It's absurd how poorly the Twins handled him.

 

For his sake, I hope he performs well, he deserves a legit shot. Something the Twins in the midst of their 500 losses over 5 seasons couldn't find somehow....

I don't think he ends up being a #2 type, or even very good as a starter, but I hope he does well.

I mean he has the size and the stuff to make it as a starter, I think if he somehow fails at that he can become a very awesome 8th/9th inning guy. Either way, dumb to include him in that trade.

They easily could have just cut (or traded) Nolasco after this season anyways.

It was stupid as all hell to give up an asset to "get rid" of Nolasco, it makes no sense for a rebuilding team like the Twins to do that garbage.

They would have been better served giving up a guy like Grossman in the trade then a guy like Meyer who could have been a part of the future.

I actually believed Meyer had shoulder problems. Joke's on me (again).

I have no idea if Meyer makes it or not, either as a reliever or starter. But I am pretty sure of one thing. If he does, the blame is clearly on the FO, and I might add the coaching staffs. The reason I am so specific, is that Alex Meyer wasn't some fly below the radar guy. He was a highly visible piece of a big trade. And if in five years they can't get him tuned up, and LA can in 3 months? The juries still out, but even if it takes LA into the end of next year to get a serviceable pitcher out of him.............. A small note on negativity here. It doesn't come from Alex Meyer, or Nolasco, or Rosario, or the plethora of AAAA players paraded through here in the last few years. It comes from the sum of all those parts. Any team can screw up an Alex Meyer. But few can do it with such consistency.

If the new GM doesn't realize that the pitching development part of the Twins minor leagues needs a total overhaul he was the wrong guy to hire.

It'll be a good test. I've long believed that one of the biggest problems with the Twins is that management makes things more stressful, instead of helping players find a comfort zone. If Meyer does well with the Angels, who actually have not had a great environment for several years, that will say something.

 

Oh, and yes, the Twins would have been better off simply cutting Nolasco.

In my medical opinion, the shoulder issue was caused by "they call me up and sit me in the bullpen for around 10 days" with a hint of "oh good, I get to start - wait, what do you mean you're pulling me in the 3rd inning?" Medically speaking.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe Meyer's gem was 4 innings. No walks, 2 hits, 6 strikeouts. A good outing

but definitive sss. Btw - Nolasco pitched a complete game 4 hit shutout a couple of nights ago.

 

Anyways - time will tell. One thought - now that folks are clamoring to trade Dozier for pitching. Trading a solid major league

position player for a pitching prospect is truly high risk. Even the best pitching prospects, like Meyer (or Bundy or Wheeler or Berrios....)

are one pitch away from total system failure. You have to develop your own.

He looked awesome.  First pitch 98, second pitch 99.  Never in any kind of trouble and had maybe one pitch that was a bit wild.

I am routing for him but I don't think Meyer is going to be a dependable starter unless he suddenly finds a lot more consistency in his delivery.  The stuff is there for sure but his release point is all over the place and he throws with such effort.  He could however have a bright future as a late inning guy.  He is in a better place to succeed now, I don't think this Twins organization has any idea how to develop a pitcher like him.
