No kidding about Bellinger... If he was ever mentioned in a trade proposal* they should have faxed over the paperwork immediately. Dude is a stud.

*He was not

How come I have this nagging suspicion that someone out there has just glossed over your *He was not?

A few years from now we'll all be wondering how we passed on a Dozier for Bellinger package, just like all the Johan Santana packages we passed on from the Red Sox.

I'm glad they kept Dozier because De Leon was all they were offered...

That's it... nothing more. Nothing to do with De Leon beyond that. I hope he goes on to become a solid #3 starter like most think he will... I don't wish him ill will.

This exactly. I hope De Leon does well. The Twins didn't find a package they liked. Simple as that.

He pitched (poorly, from the stat line) for TB on Monday.

Got the win!*

*worst stat evar!

Good point. His appearance Monday wasn't even a start. It was his first pro appearance from the bullpen outside of rookie league ball (where starter/reliever designations are largely meaningless anyway).

Another reason not to read too much into his performance in this particular game.

De Leon was never enough. It really doesn't matter how his career ends up to me. I'll just be happy that the the Twins made the right decision with the information that was available at that time.

As exemplified by the Hicks and Meyer threads in this forum, reaffirmation is sought by both those who were for and those who against a given trade/non-trade.  It's simply rare that people move off their original assessments, even in the face of disfavorable facts.   The ole knowing-what-I-knew-at-the-time justification.

That's been acknowledged, I believe, (unofficially) by both teams.

Link?

IIRC that was an assumption by some people due to the fact that only DeLeon went to Tampa...

Which makes it a rumor.

Hunt through the DaveW thread on this. There were tons of links to Heyman, Adams, the LA Times, etc.

Rumors and assumptions.

The only definite thing I remember was this

and this.  If you add them, sounds like it was a 2-1 deal and the Twins buckled.

Once DeLeon went to Tampa then people assumed that it was an 1-1 offer

Didn't dig into DaveW's thread when it was fresh.  Would need a hazmat suit to do that now ;)

You needed a hazmat suit to do it then, too.

Paraphrasing the LA Times report after the trade but basically they said they (Dodgers) didn't hold De Leon in the same stature as several other prospects and weren't going to move any of those guys (Alvarez, Bellinger, Buehler etc) no matter what. So at the end, it was De Leon straight up or De Leon and "garbage" as Steve Adams guessed. I think the coverage by the sources that we had were pretty good so that we have a reasonable understanding of the offer.

indeed.

Nobody knows what was the final offer.

Really.

The rest is garbage.

Someone proclaimed him a potential solid #3 SP eventually. I bet we will find that to be something we would wish we had, in the very near future. There is nothing at all wrong with Brian Dozier. But the big difference is we have replacements for Brian Dozier. They may not be completely MLB ready, but they have a ceiling. But most of the time we can't even find a #5 starter, not to speak of a #3. I don't know how DeLeon will turn out, but I bet he wil be better than ???? that is our current non 5th starter. That's the part of the non Dozier trade that I feel was missed. Not only is Dire Straights a great name for a band, it's a great name for our pitching staff. :)

No, the rest is reasonable assumptions based on what was known and reported.

Not true at all actually.

I'm not in the mood to redig up all of this. But yes, I would like to point out that I wasn't the ONLY person reporting that the offer was quite a bit more than just JDL for Dozier.

More importantly to the topic at hand, De Leon will be fine, I was never really high on his upside, but I also thought Berrios upsides was a #2, sometimes these guys surprise you as they continue to develop. De Leon looks like a safe bet to be a #3, and someone who could end up being even a little better.

If the Twins fall out of the hunt, I think they would be wise to shop guys like Santana (if he is still pitching lights out) to get a package centered around a guy like Alvarez.

Haha. I remember Bellinger popping up in those conversations.

I was on the "if he's offered, you take him despite our need for pitching" side of that discussion.

Bellinger and Urias were pretty much untouchable, the Dodgers were (justifiably) very high on both, and knew Bellinger in particular would contribute this season.

May I count the ways?

To an extent I would agree with you but I didn't want to turn it into a BD rant. 42 HR's last year (30 solo?) was nice. So is a hole in one during the Masters, during a round of 93. :)

In regards to the holes in Brian Dozier's game. Very few players do not have a hole in their game.  If you do not have a hole you are called Mike Trout. Even then Trout got injured, so either there was kryptonite, or even he is not superman

Aaaaand De Leon is back on the DL. This is looking like a good non-trade. He's basically lost the entire season, pitching only 40 innings.

And he was overrated before he became hurt too.

The Dodgers aren't stupid.
