Buy or sell? Neither Retool

Before I start I should mention my bias. I believe In taking care of the future, if you take care of the future the future will take care of you.

Anywho,

The twins are in an interesting position. At the start of the year no one predicted them into being in the position they are in, as a fringe contender. On the buy sell front I hope they do not sell any of their top prospects, as it is likely a mistake for a borderline team. That being said after so much losing, winning is such a strong craving. We all want the Twins to make the playoffs. So here's how I would manage the situation.

Use position players who have a viable backup not named Buxton Kepler and Sano to acquire pitching. Preferably guys with future control or low cost rentals.

Guys who could bring back varying levels of pitching:

Rosario

Polanco

Escobar

Adrianza

Dozier

Grossman

Vargas

Palka

Granite

Giminez

Any of these guys could be moved without destroying the future, but could bring back a rental bullpen piece(s) mid rotation starter with control, a rental back end starter..etc.

My opinion is that none of those guys, besides Dozier, get's a starter....and with the 2B market the way it is, well Dozier isn't gonna get us what we all want.

Listen, I want us to get more starting pitching too.  I understand what you are trying to state here,, but nobody wants our average to below average players (which all of those guys are sans Dozier and hopefully Polonco), and if they do, it's for a relief pitcher (probably not a great one).

Just for clarity I am not suggesting all of them could bring back starters but a couple could and others could bring back relievers. Just listed possible moveable parts who could attract some level of pitching.

Thanks for clarifying.  I still think that nobody brings back a major or minor league pitcher (that has potential) besides Dozier.

Very few of those guys even brings back a reliever that is better than a risk, IMO.  Very few.

We usually seem to value our players/prospects (especially non top 100 prospects) more than others.

To get youngish, controllable pitching (starters or relievers), you have to give up real prospects (like top 5) or established vets.

We all love Polanco, but the reality is that he is hitting .242/.294/.338 (.632). He's not getting much for us. Palka is an unproven prospect with an MLb future that is very suspect.

We would need to surrender a prospect for a make-a-difference pitcher.

Unless we ate a big salary.

Pitching is required. <--Most obvious statement of 2017.

Tradeable position assets:

- Gimenez

- Dozier

- Rosario/Kepler/Grossman (but only one of them)

- Escobar/Adrianza (but only one of them)

- Vargas

- Various minor leaguers (Byungho Park is a bust, mind you)

Pitching contracts that are up. If not wanted, flip them for anything they can get, even if almost nothing:

- Santiago

- Kintzler

- Belisle

- Breslow

- Turly

- Perkins (Included for completeness. There will be no takers.)

None of this will lead to a good starting pitcher, but even just a prospect or two for 2018/2019 would help take the edge off of what needs to be done during the offseason.

I agree with Yarn on this one, we have beat this whole trade deal into the ground on other threads.

Twins need to go for prospects because we can barely beat the White Sox with our best pitcher.

Buy? No

Sell? No

Retool? No

Balance? Yes

I would part with some major league offense to add some major league pitching (non rental). That includes.... Dozier, Polanco, Rosario, Grossman, and Vargas

Most of those guys have their flaws but they also have upside. Other teams' flawed players always look more interesting than your own flawed players.

Doug FISter is available?

He was not viewed as an upgrade over Nolasco.  I do not know if his fastball ever came back, but I wold be guessing not.

Absolutely not bashing the idea or intent of the article. But I disagree with the premise. Position player wise, I really like the construction and potential of this team.

But to me, re-rooling of this team means sticking with ALL of the young players, at the very least, and seeing how they grow and develop. This team IS playing young players now. Something we've all been asking for and waiting for. But some want to trade Polanco and Rosario, amongst others. Why? Because they aren't performing at all star levels already?

Play these guys, stick with them, and promote some RP, promote others to AAA like Jorge and Gonsalvez and possibly Romero, though IP limits might have him in the pen to end the season.

Dozier, as much as I love him, is the one guy replaceable who might bring a viable SO option back. Otherwise, stay the course, see what you have when the season is done, and between FA, trade and ST battles, re-tool more then.

Was Dillon Gee given a minor league contract? How long till he is in the rotation?

Yes.

Double header coming next week. Unless Turley shows something soon, Gee is probably the next one in the queue. Maybe Turley will earn another start with his performance today.

So judging by the comments on this forum the only trade able (not saying we should) assets for pitching are Dozier, Santana, Buxton, Sano and Kepler.  Oh wait, the market is so narrow that Dozier is really untradeable because he's a 2b, nobody will give us anything for Santana because he's 34 and was suspended a few years back for PEds and is in the second to last year of his deal, Buxton has not taken off yet, and Kepler is still relatively raw.  The rest of the roster is full of garbage players and prospects not worthy of being trade for a major league starter and the front office won't draft a college level starter with the first or supplementary picks.

Man we are in a pickle here aren't we?

Yeah it didn't make a lot of sense to me either that they passed up some of the top college pitchers when it appears that they have pretty good position players in place and they need pitching help now, pronto. My only guess is that it is probably a safer bet that position players will have a better chance of developing over pitchers. Pitchers seem to be very tricky to predict. So if they load their system with position players then they will more likely have more tradable chips in the future to get pitching or what not. But that doesn't really solve anything for the next 3 or 4 years, but that is my guess.

Position players seem to turn out better at the top of the draft, rather than pitchers.  Only question here is will Pohlad open up the wallet to get better pitching.  This winter should be interesting, as I would focus on relievers(starters all have warts(Cueto, Arrieta) and will cost more than they are worth. Retool, get rid of the non productive players and hopefully by the start of next year some of the Lookouts pitching staff will be in Minnesota.

This team is 2 solid, reliable SPs and 3 RPs away from being a team that will compete into October. With all the injuries to the RP prospects this year good luck acquiring enough through trade. Even if your brough Gonsalves up in July (not sure if he's ready) I think he hits an innings limit issue by October (no playoffs for him). Romero won't be ready by July either. Let these guys play out the rest of the season, get some playoff-hunt experience this year, then, come back ready next year with 3-4 quality starters and a few bullpen pieces.

Gonsalves

Gonsalves is in no danger of hitting an innings limit this year.

In fact, with the time he's already missed, they are probably worried that he won't throw enough innings.

I stand corrected on Gonsalves. Perhaps he's relibale starter #3 then. Still not quite enough.
