A Look at the Possible Sept. Call-Ups

Out of that group, I'd like to see Palka and Reed. Maybe Baxendale too. D Santana is proving there's plenty of opportunity to play in the OF. Why not give Palka the chance?

The only person I would be disappointed if they got the call is Mujica. I'd prefer giving the opportunities to young guys the whole month of September over 10 year MLB vets.

I get it, but they also can't keep throwing guys like Pressly every other day either.

I’d really like to see Baxendale, Garver, Reed and Vargas.

I suppose we can see if they will let Buxton swing in MLB like he does in AAA. They probably have to ‘fix’ something though, so it could just be a bunch of strikeouts again.

It would also be fun to see Wheeler and Palka.

I wonder if they won't add Wheeler to start in Cleveland, like Seth said on Twitter.

Okay. The Twins are sitting at one free 40-man spot. They can add Park to the 25-man September 1 and then put him on the 60-day, freeing up a second spot.

Those two spots should go to Beresford and Wheeler. Wheeler, because we do have to see if he is better than Dean and Albers. Beresford, to reward him for his service to the team and the possibility that you can resign him for depth come 2017.

Of course, Buxton will return. Murphy will get a call. Vargas will be back up. Those are givens. Berrios and Duffey will return. I would also like to see Walker brought up to sit on the bench and get the "major league experience" to see if it hungers him for the of-season.

Unless the Twins get rid of Suzuki (which will happen before September 1st to Cleveland, we won't see Garver. I almost expect that the Twins will send him to Arizona to work exclusively as a catcher before adding him to the 40-man in the offseason. No need to add Stewart, Gonsalves, Palka or others at this point, although the current roster does have lots of deadwood - Albers, Dufffey, Dean, Milone, Bosher, possibly O'Rourke. There is no need to keep Centeno on the 40-man. Of course, if you add Beresford and Wheeler to go with Wimmers, and none produce accordingly, you don't have ti keep them, either. You have Plouffe and Santiago on the bubble -- both of whom may be left to the new GM for decision-making but both overpaid in their final arbitration year. Better to cut them loose now, and then able to resign them in the off-season when another team passes on them - or so I think. But what do I really know.

I would explore doing something, anything, with Park. He has potential to hit a lot of homes runs, but creates a logjam until Mauer disappears in two years...and you need to play Park for what, three years? I would rather find time in the DH for Palka, Walker, Sano, Vargas or even Mauer.

I like Plouffe. Always have, always will.  But I jsut don't see committing the funds to keep him. We have an outfield. We have alternatives at third base. We can't play him at first or DH with the current mess. And he might cost upwards of $9-10 million.

Really well done there, Rosterman.

The other thing that intrigues me about a new GM is we'll find out really fast how they feel about Landa, Melotakis and Rosario -- none of whom *feel* all that close to MLB ready. I mean, maybe Melotakis is -- he came off the DL today -- but .....meh.

Good point!  Park is getting a big league salary regardless, and service time doesn't matter for him, so I would hope that they do this, almost regardless of who they call up.

BW, I thought I heard Antony say he would bring up Walker over Palka on Sunday, being they were so similar.

I know I'd seen/heard it'll probably be one or the other but not both.

Walker is another guy we'll find out about quickly as far as the "new" regime.

But I'd guess the 40-man status gives him the leg up for sure.

I'd like to see Wheeler, Garver, Vargas, Baxendale, and probably Palka.  I'd leave Buxton in AAA until their season is over, then bring him up and play him every day for the rest of the way.

I think they'll leave everyone down there until the season is over. At the very least, until they're eliminated. But it's already a roster playing short talent-wise, so I doubt they'd want to mess with it much until the season is formally over.

I'd think any pitchers that they're interested in would be up right away but position players would likely be called up later as you said.  Buxton would be in that conversation too I think, but I'd prefer to keep him down until their season is over.

Rosario had some pretty good results in the pen, before a tough debut at AA.  Landa's numbers are definitely "meh" for the FSL.

Since his all-star break, Melotakis has 22 K's in only 12.1 IP.  That's encouraging, even if the other stats are "meh".  I wonder if they will shut him down when the minor league season ends, though.

Ironically, I agree with me. For those that didn't see it on Twitter, I'd guess that Albers is working long relief in Toronto, then get DFAd, and Wheeler come up to start Monday or Tuesday.

It'll come down to numbers. Trading Suzuki will make it more likely for Garver. I'd like to see Wheeler and Baxendale.

Hard to find a lot of at bats for Palka or Walker, but both deserving of a look. Palka needs to be added to the 40 man anyway.

Reed does not have to be added, so it makes little sense to bring him up for September.

Melotakis just came off the Disabled List today, and has been on a couple of times already this year. He got through the year healthy, so I think he'll be shut down. That's just smart.

Landa throws 100, but he's been on the DL for 3+ weeks now.

Garver has to be put on the 40 man this off season, I believe. If he's not called up, I don't understand the Twins' FO at all, assuming he's healthy.

I'm not sure I care one way or the other about the rest at this point. I don't think AB Walker is a MLB player, but if they want to call him up, whatevs.

Maybe, but you have to be careful. Even if you want a look at Gonsalves, you have to protect 40-man flexibility heading into a tricky offseason.

Agreed.  I was mainly referring to pitchers already on the 40 man, but then I realized that the ones they're likely most interested in probably aren't on it.  That being said, there is plenty of low hanging fruit on the 40 man.

The value in learning or development in September is minimal and probably lost by spring training. What did we learn about Parmelee or Pinto? It would be foolish to add someone to the 40 (if they wouldn't need to be added this winter) thinking it is possible to learn something about next year.

They can add some pitchers. They might bring back some of the guys who struggled and were sent down. Maybe they can end on a high note. They can reward some long time minor leaguers.

The decisions they make about these call ups will not shift the long term of this franchise.

ABW - 38.4% K rate & 8.6 BB rate

(leads AAA IL in HRs - 5th consecutive year leading league in HRs)

1st time in MN Twins History

Palka - 36.8% K rate & 8.9 BB rate

(3rd in Minors in HRs thru 2 levels)

Very Similar in their AAA stat lines.

Palka has had a much better overall season though. He's got an .879 OPS compared to Walker's .795.

If they decide to give Walker a look because of the 40 man situation instead of Palka, I'm not going to be too upset about it. Maybe he'll have the classic on fire month that we've seen in recent Septembers.

What do we do with Walker. Has he been passed by Palka? Does he have value as an add-on for a trade? You can waiver him out. Like Arcia, someone will grab him, even if he just becomes, say, the next Michael Restovich. I start to think that Palka and Walker may be the same decision the Twins had to make in the past with, say, Cuddyer and Restovich. Yes, there is no position for Walker in September, yet he won't go to the fall league (been there, done that). There is actually no position for Walker or Palka in Minnesota next season (baring some trades). Both will start at Rochester next season and one or the other MIGHT be up here in 2018 as the fourth outfielder, bench guy with a chance for a fulltime job in 2019. But I say give Walker a taste to he works extra hard off-season and next year at AAA knowing the major league dream is just around the corner.

I think Palka is an excellent prospect as well, but i just don't get why he has passed Walker so easily in everyone's mind?
