Thoughts on the Twins New Red Alternates

Those were the "Turn Ahead the Clock" jerseys from 1999.

I will say this, I think the had one of the better versions of that jersey.  Other teams had waaaaay worse designs.

The infamous Butch Huskey game.

Also the same day Dan Monson was named Gophers basketball coach as if the uniforms didn't ruin everyone's day already.

I never heard of Kasota Gold until now. I googled "kasota gold" and then clicked Images and what comes up? Twins uniforms.

I infer from this that the term has just been invented by marketers wearing ties cutting off clear circulation to their throats.

Or am I wrong? I have been wrong before.

I think of the Twins as a blue team, not red. Never cared for the red hats, and don't really like these either.

Kind of like the Wild's red jerseys, don't like those much either.

I like the solid-red hat. I was afraid they'd go two-tone with a blue bill--an oft-used faux pas in my opinion.

But, I hate when pants and jersey don't match, and the gold doesn't have the same pop on a red backdrop as it does with the whites.

Yep.  Looks like a BP jersey.   Pffft.

It almost looks like they intentionally illuminated the right side of Mauer to disguise how plain and ugly the rest of the jersey is. Couldn't agree more that it looks like a BP jersey.

"Booo. Different shirt. Booo."

Nah, they're okay. The gold is still a little weird for me. But they didn't mess with the font. As far as alternate jerseys go, I think this one accomplishes most of what is cool about an alternate jersey: it features the secondary color and lesser-used (but still traditional) logo more prominently. I would never want the Twins to use red jerseys as the standard, but red is one of the traditional colors, so I don't have a problem with it being featured in an alternate- even though lots of teams have red (lots of teams have dark blue too- and everybody has the powder blue throwbacks- which I think are great). It's also cool to see the TC logo featured on the jersey- probably what makes it look like a BP jersey (they used to have the dark blue pullover BP jerseys with the TC logo in the 90s- wouldn't mind seeing those reappear). The only thing I would change about the jersey is I'd make it a pullover with the two buttons on top. But overall, I think they were pretty successful in coming up with something new and interesting without messing with traditional elements.

Also, jerseys do matter in that they are part of the art and beauty of the game. I would compare it to a quality chef plating his/her dish. Is the presentation as important as how it tastes? No, but it definitely matters. Personally, if a team has really bad uniforms, it makes it harder to watch. The Timberwolves, for example, have some of the most exciting young players in the league, but between the black t-shirts with the zigzags and hideous multicolored WNBA-looking tank tops that look like they were assembled from scraps, it's embarrassing (missing ten free throws and loosing by three is also embarrassing).

Remind me.....isn't there some ritual of the Twins starting pitcher getting to pick the jersey color on the day he starts? Please elaborate.

I watch for the baseball too, but there are just some jerseys that make the game difficult to watch.

Example:

Indifference can have some very negative consequences when it comes to jerseys.

The most memorable thing about that jersey is that was the game Butch Husky ran into the Metrodome LF wall on a HR that was hit 5 rows deep

I think the term Kasota gold comes from Kasota Ave., which is on the (extremely) vague border between Minneapolis and Saint Paul, like Highway 280. Where East Hennepin turns into Larpenteur (apologies to Lauderdale).

So it's an attempt to include both cities.

Actually the term Kasota gold comes from the Kasota Limestone that is used on the facade throughout the stadium.  The limestone is found in southern MN and gets it's name from Kasota County where it has been quarried.

Hey thanks! Good to know.

Well, you're close. There's no Kasota County but there is a small town named Kasota near where the limestone was first quarried. Calling the gold on the unis Kasota Gold is just the brainchild of some marketing guru. Or maybe it was one of the Target Field janitors who thought of it for all I know.

Except for designated jersey dates, such as Friday home games some years, or Saturday home games other years.

End of elaboration.

I was pretty lukewarm on the new red jerseys when they were introduced. I don't mind them putting out something new in an alternate jersey every year to generate some buzz and additional jersey sales. It's a business and nobody is forcing anyone to buy one. As a photographer who is really bad at immediately tagging all of my pictures, I do prefer a front numeral to help me remember the names of all the guys in the pictures I take, but otherwise it was fine, but not exciting to me.

I do think, though, that having all the players, MLB and minor league, at Twinsfest wearing the new jersey was a really good idea by someone in the organization. The more I saw it on the players, the more I liked the red jersey and I even like the gold in the piping.

As someone else mentioned, the idea of a Kasota Gold jersey is intriguing. I won't be a bit surprised to see that in the next couple of years.

You know what happened to guys in red shirts on Star Trek don't you?
