Rogue One

Yep. I think I liked it better than The Force Awakens.

It's much grittier than past SW films and it didn't try so hard to be A New Hope, which was the biggest flaw of TFA.

And while TFA stalled out in the third act - primarily the Starkiller battle - Rogue One's final half hour was thrilling.

I havent seen it yet, but i really liked TFA. Not a fan of Felicity Jones one bit, so having her as the lead is unfortunate. Will see it in the next few days.

I also liked TFA but the third act really let me down. I literally yawned during the Starkiller Base scene.

While I'm all in favor of throwing nods to past work in the franchise, I don't need to see the same scenes again shot-for-shot.

But I really enjoyed most of TFA, particularly the new characters... Who should have received even more screen time than they did. As the movie descended into the Han Solo show with the same scenes I saw in A New Hope, the movie started to show cracks. It stopped being unique cinema and became derivative.

As for Rogue One, Felicity Jones is fine. I never had much of an opinion about her one way or the other but she's just fine as Jyn. Neither extraordinary nor bad.

Donnie Yen's "Force Ninja" was probably my favorite character. Or the droid voiced by Alan Tudyk. Both were fantastic and stole the show whenever on-screen.

Before watching Rogue One, I highly suggest watching A New Hope again. The movie is littered with throwbacks to A New Hope but they're subtle nods that will be lost on most movie-goers.

Pay particular attention to pilot call signs during the Death Star battle.

Is Porkins alive in this one?!

Seriously, naming the fat pilot Porkins is kind of a big clue Lucas' best name ideas had already been used. We're lucky Lando was not named based off of a particular physical characteristic.

Your facebook comments gave it a meh feel...  Just saying...  Though I had a coworker that said it was as good as Empire Strikes Back.  Haven't seen it yet... so....

Given that in A New Hope, Vader is referenced as being the last of an ancient religion, I find it odd that there's a ton of force references in here.  If anything, I'd have steered clear of that...

It makes sense in the context of the film. There are references to the Force but no Jedi (obviously). There is one character who straddles the line, though... And he's one of the best characters in the film. I won't say more but there's one scene near the end that I absolutely loved... It wasn't so much about a person using the Force as the Force using a person.

And given the prophesy theme from the prequels (and possible TFA depending how Ep VIII shakes out), the scene fits. The Force seems to have a will of its own and is one of the most clever deus ex machinas created in modern storytelling. It can juke and weave to fit most anything you want to do in a story.

I have a feeling that if I don't see it tonight I won't be seeing it due to the crazy schedule that is coming up.

3D, or not 3D,  THAT is the question.-Hamlet

IMO... 3-D kills a movie. It's not the same. I don't see movies with my best friend because of this.

Call me old fashioned. (:

I embrace almost all technology and give it a fair shot.

With that said, I despise 3D unless there's something about the movie where 3D enhances the experience (Hugo was one of those experiences for me).

I see pretty much all blockbusters in regular ol' 2D. If someone tells me it's amazing in 3D, I'll consider a second viewing in that format.

I've only seen this one in 2D but have heard good things about 3D version:

Well they kind of already stepped all over that one when they later made the actual Emperor of the entire galaxy also a member of the same religion. The guy was treated as pretty infallible as far as I remember, but everyone thought his beliefs were crazy?

I want to take my kid, but he's only 6. Is it too dark for him? He was good with The Force Awakens.

Also I'd just like to share that he thinks the ending of Jedi is sad because Vader dies (spoiler alert). Not sad because Vader found retribution, but because according to him, Vader's red lightsaber is undeniably the coolest one.

In Rogue One, Chirrut said there are no more Jedi. Only Bail Organa, Leia and Mon Mothma know different.

During the beginning of ANH, the bad guys dont know that Obi-Wan exists and never find out Yoda does.

So when Tarkin says to Darth Vader that he is the last of a dying relgion, he just doesnt know that what he's saying isnt true.

And, obviously, the emperor wasnt a Jedi.

It's darker than TFA, for sure... Lots of people die. Very little blood, though.

As for Vader's "religion", two things:

1. The line likely refers to the Jedi, which are a distinct order (religion) from the Sith. Vader was a Jedi, Palpatine was only a Sith. Tarkin is one of the only people in the universe who figured out that Vader was actually Anakin Skywalker (it's explained in the new canon books and the Clone Wars series). Tarkin was one of the few people who met and worked with both Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader extensively. It makes sense he pieced together the true identity of Vader.

2. Few knew the Emperor was Sith outside of Vader, Kenobi, and Yoda. He kept that fact hidden from the population both as Supreme Chancellor and as Emperor. As far as Tarkin knew, the Emperor was just a jacked up looking dude who really liked black. Palpatine never used his power publicly and even after the fight with Mace Windu, he didn't unveil he was a Force user.

Loved it. The end was awesome. I hope they do another prequel before the last movie. I would love to see a rise of the empire type movie. One where we really learn to hate Vader and the empire. That would be awesome.

So it seems that a large majority LOVE IT but I am seeing several people (whose opinions I respect) giving it a shoulder shrug and saying not that great (5/10 type). I still have no idea when I will see it.

It's part of the old expanded universe and no longer canon but the book Darth Plagueis is one of my favorite Star Wars books of all time. It's all about Palpatine's training as a Sith and his rise to Supreme Chancellor.

Really, really, good movie. The least star wars of them, and top two or three star wars movie.

I hope to see many more "not Star Wars" movies from Disney. Some of my favorite stories in the Star Wars universe have been genre-mashes that took a very different approach to the universe.

Which makes sense, as George Lucas built one of the richest universes in which to play. You can go almost any direction with Star Wars: the novel Kenobi was a spaghetti western and the novel Death Troopers was a horror story.

Rogue One is basically what I wanted to see: a different take on the theme laid out in Battlefront: Twilight Company... Basically, a ground-level war story with all the ugliness and frustration that goes with it.

Saw it tonight with the family who are in town. It was filled with action but I somehow didn't find it terribly involving.
