Atlanta is calling up #5 overall pick from the 2017 draft Kyle Wright to help in the bullpen for the rest of the season.

Wow, Wright was one of my favorite prospects from that class, and I didn't suspect he'd reach AAA and the majors in his first full year. That's of course because I'm used to Twins prospects struggling at some point... I really need to start following other teams' minor leagues and see how a functional system is supposed to work.

He was pretty average in the Southern League in 20 starts this year (age 22), but improved the last couple of games. Never pitched against Chattanooga. Promoted to AAA in August, he did well in 3 of 4 starts, then pitched in relief the last three games.

 

I suspect the Twins would turn a 22 year old starter into a temporary relief pitcher if it would help them in the playoffs.

Why would you assume that? Brent Rooker was picked 30 picks later and started at the same level as Wright.

 

The Braves playoff chase is enviable not only because they're playing baseball that is entertaining to watch but because there is more incentive for the club to call up prospects that can help the final push. Wright has been good, not great, if the Braves were angling for a 90 loss season I can't imagine they'd toss away their service time leverage after the fan base already turned off their TVs.

I would hope so.

 

They sort of did it in 2006 with Perkins, although we really needed starters for those playoffs, not relievers. (Perkins relieved Brad Radke in our elimination game that year -- and it would turn out to be Perk's only career postseason appearance.)

 

They could have done it in 2010 with Gibson, but didn't. (Traded Ramos for Capps instead?)

 

They sort of did it with Trevor May in 2015, although they waffled on it in August. They also passed on doing it with Berrios that year.

 

The new front office hasn't had many chances yet. I suppose they could have tried it with Fernando Romero last year? Or even this year -- they sent Romero down right around the same time they added Belisle to the pen.

Yup. Gibson was also in a similar position in 2010, the year after being drafted, and that was with the old front office.

 

I could see the new front office doing the same promotion schedule as the Braves did for Kyle Wright, especially in a pennant race. Of course, they actually need to sign and develop a Kyle Wright first, and get us back into a pennant race too...

In two years they have had one chance (last year), and didn't do it. Doesn't mean they won't in the future but....

I think that was the plan with Garza as well but an injury got him into the rotation after one bullpen appearance, IIRC. They should have done it with Meyer - Gardy asked - but they didn't.

 

Bluntly, after 2010 or so, they haven't really had great pitching prospects to try it with. They could've made Romero start in the pen this year, for example, but they let him start instead. And, obviously, they could have drafted Wright or another college pitcher (Dakota Hudson) instead of Kiriloff and Lewis.

I think Liriano and Santana were different situations -- both had already pitched in MLB, so it wasn't like they were accelerated. They may have gone to the pen for a bit to control their innings.

 

Perkins was an example. Looks like Garza was basically Liriano's replacement in the rotation.

 

The Twins weren't competitive with Meyer during Gardy's tenure (2013-2014) -- did Molitor want to open the 2015 season with him in the pen? They also opted not to recall him late in 2015 after he shifted to the pen at AAA.
