gunnarthor Old-Timey Member Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 Pretty worrisome stuff. It's not too hard to see a new FBI director ending any Trump investigations. Senate and House republicans end investigations as well. Sessions' DOJ continues to roll back voter rights and won't fight against gerrymandered districts giving the GOP a longterm majority ....
PseudoSABR Verified Member Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 I think it backfires. The odds are at all time high for a special prosecution/investigation of some sort.
drjim Provisional Member Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 Lots of sternly worded responses from Republican Senators. Not expecting much action. The beat goes on.
PseudoSABR Verified Member Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 Grand Jury has begun issuing subpoenas related the Russian investigation. I imagine this fact has more to do with Comey's dismissal than Clinton's email investigation.

PseudoSABR Verified Member Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 This guy Claude Taylor might be interesting to follow on twitter, he had the GJ subpoenas story a couple weeks ago, and is now reporting that Trump and Kushner families are moving money offshore. He also suggests Comey will still testify, though in a closed hearing
TheLeviathan Old-Timey Member Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 Well, Claude Taylor also suggested Chaffetz was resigning three weeks ago. So, just a caution on all this. But I do think people like James Comey are the types we need more of, not less of in government.
DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 I don't think comey was very good at his job.But that's not why he lost his job, this is very clearly trump trying to back his way out of this Russia problem. Unfortunately for Trump he is about to find out that dodging this investigation isn't as easy as stiffing a contractor.

His whole twitter feed over the last 24 hours is basically retweets about how CNN didn't credit him, how he knew it first etc It ends up distracting quite a bit on what he is reporting and looks a little childish tbh
D. Hocking Verified Member Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 Comey found out he was fired by seeing it on the news as he was out giving a talk about the FBI in Los Angeles. Trump called him after that. He is the epitome of class..

I thought he blundered the Clinton thing 10 days before the election but I never thought he was crooked. From everything I've read about the guy, he's a principled man. That doesn't mean he's above making a mistake but I don't think he did it out of partisan malice.
gunnarthor Old-Timey Member Posted May 10, 2017 Author Posted May 10, 2017 And now the Russian FM jokes about Comey's firing in the White House.http://www.cnn.com/2017/05/10/politics/trump-fires-comey-latest?lf-content=195591701:lb-post-fc42ccfc18a8dc5b7c4a811d69a522d2@livefyre.com&hubRefSrc=permalink
TheLeviathan Old-Timey Member Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 I thought his explanation about that blunder (Loretta Lynch's shady meeting with Bill) at least made sense. When you manage to irritate both sides this much, it leads me to believe you are either seriously good or incompetent at your job. And I don't think Comey was incompetent.

The response to Trump has taken my already sour view of conservatives and moved it into dumpster fire status. They're no longer conservatives. They're authoritarians. Blatant, unabashed ****ing authoritarians. Though we should have seen it coming. The GOP's movement from governance to opposition party showed signs of this happening. They've moved from wanting to roll back change to refusing to budge on any issue to believing that no matter how they get there, the ends justify the means. Which is basically authoritarianism. They don't care how they win, they just want to win. Voter ID, gerrymandering, and now the court fiascos have shown their true objective.

To be fair I didn't vote for Trump or Hillary, but there are definitely segments of traditionally Republican voters that aren't happy with Trump. I don't really get the outrage over Comey being fired. He had bungled enough on both sides of the aisles that I don't think removal was out of line. I can't help but feel like some of outrage is manufactured (not saying that's what people are doing here), but I am referring to Colbert last night. Depending on whose side did what totally frames whether this is worthy or cheer/praise or booing/shame. I am just over both sides doing that. It's annoying. Again I don't like Trump. The wall is stupid, the EO on religious freedoms was toothless, the budget was awful. If you want to see more conservative viewpoints that are disapproving of Trump look up Josh Jordan (political junkie), Matt Walsh (Blaze writer and Catholic blogger), and Russell Moore (President of Southern Baptist Convention). The first two can be over the top and you likely won't like many of their other opinions, but Dr. Moore is refreshing in this politically charged times. I just wanted to point out not all conservatives are Trump fans the same way I hope not all liberals are fans of everything democrats do no matter the implications or reasoning. It definitely feels lonely in the minority though.

And, so far, they are perfectly happy with the GOP and Trump. Seem totally unconcerned about Russia, or his businesses making money off being POTUS. It really is hard to understand any way other than, he's in the GOP, and he's not that scary Obama guy, whom they irrationally HATE. I was pretty clear, I was talking about MY RW friends, not all RW.
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 It's not that easy. Nor does it magically make those people disappear from the earth.
gunnarthor Old-Timey Member Posted May 10, 2017 Author Posted May 10, 2017 I honestly can't see how anyone can be ok with this Russia thing but maybe people are just ignoring it? I think when/if Flynn starts talking, we might see some more movement against Trump but it's also worth remembering that Trump is historically unpopular with a negative -13% or so on his favorable/unfavorable ratings.

He is their god. And it is downright frightening to see people I have known my entire lives, people whom I viewed as principled and ethical, worship this man, a man with no principles outside of how he can enrich himself without regards to the methods. I have some minimal sympathy for those that voted for him because they hated Hillary or thought Washington needed a shakeup or were so desperate that it was worth a shot, but that rope should have been extremely short. Now our country is alienating allies, buddying up with autocratic strongmen, destroying our moral authority, making our country very unattractive for talented people around the world. And for what? No significant legislation and the Trump family lining their pockets with hundreds of millions to billions of dollars. Just wait until there is an actual external crisis.

jimmer Verified Member Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 Comey got fired due to a recommendation by the asst AG. He works for the guy who had to recuse himself (the AG Sessions) from the trump/russia investigation. Doubtful the asst AG did that without prompting from Sessions (who likely was prompted by Trump). A bunch of subpoenas came out today for that investigation and it was revelead today that Comey had asked for quite a bit more funding for the investigation. Gee, I wonder what the real reasons are for his firing? This is a coverup attempt, plain and simple. How can the AG who recused himself be allowed to even be involved suggesting the investigator of the trump/russia dealing be fired when he had to recuse himself from that investigation. And people are still buying Trump. Oh,and today he met with the Russian Foreign Minister.

I hate to throw them a compliment, but some of the alt-right idiots and Breitbart have been the few loud voices against some of what is happening. Now, they're mad because their warped viewpoint isn't as dominant as they'd hope, but at least they're consistent. I can deal with consistent stupidity, even respect it to a degree. Bu your average social conservative, Fox News watching conservative is largely silent. That needs to change. This isn't the usual partisan principle abandonment, this is on another level.
