Rogue One

Before watching Rogue One, I highly suggest watching A New Hope again. The movie is littered with throwbacks to A New Hope but they're subtle nods that will be lost on most movie-goers.

Pay particular attention to pilot call signs during the Death Star battle.

Lots of hidden easter eggs.  I liked how they ran into random characters from Mos Eisley.

I'm also wondering why they didn't use Ion torpedos more in 4-6.  The ion canon took out a star destroyer in empire, but those were a pretty wicked and simple ways to disable a rather large starship.

It makes sense in the context of the film. There are references to the Force but no Jedi (obviously). There is one character who straddles the line, though... And he's one of the best characters in the film. I won't say more but there's one scene near the end that I absolutely loved... It wasn't so much about a person using the Force as the Force using a person.

And given the prophesy theme from the prequels (and possible TFA depending how Ep VIII shakes out), the scene fits. The Force seems to have a will of its own and is one of the most clever deus ex machinas created in modern storytelling. It can juke and weave to fit most anything you want to do in a story.

after watching it, I will agree that they did a pretty good job for the most part of leaving the Jedi dead.  There was still (in my opinion) way too much force reference at a time when it was associated with an ancient and dead religion...

That said, I lived the force ninja...  very good character.

My sons think the scene when Vader basically destroys a room/tunnel full of enemies might be one of the best Force scenes in all the movies. Hard to argue, actually.

I disagree there were too many references. We make references to ancient / dead religions all the time still today.....

Well they kind of already stepped all over that one when they later made the actual Emperor of the entire galaxy also a member of the same religion. The guy was treated as pretty infallible as far as I remember, but everyone thought his beliefs were crazy?

I want to take my kid, but he's only 6. Is it too dark for him? He was good with The Force Awakens.

Also I'd just like to share that he thinks the ending of Jedi is sad because Vader dies (spoiler alert). Not sad because Vader found retribution, but because according to him, Vader's red lightsaber is undeniably the coolest one.

Well, I took my 12 year old son to see it this weekend.  I wasn't worried about that at all, but I'd be lying to you if I said there weren't some dark moments that I think would be difficult for a 6 year old.  Lots of characters die. It is after all, a story of the "many Bothan spies" which died getting the plans to the death star... now that said, speaking of things that I was a bit disappointed in, they really didn't work the Bothan aspect of it at all into Rogue 1.

IMO... 3-D kills a movie. It's not the same. I don't see movies with my best friend because of this.

Call me old fashioned. (:

3-D is really cool the first time you see it... after that... not so much.

Loved it. The end was awesome. I hope they do another prequel before the last movie. I would love to see a rise of the empire type movie. One where we really learn to hate Vader and the empire. That would be awesome.

That could be a trilogy all on its own... but do we really want any more Star Wars movies with Hayden Christensen in them again?

Princess Leia passed away

Yeah ... it's was mentioned in the celebrity death pool thread. Kind of like all the Dozier trade threads ... pick a thread, any thread ...

The Bothans were the second Death Star but yeah, lots of Rebels die chasing the plans of the Death Star(s).

It was a great scene. We never got to see Vader go into beat down mode in any of the other movies.

I finally saw it yesterday afternoon. Got to say the very end was a little more poignant considering the news from the morning.

I read a few reviews that I had saved and there was strong emphasis on the Vader part on the end. I think I was a little numb from the preceding events that I didn't fully appreciate how badass that scene was. I think I need to watch it again just for that. But wow, that was a Star Wars movie unlike any other. And in a good way, got my to think about war differently.

Point taken... I got my movies mixed up.  I hereby rescind my geek card.
