Any Updates on Burdi

Nobody will talk about Burdi for some reason, so I assume we'll hear about him having some sort of major surgery around the start of next season and then see him return to game action mid-2018. Whenever he does come back he still needs to find success pitching above A ball, so he could be a year away even after that. At this point I'd forget all about him when making future plans for the MLB bullpen and if he has a resurgence you can deal with the logjam later. Wonderful problem to have.

 

In better news, his draft buddy Jake Reed seems to be righting the ship at AA finally. ERA is 1.80 for July. June looks like he had bad luck with a 4.15 ERA but only gave up a .186 batting average and had a 0.98 WHIP. The walks are coming down finally. Maybe we'll see him next year after all, I was basically writing him off for MLB help anytime soon as well. Hopefully he keeps it up.

How's that drafting reliever strategy turning out? It's hard to imagine that any front office could fail as miserably at nearly every aspect as the Twins have.

At least it's nice to see that Zack Jones is throwing well at Chatanooga.  I don't understand why info on Burdi and Meyer is so far underground, though.

I normally don't get too worked up about draft picks since I'm not a scout. But I called this when they drafted him.

Agreed.  Jones is looking like an easy 40-man add this winter, or obvious Rule 5 pick if left unprotected again.  If we have any concern about him that we want to address before that decision, we should probably challenge him with a AAA and/or MLB promotion soon.

I am, a little.  He throws hard so I suppose that's a concern but I didn't think he was overly injury prone when we drafted him.

One of the top tasks for a new front office must be to replace the medical program (along with analytics, psychology, hitting development, draft strategy, etc.).

He's around the complex in Fort Myers right now, I see him every weekend watching the GCL games on the Twins' backfields.  He's not the most talkative guy but when I have talked to  him he has said he is on a "throwing program" if that means anything to you.  But I haven't seen him in anything but street clothes the last few weekends.

What's there to say? They're both in Ft. Myers rehabbing. There just aren't frequent updates when there is little or nothing to update.

Thanks.  Sounds like both injuries were more serious than we had previously heard.  Any insight in what the problems are?

Sometimes it has to play out before really knowing how serious something is. Meyer's shoulder has been evaluated a few times. Burdi's bone bruise on his elbow is obviously a very painful thing. In both cases, resting it before throwing is what needs to be done, and there are times when progress continues, and then there are times when there are setbacks. Meyer and Burdi are both arms that they won't and shouldn't mess with.

Well I'd say that if Burdi is really in jeopardy of missing nearly an entire season because of a bruise, then we probably shouldn't count on him ever staying healthy for an extended period of time.

 

EDIT:

OK, I'm an idiot. This is why I shouldn't play a doctor. Apparently these bone bruises can can be pretty severe.

They really should find a new name for this, IMO.
