So let's say the Twins are trading Brian Dozier

So the Twins are trading Brian Dozier. Everyone knows it. What do you see as a deal that could happen?

Here is my thought on a potential deal. Please rip it to shreds all you want.

Dozier to the Dodgers for 4 players...

1) Jose De Leon, MLB #33 prospect, Dodgers #2 prospect. Would be in our rotation day 1 next year.

2) Austin Barnes, MLB's #8 catcher prospect, 26 in December. Would be one of our major league catchers on opening day, hopefully along with a solid defensive first free agent or other acquisition.

3) Yusniel Diaz, MLB's #98 prospect and the Dodger's #6 prospect. Will turn 20 in October. Had a good year at High A last year, and would more than likely begin the year in AA. Above average speed, arm and defense and should be able to hit as well, although not for much power.

4) Player to be named, which at some point turns in to Gavin Lux. He was the Dodgers 1st round pick last year, and he is from Kenosha, WI. Should be able to stay at short.

What do you think? Is this too much? Not enough? Is it a deal you would be ok with trading Dozier?

Probably too much. Take out the player to be named, and it might be reasonable....but I just don't know what to expect.

I would like to know which team specifically is looking to upgrade at second base. Can anyone supply this information? Perhaps here or on a separate thread.

Regarding the Dodgers, Chase Utley turns 39 in December, and he hasn't been a star offense player since 2009 when he was 30, and apparently his defense has slipped below average this year as well, and of course he is a free agent at the end of this - probably things everyone knew but me!

Well, it's also interesting to note that Dozier will turn 30 in May of 2017, so a GM has to wonder when his decline begins.

It's in the right neighborhood.  Maybe drop the PTBNL.  I'd also rather get a second pitcher than Diaz or Barnes.

I wonder if the Twins might instead look to nab some established vets rather than rolling the dice on the Dodgers equivalent to Berrios.  If the Twins could get a couple legit middle of the rotation starters, sort of like Ervin Santana, the pitching staff looks a lot better right away.  I'm not sure what teams have those kind of guys available to trade and/or are looking for help at second base though.

We'll never know which teams feel that Dozier is an upgrade to their current situation, but IMO....

The Dodgers for reasons you stated. Utley is at the end of the road, and Kendrick is a guy.

The Mets have Neil Walker coming off a career year and about to be a FA. Do they let him walk like they did with Murphy? They're also the most pitching rich team in the MLB.... Their #7 is equivalent to the Twins' #2.

The Giants have the 3rd fewest HRs in the MLB. Joe Panik's done alright, but perhaps they're looking for some pop in their lineup.

The Yankees may look to reload now that Texiera and A Rod's contracts are off the books. Starlin Castro is nothing special. And recently reloaded their farm system. Who knows if they're going to rebuild from within or try to buy their way back into contention.

A total wildcard who's just looking to get back to relevancy like the Phillies?

De Leon has seen a lot of press.  Not sure that he will be available.

I think that the Yankees might be a better partner.

Dozier for:

RHP Chance Adams, LHP Nestor Cortes and C Kyle Higashioka

Nobody they cannot part with or their fanbase will scream, but I really like all 3 at this point (and more than I like De Leon, who might be Phil Hughes 2.0.)

Dozier for Vincent Velasquez and Jorge Alfaro?

I don't know if the Phillies would be willing to give that much up.

How about Dozier and Gonsalves for Dee Gordon and Jose Fernandez?

Dozier and Gonsalves would not be enough for Fernandez by himself.  Also, the Marlins are competing. And makes no sense for a competing team to get rid of an ace to get a second baseman.

Fernandez' price tag will probably start with Berrios and Buxton and would need a couple more high end prospects (I am not talking Walker) to make it happen...

Every team has a 2B man. Dozier screams Offense. That's what people are seeking in a trade for Dozier. How many teams have an excess of offense? Very few. How many are struggling to score?--several. Especially those that "the window is closing". Also, for some that the window could be opening. Especially those teams that spend. It won't be a problem to find teams willing to trade--it's getting the right package.

The right package? Ah, what are the Twins plans? How patient will the Twins be with said "package"? That will be decided later. Dozier may only yield an established, quality, SP and a low-level prospect if the Twins are impatient for results. Or, he might fetch a basket of minor league players if the Twins are willing to be patient. Are the Twins willing to pay Dozier the 2019 equivalent of Mauer's contract? Will Dozier even accept it? He will receive substantial interest when he becomes a free agent. The Twins may be forced to trade him just like they were forced to trade Johan. I am convinced that the Twins would have received a lot more for Johan if he was trade before the '07 season that before the '08 season. I am just as convinced that trading Dozier before next season will yield more than before the '18 season.

I could see that. But why wouldn't the Twins ask for a James Kaprielian from the Yankees? I like what I see from the other players though. Thanks!

I'd call each of these teams with this primary target and work from there:

Cards: Alex Reyes

Pirates: Tyler Glasnow

Mets: Ahmed Rosario

Among others of course, but the key is aim high with the centerpiece.

Sounds like Kenta Maeda, Hyun-Jin Ryu, or Scott Kazmir would be what you'd look for in a potential trade with the Dodgers.

Maeda would be a great upgrade. After that, I would think a new regime would want to go younger, no? Would the Dodgers even consider Maeda? Don't they have trouble (like everyone) holding onto quality starting pitching?

Outside of Brett Anderson, I believe all of the Dodger starters are under contract for next year.  If you want the deal why not aim high and go for Urias and not Deleon(I do not believe in him enough).

Dozier's contract the next 2 years is not excessive so he should be able to bring a very good return.  If you don't get it this year hang onto him and hope he has another great year and trade him for a bucketful at midseason.

I think the centerpiece has to be a pitcher, so Rosario wouldn't be ideal. And the control issues for Reyes and Glasnow are big concerns. That would be an extremely high risk/high reward trade.

I've got to think you'd want a higher ceiling starter like Justus Sheffield.  Just my 2 cents.

Wouldn't most pitching prospects be high risk/high reward? If not these guys, what type of pitcher should be targeted?

Getting Tyler Glasnow would worry me. I can't help but see the similarities between him and Alex Meyer.

Not sure what to say there.  Glasnow has had more major league success than Meyer ever had, and he's 23.

I'd trade Dozier to the pirates if they were willing to offer up Glasnow as the center piece, and I wouldn't think twice about it.

The idea of moving Dozier to third to make room for Polanco has been brought up briefly in the past. This seems unlikely but could team pick him up to play 3rd?

At this point forget prospects. We've got plenty. Get the best mlb starter you can with team control. Throw in anybody not named berrios Buxton Sano or Kepler to get it done.
