Article: Suiting up in September?

In Rhett Bolinger's recent article about September call ups, TR said this..."The types of guys we're talking about are guys who have earned the promotion from what they've done at Triple-A or Double-A"

If he truely means this, Chris Colabello should get a shot. Becuase of his position, it would be hard to find him AB's. But the guy at least deserves a taste. I hope we resign him and he can play for Rochester next year.

I think finding AB's for most of the guys we call up is going to be a challenge. Yes, Parmelee, Slama, Vasquez, Colabello, Carson, Dozier, and Manship, should be called up, but just finding time for these guys to play is going to be a little difficult, not to mention adding some of these guys to the 40-man roster, because we already have several outfielders and infielders deserving playing time up in the majors before the players we call up.

True, but given that the MILB seasons will be done, who cares? I agree on those seven exactly. It's a small amount of money to pay them and there is a good case for 2013 to be made for all of them in some capacity.

If Manship and Slama are called up it should not be too hard to find innings for them. Imagine a staff where Jeff grey has the second most wins.

Arcia

If he is called up this Sept, does that start his Service time "Clock"?

If so best to not call him up and hopefully the Twins can wait until after June 2013 to get him with the big league club. If it does not start his service time clock then yes call him up

Hicks - Same as above - but if he is added to the 40 man during the season does that lessen the amount of years he has before he must be called up?

Dozier - No Scholarships. Keep him down and off the team. He has not shown he is a quality MLB player

Ramirez - Yes. He is interesting and not under control so it would be good to see what he can do.

Manship - I would like to see start games. I think he is better as a Starter

Parmelee, Manship, Vasquez, Carson, and Escobar.

Gardy probably would like to learn more about Escobar.

Dozier hasn't earned to go back.

I like others would like to see Slama but the Twins FO think otherwise.

I 100% agree that Colabello deserves the September call-up, and I hope he gets it.

Also note that Escobar has done about as much as Dozier in the last month, so you can't say that one deserves it and the other 'hasn't earned it.' Of course, two weeks isn't enough time to evaluate anything... which of course, should be the theme for September and spring training.

I think Arcia, Hicks, Parmalee, Manship, Escobar, Carson, maybe Vasquez as he can work out of the bullpen.

I do not think Slama will be here, but it is a possibility Dozier will. Unless the Twins decide to put Casilla on the bench for September, Dozier's opportunities will be limited.

I believe the Twins would like to see how Hicks and Arcia far against major league pitching. This will help with what to do with Span in the offseason.

The big offseason questions are whether to keep Casilla; trade Span/Morneau/Willingham; and find starting pitching. Parmalee and dozier are big parts of the answers. You have to call them up and give them playing time. I would also give a shot to Arcia and Hicks but only if you are going to give them OF playing time. Gardy said Span is batting leadoff so why would you call somebody up and then sit on bench. Definitely Walters and Vazquez should get some starts.

Sad to say, but Brian Dozier has not earned his way back. The guy may simply need more experience at the AAA level, where less pressure allows him to get his game firmed up - at 2B.

I'd love to see Parmelee again, but that means fewer AB's for Morneau and Mauer. Arcia earned his cup of coffee. Might as well see what Manship and Vasquez can do, too.

Slama... Why not, o lord? Pitch him or set him free.

Yeah, that's why I don't think Hicks will come up. He'll play Winter ball, and he'll get added to the 40 man roster in November, and he'll come to spring training. The Twins know what they have with him. Arcia is a guy who I think could come up and be Ok with the bat. Then again, the if you have Span and Revere and Willingham, those guys are going to play a lot. I get that you can move them around, give guys days off, but you also have Carson (maybe) and Mastroianni to fill in there too. it becomes a numbers game.

How about Deibinson Romero? The 26-year-old 3B had another solid season in New Britain. He hit .264/.355/466 with 21 doubles, 18 homers and 74 RBI. He also can (again) become a minor league free agent after the season. Last year he stayed with the Twins. Might he look elsewhere next year if the Twins don't add him to the 40 man roster?

