Watching on the desktop- looked like Verlander was going to hit Ausmus if he took him out.

Tigers announcers speculating that they will take Verlander out so he doesn't have to face Mauer.  Long time since I heard that.

For his career, Joe has owned Verlander. of course, not sure how that has been recently.

I can't wait until women are in MLB so we can comment during game threads about wanting to watch their husbands instead. Or openly gay male players and watching their spouses, too. ;)

They pitched in two different leagues.  They weren't competing against each other for an award that until recently was dependent so much on win totals (Bartolo over Santana in 2005) 

 

Mussina had a career ERA+ (5 points higher), better K/9 by almost 2Ks (even though he faced DHs), better BB/9, much better WHIP, much better FIP.  I can't think of one thing I'd say Glavine was better at other than his narrative of being one of the big 3.

 

Only thing Glavine did better was last 4 more years.

No doubt that wins and awards play into this quite a bit.  All-Star appearances too.  Glavine has the 2 Cy Young's and twice the number of ASG appearances.  Glavine lead the NL in wins 5 times to Mussina's 1 despite playing for the Yankees during their absurd run.  Glavine had another 35 wins, getting to that magical 300 mark that Mussina didn't get to.

Guess who had the better winning %? And more WAR?  In fact, Mussina is about 10 WAR higher than the AVERAGE HOF starting pitchers.

 

Glavine was more popular for sure and the media loved him as part of the big three, but he wasn't better by any pitching number that actually looks at pitcher performance.

Mussina had the higher winning % as well.  Mussina had the benefit of playing with some offensive juggernaut's that Glavine didn't resulting in more wins.  That goes back to the voting flaws that we've touched on.

Glavine was better at getting pitches 9 inches off the plate called a strike......

For better or for worse, popularity plays into the voting more than it should.  I mean, if there were hold outs that didn't vote for any of the original HoF class, it's clearly a system that has some flaws.  It's still better than football though.

Sano barely missed the pitch that he fouled off, right before he froze on strike three.

One of the most over-rated pitchers in my lifetime. While Mussina is vastly under-rated.
