Charles Krauthammer is not my favorite columnist, but this from tomorrow's Washington Post seems especially a propos tonight:

"In that spirit, but without the cash, I offer the Krauthammer Conjecture: In sports, the pleasure of winning is less than the pain of losing. By any Benthamite pleasure/pain calculation, the sum is less than zero. A net negative of suffering. Which makes you wonder why anybody plays at all."

That's one of the few things he's said lately that make any sense at all.

If they have to have a ladder, hitters should be "rung up" if they hit it.

How many players named Jacob have hit it?

I can't think of anything I'm less interested in than Tim kirkjians piece on how good of a chef Phil Hughes is

You could listen to Dick and Jack prattle on about Jack's high school basketball career.

The only thing keeping me from changing it is that the espn game is in HD

Had to step away for a bit.  Did Phil just save our bacon in that 7th?

Edit-- and after we go down 1-2-3, does he come back out for the 8th?

Mute it and throw on some music. That's always a good bet.

But I want to hear them talk about "exit velo". Kirkjian, sutcliffe and fat Jonah hill. What a team

No wonder I haven't watched espn baseball in about a decade. Doesn't appear that I'm missing anything.

I have to assume that the ladder is a safety escape for the people up in the nose-bleed seats. So you couldn't take it down.

Haven't seen one game at Fenway (Scott Baker lost despite good performance and a lovely triple from Nick Punto), I'm not at all impressed. It could be (and probably was) a nice 25,000 seat stadium, but making it seat more means half the crowd is in 60 rows of bad seats behind the rightfield wall. Plus you have obstructed views due to the poles in the good seats. It's historic, but, really, not a good baseball stadium IMHO.

If it's for safety you'd want the ladder to lead out of the stadium, not into it.

Zoinks--

Don't know how this looks live, but this Kelly guy looks absolutely filthy on gameday.  He is painting with a massive heater, and dropping strikes in with a 20mph-less curve...?

Ouch.

Actually, most ballpark evacuation plans use the field as the safe space to move to. Not saying the ladder is for that though.

But if there was a fire at the back of the stands, wouldn't you need someplace in the front to exit?

This reminds me of a horrendous stadium fire from England back in the 80's

It's too bad this is the last game of the series. Kelly and Kimbrel are probably both going to be unavailable tomorrow. Kelly threw 30. Kimbrel is at 17 with just 1 out.

#%@&% Red Sox.

I totally agree. Red Sox fans are among the most sanctimonious around. They think that everyone should love their team just because they are only the second most hate-able team in MLB.

The good news is that this game was lost much sooner than those two entered