Playing time should be irrelevant as these guys dont have to play to learn alot

I also dont care if guys like Span, Mauer, Morny etc play. Mn knows exactly what they have.

Mn kept WRamos in AAA because of service time......that worked out well. Quit worrying about small market thinking

I don't think 'service time' plays into any of this... some fans like to throw it out there, but it's not the case. Just last year they called up Hendriks, Parmelee and Benson. They didn't worry about their service time. But they all played. the service time is not at all an issue in the call ups.

As much as I would love to see Colabello get a call-up, apparently Terry Ryan indicated to a few people at New Britain Stadium last week that he didn't think Colabello was "ready." Though he did acknowledge that Colabello had had a fantastic season.

Just hearsay, of course.

Why are we worried about playing time? The minor league season will be over. Even if they only play a handful of games and spend most of the time sitting on the bench, isn't that better than sitting on the couch at home?

I don't know if the Twins will do this, but they could work them into the lineup to make it worthwhile - maybe 2-3 slots in the lineup per game. I wouldn't play more than that - most of the people in the stands are paying to see Mauer, Morneau & Span, not Parmelee, Escobar & Colabello, but they would still get some major league at-bats.

There are 2 empty spots on the 40-man roster. So only 2 players not on the roster right now can get in, and they should (not sure that they will) move Capps to the 60-day DL to open another spot.

Slama, Vasquez should have priority over those spots so Colabello is unlikely (unless someone like Capps gets off). I think that both Dozier and Escobar will be called up. Arcia and Hicks do deserve it (And their clock will not start btw). Carson too. I don't know about Manship... Really. He has been worse than Jeff Gray every of the 3 seasons he got an opportunity. He is not a prospect, he is not a kid, he is not effective, he is out of options. Goodbye. I would hate it if he turns into the Tolbert of the pitching staff. They should probably get another catcher up there too, but they will not. Parmelee is a given.

Another note: Walters is on the 60-day DL. To add him you got to make another move and I'd rather see Slama and Vasquez before him up there... On the other hand, DFAing Manship and Gray will not hurt the team (even though I do not think that Walters is anything special)

Can minor leaguers that are injured be transferred to the 60 day DL? there are 3-4 on the 7-day milb DL

Maybe its cuz I'm a South Dakota kid, but I don't get why Thielbar wouldn't be called up. He is a lefty, and if the Twins are going to keep Duensing in the rotation and Perkins as the closer I think another lefty would actually be used if called upon. Add in that the last 2 Sunday pre-game radio shows he has gotten high praise by whoever the Twins FO had on that day.

Guerra's ERA is bad, but his strike out numbers are solid in AAA. Reliver ERA is not very reliable as an indicator. His young age gives him upside. I think he will have a better career than the other pitchers on the list. I hope it is with Minnesota.

Glad you mentioned Romero.

It looks like the Twins specifically opened up a 3rd spot on the 40 man by outrighting Gray. So I'll start with Vasquez, Slama and...I kinda think Hicks. With Span dinged up (shocker!) I think theyll roll with anothert CFer. And Ill go with Dozier & Carson, not Escobar. That'll be it, I think.

Except for Bruno. I bet we hear Bruno is around too.

Yeah, they always add one coach in September... I wouldn't be surprised if it's Brunansky, but I also wouldn't be surprised if it's Jake Mauer or Ray Smith. I'd love to see the Twins give Ray Smith the bullpen coach job if or when Rick Stelmaszek retired. He's earned it with what he's done in E-Town.

Didn't Bobby Cuellar get that job in Pittsburgh, then was fired with the rest of the staff when Hurdle came in?

So, are you saying this September promotion would be the kiss of death?

I would think that Slama and Vazques would get the call, just to see what htey can do... then again, I would have thought this would have happened a month ago.
