Pardon My Dinger Verified Member Posted December 8, 2015 Posted December 8, 2015 I would give up Buxton straight up for Fernandez, but to say you would rather give up Buxton instead of Berrios is just perplexing, I'm not so sure it's people are so down on Buxton as it's people are just assuming Berrios is some future ace, which is setting expectations way too high IMO.Not low on buck. In fact, pretty high. He's one of the few guys I think they'd be interested in. But with the of prospects we have, to give up one for a franchise changing sp? Easy decision for me.
Jham Verified Member Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 Realistically, the Twins are never going to sign an ace. Too much money for too many years. However, you can avoid the commitment of dollars and years by trading for aces. Worked pretty darn well for the Royals. In fact, their ability to do so, might ultimately drive the price of starting pitching down at which point the price of prospects goes up until it costs too many prospects to get an ace at which point signing one becomes attractive again. Otherwise you have to raise an ace, which the Twins haven't done. For that reason, I give up a lot. I'd be shopping Rosario and Duffey pretty hard in this case given their ceilings and current perception through the league. I'd be easily talked into Kepler, Berrios, or Buxton. All have pretty large questions marks for how high they're ranked.
Thrylos Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 Berrios and Kepler are not enough. And why would Miami want Kepler with you know whom in his position there? You got to see who the other team has to figure out whether there is a match or not. They have Marcel Ozuna at CF, so I don't think that they even want Buxton. 3B is an issue (they have Prado a UT guy play there), but Sano should be a no go. So you are looking for someone like Plouffe who is a match, and 3 young arms like Berrios, Stewart and Chargois.Would you do it? I would...
Don Walcott Verified Member Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 Schoenfeld had the Twins as #5 possibility of being the mystery team, and said this about our trade prospects for Fernandez: "Minnesota Twins. No, they're not going to trade Miguel Sano or Byron Buxton, which means the Marlins would want pitcher Jose Berrios, who had a 2.87 ERA between Double-A and Triple-A with more than a strikeout per inning, and outfielder/first baseman Max Kepler, he of the .416 OBP in Double-A. The Twins could also include Trevor Plouffe, allowing the Marlins to shop Martin Prado or move him to left field. Sano then slides into his natural position of third base instead of being forced into the outfield. The Twins haven't made a splashy trade or free-agent signing in years. Maybe it's time." If Berrios, Kepler and Plouffe could get us Fernandez, that would be awesome. Though I'm not sure why the Marlins would want to increase their payroll as part of the deal.
Hrbowski Verified Member Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 Look, this is not going to happen, and if it does TR will have lost his mind, as it will take Buxton, Sano, and two other talented young players (Berrios, Rosario etc.)

nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 Um no. It would not take Buxton+Sano+Berrios+RosarioWell reports are that to get him, the Dodgers were being required to give up Seagar, Urias, Pederson plus two more prospects, so that Twins package might be light.

Baseball Bat Provisional Member Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 I'm no journalist, but I'm guessing this is more of a bait into reading an article more than anything else. First off, it has been stated that the Marlins will not trade Fernandez. MLB Network turned this into "The Marlins will deal him if an offer blows them away", which I get but I still feel this is completely speculative and amateur at best. Ken Rosenthal continues to mention in his tweets that the only reason the Marlins listen is in case someone offers way too much in desperation. My theory is that there were three teams that made initial contact on Fernandez and then they heard about an asking price of Seager (#2 overall prospect) and Urias (#4 overall prospect), Pederson (All-Star with 40 HR potential), and two other prospects (Initial reports of what the Marlins were asking from the Dodgers, 5 players total), and thus all three teams walked away. There are few major league teams that even have those types of young assets, much less be willing to offer them. Heck it is the winter meetings, every time a manager takes a piss you can go to MLB Network and find out about it. There is a reason why we don't hear any solid offers for Fernandez. I would actually applaud the Marlins on this because they are actually smart enough to create a demand for Fernandez. Moving on, after those three initial inquiries, one "mystery team" checks in. Perfect for espn.com as they get to make a list of potential teams that could be in the running (as it is there job to do so). The Twins were fifth on that list and to anyone with half a brain it is obvious that the only reason the Twins were put on there is there lack of an ace and immense minor league depth / young talent. I mean C'mon, who can see Terry Ryan even coming close to pulling this off. His biggest trade to date is for Shannon Stewart. If the Twins were to put a comparable offer to what the Marlins asked of the Dodgers, it would likely look like this: Byron Buxton (#1 Overall prospect, 1 above Seager)Jose Berrios (#20 Overall prospect, 16 below Urias)Eddie Rosario (Very different player than Joc Pederson, but comparable in value)2 mid level prospects. I wouldn't even think about offering that package for Fernandez. And if I wouldn't think about offering that, think about how Terry Ryan feels about it.

Pederson has a lot higher ceiling than Rosario. Their minor league number are not even close and Pederson hit 26 HRs last year. His average was 210 last year but his hit tool is much better than what he produced in 2015. Point being that the Twins would probably have to include another top prospect beyond what you have listed to equal the reported offer by the Dodgers. Perhaps Jay or Polanco. It appears the Marlins are just trying to see if someone will make this type of ridiculous offer. Terry Ryan or any other GM is going to look at 6 years of control on 4-5 of their best prospects vs 3 years of control for Fernandez and say absolutely no way. Fernandez is phenomenal but 22-24 years of service from very good players is much more valuable than 3 years of Fernandez. The Dodgers would be much better off to get all of those great prospects in place and then go sign Fernandez in three years.
lukeduke1980 Verified Member Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 Fernandez has gotten TJ surgery out of the way at least...Berrios has not...just saying we're not usually very lucky in that department
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 Guess they should have called AZ....... No point in not asking for the moon.....apparently some team will do it.
bluechipper Provisional Member Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 According to mlbtr, the Marlins are wanting all three of Urias, Seager, and Pederson from the Dodgers. I guess you have to ask for more than you could get, but even two of those guys seems unrealistic.

How anyone can think that Plouffe, Berrios and Kepler is remotely equivalent to the Dodgers package is beyond me
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 How anyone can think that Plouffe, Berrios and Kepler is remotely equivalent to the Dodgers package is beyond me that isn't the Dodgers package. That is what Miami is asking for. No way the Dodgers do that.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 How anyone can think that Plouffe, Berrios and Kepler is remotely equivalent to the Dodgers package is beyond meJust because the Marlins asked for those players doesn't mean that's the real price to acquire Fernandez. I would like to think the Dodgers heard that proposal, excused themselves from the room, and burst out laughing.
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 that isn't the Dodgers package. That is what Miami is asking for. No way the Dodgers do that. Right, the Dodgers (appear) to have a competent front office. AZ on the other hand.... I can't believe Tony LaRussa would let these kinds of moves happen under his nose.
