No he's not terrible but for a first basemen making 23 million a year he's vastly overpaid. He won't even get to 60 RBI this year. I'd rather see Vargas there everyday. Kenny has roughly half the at bats Joe has yet just about the same amount of HR and RBI. Pretty much sums up Joe's production, or lack thereof.

Nothing about Turley impressed me.  He was throwing 92-93, but had no command and the curve didn't appear to me to be anything special.

Mauer: 52 G, 4 HR, 25 RBI, .764 OPS

Vargas: 26 G, 6 HR, 20 RBI, .760 OPS

 

Yeah, he has exactly half the games played that Mauer has.

Why does it matter what he is paid? Were you clammering he was underpaid while still under Twins control at the beginning of his career?
