the Tucson symphony last weekend. They were playing Beethoven's Ninth, one of Mrs Chief's favorites.

As you might know, there's a long passage in this piece, maybe 15 minutes, during which the double basses have no parts. I noticed that as the orchestra reached this part, the two bassists snuck out the back. I was curious, so I snuck out the side door and followed them. Sure enough, they hustled over to a bar, and were quickly pounding back beers as fast as they could. I was fascinated, so I followed them in and took up a place next to them at the bar.

Soon enough, one of them checked his watch and looked startled. "Hey, we need to get back!" he said.

"Not to worry," said the other. "I wanted an extra beer or two, so I tied a cord around the last few pages of the conductor's score. It'll take him at least an extra couple minutes to untie it."

With that, they each pounded back two more beers in what seemed like two minutes, and then sort of staggered back to their place in the orchestra.

I slipped back in, and sat down next to Mrs Chief. She leaned towards me and whispered, "Something is wrong, the conductor is fiddling with the score, and he looks really worried."

"Well," I whispered back, "of course he is. It's the bottom of the Ninth, the score is tied, and the bassists are loaded."

Wow, a joke I’ve never heard before. /s

I would have liked to have been there in person to see Willians run first to home. It was entertaining on TV, but I bet live would have been better.

Chief,

Have I told you about when I worked as a bellboy in Sun Valley Idaho back in the nineties?  One of our famous local residents was Arnold Schwarzenegger, who was in his post-Terminator hey day and rolling in cash from his turn as Mr. Freeze in a regrettable Batman flick.

Anyway, one day I found myself riding the chairlift with Arnie.  I finally struck up the nerve to talk to him.  He was quite gregarious, and was soon lamenting to me about the fact he had been typecast in Hollywood, along with his friends Bruce Willis and Sylvester Stallone.  All they could get were action roles.

He went on to tell me that the three of them were independently producing a dramatic film about the great composers of the 19th century.  He told me, in his swarthy Austrian accent:

"Bruce will play Tchaikovsky."

I nodded.

"Sylvester, the Itallian Stallion will be Verdi."

I nodded again, and the waited expectantly.  After a while, I finally asked him who he would play.

He answered, "Well of course, I'll be Bach."

When you're up by one run you have to pitch like it's a 1-run game. When you're up by three runs you have the luxury to pitch like it's a no-hitter.

And the manager has the luxury of managing like it's a no-hitter.

Two different pitchers this season with 6+ inning outings vs the Yanks and only one hit surrendered.

Two different TWINS pitchers did that...

So that's two different, current Twins pitchers? Six consecutive innings?

I'm just trying to process this, and it's slow going.

Yes.

Send him out there.

Take him out if he gives up a hit or walk.

Go, Jake!

So, I'm quoting my own thing just to say---

How much more impressive is Jake's effort today, with Cave instead of Bux in CF, and Robby instead of Eddie R in LF?

Oh, good, there's a man on for G. Stanton.

Had been worried there wouldn't be drama without the FRE, but need not have.

Speaking of Willmar State Junior College...in English 101, I was taught "i before e, except after c."

But I was confused by this later that day when I showed up for Science 101.

EDIT: My answer, of course, was to stop showing up for either.
